To think it's cruel to not tip deliveroo driver?

LemonyChicken · 07/12/2024 17:20

In this weather? 1. I am AMAZED the deliveroo driver was even working and 2. They deserve a tip for going out in this on their moped just because you couldn't be bothered to cook.

It's awful that we have become a nation of people who want everything delivered today. Only housebound people need stuff delivered.
People who can go to the supermarket should do it's lazy expecting it delivered.

I'm generally a pretty generous tipper, but never do so with Deliveroo/Just Eat etc. I wonder how much of it they actually see - definitely not 100%.

I always give cash. They always look shocked so I assume most people don't tip.

SoYouThinkYouCanPrance · 07/12/2024 17:35

I tip for food app orders when I’m feeling like I can afford it, which is probably 40 per cent of the time. This thread is making me ponder why I do it, though. I think it’s primarily guilt-driven.

Deliveroo and Uber eats it’s a hundred percent, idk about just eat or how that works though as never rode for them.

SoYouThinkYouCanPrance · 07/12/2024 17:34

You do it through the app, the same way as you pay them.

Oh I didn't know, never used it. My OH is the takeaway king

another1bitestheduck · 07/12/2024 17:39

YABU for the click baity headline alone, to encourage people to comment and then pretend you "only" meant your DH (did you not eat any of the takeaway?)

But I agree with most others. Presumably delivery drivers are paid at least minimum wage. £11.44 isn't bad for a pretty easy job - they could deliver via car if they wanted, if they choose moped or bike to save petrol it's up to them. If deliveroo/uber eats can't get enough people to work as drivers then they will increase the price of goods (even more than the higher pricing, delivery charge, service charge, bag charge and everything else they add on) accordingly.

Lots of people have to do their job (including working outdoors) in all weathers, and don't get paid more if it's a rainy day.

I give my postie a tip at christmas

I might have given them a gift in the past, when I had A postie, now I have a different one & they come every now & then with a couple of letters. We certainly don't get a daily delivery. I don't ask for the handfuls of adverts & it fucks me off no end when they leave 3 sets of flyers.

Judgey and unnecessary. YABU.

Oh come on

DuplicateUserName · 07/12/2024 17:42

LemonyChicken · 07/12/2024 17:22

Sorry this doesn't refer to anyone else just my husband

Then why didn't you say it to your husband instead of Mumsnetters? 😳

Weird back-peddle.

Scissor · 07/12/2024 17:43

Having nearly been charged £11 for a £6 bottle of wine at a local garage last week because they'd forgotten to change the till from the deliveroo pricing ..
And having seen the shared delivery bag that moved around the kids I've known for rent..
It's a complete and utter disgusting system using no proper employment laws.
Do not use it. Do not tip.

Because that's what people do? Argue with their partners then go am I being unreasonable?

I did mean my husband and no I didn't have any or I wouldn't have said I had some..

I don't tip, though I don't have deliveroo locally, atleast not that I'm aware of!

But I do get Amazon deliveries almost daily so always have a can of coke + chocolate bar/bag of sweets ready to hand over. They look absolutely shattered and worn down by evening time so a little sugar helps them imo. Never had anyone turn it down, just lots of appreciation at the gesture.

If I had deliveroo, I probably would tip if I had change in the house, in bad weather. Purely to make the person's day abit better/lift morale for them. I always appreciated finding change/snack/drink had been left for me when I was in a long, exhausting, all weather job. Just kindness more than anything. That's not to say everyone should do it, I just enjoy doing it.

It's 'lazy' to

Use a dishwasher
Use a vacuum cleaner
Use an electric whisk
Use a car for short journeys
Use a washing machine
Use an electric lawnmower

The list is endless but here we all are in 2024, using appliances and delivery services that are available to us (and keep people in employment).

They’re not all paid minimum wage, a lot of the app based xompanies they’re classed as self employed so the company doesn’t have to contribute towards pensions, benefits etc and end up earning under minimum per hour

TheFunHare · 07/12/2024 17:48

I always tip because I feel it's insurance against getting my food spat on or something similar.

genesis92 · 07/12/2024 17:49

This won't go well for you OP.

Mumsnet is full of the type of people who think "well I don't get tipped for my job so why should I tip anyone else"

Yet they insist on giving teachers stupidly generous gift cards.

What!?!? Why don’t I know tipping delivery drivers is a thing now?

I feel really sorry for my local chaps who’ve never got a bean out of me.

It's not 'lazy' to get food delivered from the supermarket. It's a service I pay for. Don't you understand the concept??

I Don't 'expect' it to be delivered (because they're nice people), they're not someone doing me a favour, I pay for it to be delivered.

Half the time you go into shops now they say they don't have xx in stock so go online.

i have my reasons I pay for delivery (and they're none of your business). I'm paying for a service they offer.

You don't get to decide who is lazy & who is not. Stick your judgement in a pipe & smoke it.

betterangels · 07/12/2024 17:51

I just came back from London. I hate service charges with a passion.

So glad to be in a country where tipping is not a thing.

Except you didn't mention your partner at all until you were pulled up about accusing MNetters of not being bothered to cook.

Norder · 07/12/2024 17:53

Cruel?! Dial the drama down a little - no, it is neither cruel nor necessary when you've paid for a service. If you feel it is genuinely cruel, don't use that service.

My husband is lazy because he is perfectly able to walk to the takeaway down the road and get food if he really can't be bothered to cook. He is perfectly able to cook. He has said he can't be bothered. I agree there is a need for this service but my husband who can afford it should be tipping someone who has done all the shitty weather bit for him

I didn't no. That was a regrettable error the "you" was referring to was my husband.
