To think they are insane to travel in this?

Booked onto a bus trip to Birmingham a couple of months back. Travelling from South Wales. Trip was planned for today, guessed it would be cancelled due to the red/yellow weather warnings.

Apparently though, the trip is still going ahead 😬🤷‍♀️ Honestly can’t understand how the bus company are still gonna risk driving in these conditions. I’ve said I’m not taking the risk and decided not to go. Yes it’s annoying that I’ll lose my money but I’d rather have my life especially with three young children who need me.

Would you have still gone on the trip? Or am I right in thinking the bus company should have cancelled and refunded everyone or given the option to reschedule?

It isn't a typhoon. Life goes on.

Try telling that to the family who’s just lost a family member when a large tree fell on their car near us.

Mumofoneandone · 07/12/2024 10:47

If you paid by credit card, you maybe able to reclaim the cost. The company is being irresponsible and probably just hoping others cancel, so they don't have to do any refunds.

Do people think there's like some huge wall along the Wales England border or something?!

This made me laugh more than it should.

Post like this always brings out the loonies

I don't think insurance is invalidated. From the AA:

"Can I drive during a red weather warning?
Yes, you can drive during any weather warning, be it red, amber or yellow. But the aim is to make you aware of the risks and their likelihood so that you can plan ahead. Your insurance provider won't invalidate your policy just because you had to drive in heavy snow or strong winds. If your car is taxed, has a valid MOT and is insured, you're legal for being on the road".

But wouldn't an insurance company also seek to reduce the payout for any incident/damage by claiming contributory negligence on the part of the insured? They already do this anyway if they think your actions might have been part of the reason something happened or you did something that made the situation worse.

So if there's an official govt warning not to drive, but you do and there's an accident/vehicle damage during the trip, they might try to hold the insured people partly responsible for it. Or would they look to reduce compensation for passengers because they also should have known better than to travel when it's not absolutely necessary? Particularly in a bus which could be more vulnerable to the wind than a car. Insurance companies don't like paying out and driving during a red warning might give them an excuse.

https://www.theaa.com/car-insurance/advice/red-weather-warnings-and-driving

"contributory negligence" this is complete, made-up rubbish. Car insurance insures against accidents which are your fault. (Accidents which are someone else's fault will be claimed against that person's insurance.)

If insurance did not accept claims where the insured driver had done something reckless or negligent, it would be of little value.

@hugsandpugs I agree with you, that it wasn't wise to go. However, I think if it was me, I'd have waited until this morning to see if the bus company cancelled this morning.

If they had cancelled, you'd have got a refund, which you won't get since you cancelled. Do you know if they DID cancel this morning?

It was absolutely the right thing to not go though!

I paid the organiser by PayPal as I know her I done it as friends and family :( so she’s the one who’s actually paid everyone’s money to the bus company.

No they didn’t cancel I was hoping they would so we would get a refund but it’s still gone ahead! Why they didn’t cancel I don’t know…

I have no idea where this myth has come from but no, driving in a red warning does not invalidate your insurance.

What about people who have to get into work?! Do you think we'll all just have to drive around uninsured?

Does this myth (if it is not true) stem from the fact that travel insurance is invalidated if you travel somewhere that has a Govt advisory. I assumed that it would be the same for travel.

Thinking it through, third party would have to be in place, but I wonder if insurers would not try to wiggle out of a claim due to a tree falling on your car when it is being driven in a red warning.

It isn't a typhoon. Life goes on.

There's a red weather warning for strong winds in South Wales.
Red
Extreme weather is expected. Red means you should take action now to keep yourself and others safe from the impact of the weather. Widespread damage, travel and power disruption and risk to life is likely. You must avoid dangerous areas and follow the advice of the emergency services and local authorities.

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 07/12/2024 11:21

@hugsandpugs

I suspect that may be exactly the reason they didn't cancel:....

allthatfalafel · 07/12/2024 11:25

I think they should have cancelled but surely they have a basic clause about no refunds for cancellations due to things beyond their control - weather conditions, bridges being out, roadworks/closures etc.

unlikelychump · 07/12/2024 07:51

People aren't very familiar with geography are they? Going over the severn bridge to get to Birmingham from near Cardiff is the long way round....

@unlikelychump @Lisbeth50
The fastest route from Cardiff to Birmingham is by motorway using one of the bridges across the Bristol Channel. The alternative route is much slower winding road over hilly terrain. I'm not sure if it's even a dual carriageway until you get to the M5.

Finetoday · 07/12/2024 11:35

2 local coach tour companies in North Wales have cancelled everything today.
Shocking any in a red zone are going ahead 😵‍💫

QuizzicalPause · 07/12/2024 11:36

Donttellempike · 07/12/2024 08:55

Maybe the point being made is that the winds are bad enough that both bridges have been closed. So maybe better to avoid driving in the area as it is very very windy 🤷‍♀️

One bridge closes quite often when it's windy. The other one less so but it's still doesn't mean the roads that aren't a bridge are necessarily dangerous. They might be, but it's not linked to the bridges.

berksandbeyond · 07/12/2024 11:36

Was this a primark shopping trip? I can't believe people are willing to take the risk for that, ffs

Funnily enough that probably will be one of the places people will go to, even though we have one closer in Cardiff which is bigger than the one in Birmingham

🤣🤣🤣

From Cardiff to Birmingham you take the M4 to Newport, the A449 to Raglan, the A40 to Ross, the M50 to the M5...

All of the above are dual carriageways or motorways. I'm not sure wtf you're talking about!

Yes, sorry, my mistake. An old cart road. I think it's still cobbled in places. Fortunately there are many taverns along the way where your horse can get water and you can get some ale.
