To think they are insane to travel in this?

Booked onto a bus trip to Birmingham a couple of months back. Travelling from South Wales. Trip was planned for today, guessed it would be cancelled due to the red/yellow weather warnings.

Apparently though, the trip is still going ahead 😬🤷‍♀️ Honestly can’t understand how the bus company are still gonna risk driving in these conditions. I’ve said I’m not taking the risk and decided not to go. Yes it’s annoying that I’ll lose my money but I’d rather have my life especially with three young children who need me.

Would you have still gone on the trip? Or am I right in thinking the bus company should have cancelled and refunded everyone or given the option to reschedule?

How are they going to get out of Wales? The bridges are shut Confused

Wales is attached to England!

DeffoNeedANameChange · 07/12/2024 07:37

Ps I waited all day yesterday to see whether Sainsbury's would cancel my delivery. They hadn't by 9pm (I was hoping that if they were the ones to cancel, they'd also book me a replacement slot for Sunday, which has happened before - there weren't any regular slots available) so I cancelled it myself.

Annoying to be stuck in without much food, but I can't believe they're actually sending delivery drivers out in this.

coffeesaveslives · 07/12/2024 07:37

@ChristmasEveNotChristmasSteve yes, I know 🙄

But with the bridges closed and much of the country on a Red warning, how are they going to get anywhere?

MiddleClassWomanOfACertainAge · 07/12/2024 07:31

What can you get in Birmingham that you can't get in Cardiff anyway?

Maybe they go to Cardiff all the time and want to go to Birmingham for a change. Visit some tourist attractions like the National Trust Back to Backs or the Coffin Works. Birmingham Library is spectacular and well worth a visit.

Do you actually live in the area covered by the red warning OP? It looks like most of Wales is amber/yellow.

Which bridge would you cross to travel to Birmingham??? Wales is not an island.

Rubbish, insurance cover is not automatically cancelled when the wind blows above a certain speed. In any case, some companies self-insure, which I guess you don't know.

Fleet damage yes, but it would be fairly extraordinary to self insure against public liability.

TheaBrandt · 07/12/2024 07:24

Where are they going?! Lots of Welsh people come by coach to our city to see an attraction which is closed today due to weather.

The trip was named ‘Birmingham Xmas market’ so I assume for the market and general shopping. Though I’d have thought the market will be closed now anyway?

RedRiverShore5 · 07/12/2024 07:41

Have we got any proofs that insurance is invalidated in a red warning or is this just what people like to think

Well exactly, me and my sister were intending to go originally but have decided to stay put and go to Cardiff hopefully Monday instead

OP posts:
RedRiverShore5 · 07/12/2024 07:43

Well I probably wouldn't go as it would be a horrible day out anyway in the wind and rain

elb1504 · 07/12/2024 07:45

It's not a nice day here in Birmingham for walking around shopping etc.. but it will still be busy and people still have to get on with life but I can see why you wouldn't want to travel all the way up here.

coffeesaveslives · 07/12/2024 07:45

@Lisbeth50 yes, I'm well aware 🙄

Have you not seen the news? The Severn bridges are closed and there's a huge red warning for danger to life - so again, how are they planning to safely drive a coach to Birmingham in this?

Birmingham library is amazing 🤩 visited there about a month ago with a friend. Think the main reason was the Xmas markets tbh and yeah a change of scenery from Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 😂

We had one of those alarm storm alert things last night saying about a red warning, so I assume we are

It isn't a typhoon. Life goes on.

You’d drive a high sided coach load of passengers through a red zone weather warning? Darwin Award goes to…

I have seen the news. I was just wondering why a trip to Birmingham would necessitate travelling over a bridge.

Not necessarily, a lot in amber got it, I would probably look on the met office website warning map to see if you are in it, if you are it might be worth trying a refund maybe, but not if its amber.

unlikelychump · 07/12/2024 07:51

People aren't very familiar with geography are they? Going over the severn bridge to get to Birmingham from near Cardiff is the long way round....

Bjorkdidit · 07/12/2024 07:52

I think on balance I'd tend towards not going on this trip. If the focus of the trip is the Christmas market, will it be open anyway? A lot of have been cancelled this weekend due to the weather, even in the yellow warning zones.

Travel could be awful in stormy weather too - even if the vehicle you're travelling in isn't involved in an accident, there could be long queues on the motorway. We had bad weather here earlier this week and it took well over 2 hours to do about 50 miles, which was about double what it should take.

coffeesaveslives · 07/12/2024 07:52

@Lisbeth50 because going over the bridges is the main way to get in and out of Wales, and they're currently closed due to extreme weather?

Yes, there are other roads but they're hardly going to be safe to travel on are they? I didn't think that would need spelling out to so many people!

The point about the bridges is that the weather clearly isn't safe to travel in and yet they're doing it anyway!

coffeesaveslives · 07/12/2024 07:53

@QuizzicalPause yes, you're about the fifth person to try and tell me that Hmm

Safer than the bridges
