To think it's cruel to not tip deliveroo driver?

LemonyChicken · 07/12/2024 17:20

In this weather? 1. I am AMAZED the deliveroo driver was even working and 2. They deserve a tip for going out in this on their moped just because you couldn't be bothered to cook.

"just because you couldn't be bothered to cook"

Judgey and unnecessary. YABU.

Sorry this doesn't refer to anyone else just my husband

I do wonder about this reasoning, honestly. It's very aristocratic. Very American. Alms to the poor.

What's unreasonable is not paying people a fair wage for a fair day's work. That's what we should be bothered about.

AlbertCamusflage · 07/12/2024 17:22

Whaaat!? Crazy. If you think they are being exploited (by a business model that aggressively seeks to deny people their employment rights) then don't use them. Don't salve your conscience with a tip.

They chose to take the shift presumably.

I always tip them but it’s always like £2 which seems a bit pointless anyway. DH doesn’t so can’t say that the curry that’s on its way is complete with tip tbh!

PoissonOfTheChrist · 07/12/2024 17:24

No. They're out and delivering food because that is their job.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 07/12/2024 17:25

I've never used them but thought Deliveroo already charged a service fee and a delivery fee?

If they're supposed to deserve a tip for delivering in poor weather why not Amazon, etc, too? (For all I know folk may already tip these ...)

Hoppinggreen · 07/12/2024 17:26

DPD driver delivered some xmas presents today, he was soaked.
Didn't give him a tip

TeenagersAngst · 07/12/2024 17:26

I'm sick of the way tipping is become a cultural thing here like it is in the States. The employer should pay a living wage not expect customers to pay for the product and then subsidise the employees wages with a tip.

We're all idiots for accepting it and somehow feeling we're being altruistic. The employers are laughing all the way to the bank.

VegTrug · 07/12/2024 17:27

Are you joking?! Some of us can barely afford what we ordered but are disabled so are having to order groceries from Deliveroo as it’s not safe to go out! Have you seen the service charges Deliveroo charge on top of the inflated prices of each item?!
What costs £12 in McDonalds, costs £29.80 via Deliveroo!

Chypre · 07/12/2024 17:27

It probably is. But, when I was booking my morning local co-op run (eggs, milk - I am down with flu currently) the record for the driver was “Stephanie”, but the guy who gave me the bag clearly was not Stephanie, not even Stephan. Who gets that tip then? It’s not a secret that some people set up and sell accounts to people on student visas, who can’t officially work. I’ve also had postman visiting, should I tip him every time he brings me a letter in the rain?

Cruelty would be hitting a dog.

Not tipping a delivery driver when I've already paid premium for the delivery, plus service fees, premium item prices, plus any additional extras they can tack on, in a country in which we have both minimum & living wages is not cruelty.

Tipping to make up for minimum wages or because you disagree with company employment practices is a betrayal of the employment rights our ancestors fought & even died for.

unclebuck · 07/12/2024 17:28

What about paramedics out in this weather do they get tips? DPD?

LittleRedRidingHoody · 07/12/2024 17:29

I'm generally a pretty generous tipper, but never do so with Deliveroo/Just Eat etc. I wonder how much of it they actually see - definitely not 100%.

You mean something like

'wear waterproofs'

???

no, I object to tipping. They get paid to do their job. If they don't think it's enough, talk to the boss or get a different job.

I pay for the item & for its delivery, it's expensive enough.

Doggymummar · 07/12/2024 17:31

I assume the delivery charge and service charge cover it. We don't have cash in the house, so couldn't tip.

Why do they need 'support'?

OhshutupSimonyounobhead · 07/12/2024 17:33

I have worked 12 hours today as a community nurse - nobody tipped me the bastards.

Grmumpy · 07/12/2024 17:33

Calian I so agree with you. No tipping in Australia or Japan. People deserve to be paid fairly.

you can think I'm mean if you like, whatever, but no I don't tip. As per my post above. It's a job they get paid to do, why do we need to give them more money?

teatoast8 · 07/12/2024 17:34

Nope wouldn't tip

You do it through the app, the same way as you pay them.

Exactly.

it's a culture I don't wish to encourage here.
