Got a Christmas break booked with my family starting tomorrow. Only one night. About a 2 hour drive away. Includes a trip to a kids Christmas fair, a pantomime, night in a hotel and a trip to a leisure centre the next day before heading home. All booked and non refundable at a cost of about £300. Dog booked in kennels. Annual leave taken.

However last night dd who is 2 came down with a temperature. She'd been fine all day but got very upset at bedtime and woke up a few times during the night feeling very hot. She's got a runny nose but no cough. Very drowsy and clearly not 100% today but she's eating and drinking and calpol seems to be keeping her calm. She's currently asleep on the sofa next to me and I'm really hoping that with a day of rest she will pick up for tomorrow.

But if not I really don't know what to do. I obviously won't take her if she's unwell but equally I don't want to lose £300 and let my other dc down. I'm thinking that even if she isn't quite back to normal, one of us could stay at the hotel with her while the other takes the other dc out. I just don't know what to do. This has been a long awaited break and it's typical that illness strikes the day before we're due to go! Wwyd?

See how she is, if she's okayish just do what you suggest and stay in the hotel. If she's really not well, one of you stays at home with her.

Very hard to determine at the moment. She's very lethargic and feels hot to touch but she's eating and drinking ok. She's just not running about playing like her usual self which makes me think she won't enjoy it if she doesn't improve.

Pushchair and wrapped up warm enough for her when she tires, everyone else just get on and enjoy

Thank you she is sleeping soundly now but it's been a really rough day. She's been on and off sleeping throughout the day. Very rosy cheeks and just so sad. Unsure if it's her molars coming in or if it's something viral. We will make a decision in the morning I guess.

This. She is still small enough to be portable.

Off colour is part of parcel of being /having a toddler... If you are certain she won't be too close to anyone and spreading germs calpol and carry on imo!!

I'd just dose her up with calpol and nurofen and keep alternating them and still go. Or pop to the walk in and get her checked out before you go as another option.

Amammai · 07/12/2024 21:23

I wouldn’t cancel. Calpol and take her along. Everyone has some sort of bug at this time of year. Obviously if she’s digressed then keep her at the hotel, but they perk up so quickly at that age. A good nights sleep and she might be fine tomorrow.

mrsklaus · 07/12/2024 22:03

Unfortunately don't have a walk in nearby. But maybe there'd be one where we are going. My instincts are saying either viral or teething in which case there's not a lot we can do anyway. I just don't want her to be miserable and suffering. She hasn't moved off the sofa today.

Where are you in the country and where are you heading? Only asking because loads of stuff round here has been cancelled due to the weather having caused power cuts and road closures (trees down and flooding) and we’re only in the yellow weather warning area!
