I thought boomers were up to 1964, BBC news had an article about "Alphas". In which boomers were designated as born between 1940 and 1960, so I am an "X" now. Given the resentments that exist towards "Boomers", maybe it is for the best.

@Ursulla Nope. We have xennials. Anyone who is born after Generation X and before the millennial generation would be considered a xennial.

This makes more sense for me. Brought up analogue adult digital. I am definitely one of those, I guess xenial (?). Goes to Google to confirm.

LilyBartsHatShop · 07/12/2024 01:18

"Classic boomer" I think refers to people who were born in the baby boom that followed WW2. That's where the name comes from. I'm not sure when the term was extended to refer to a whole extra decade-plus. But it used to just refer to those born in the post-war baby boom.

RockItLikeRocketFuel · 07/12/2024 01:06

Yes, where does this end? Niches between niches between niches between niches? Before you know it you're doing calculus on the generations 🙄

Ithink it's because a lot of people define the real difference between X and the millennials as being around the fact that Gen X wasn't digital, and millenials had the internet from childhood, which radically changed childhood.

The latest Gen X though did get internet when still young enough that it influenced their youth somewhat. So some want to call them Xenials.

It's to do with the length of the hump.

So the birth rate went up and stayed up for about 10 years post war.

LilyBartsHatShop · 07/12/2024 01:21

I technically fit in that Xennial category. I've always thought of myself as being between the generations. Which doesn't actually make sense now I think about it but I always liked the idea of being an in-betweener.

ETA Didn't know that about the length of the baby boom, and the role of the pill in ending it.

OonaStubbs · 07/12/2024 01:22

Gen X started when the pill was legalised which ended the baby boom.

I was born in the last fortnight of 1976, so I consider myself to be an Xennial.

I think in all honesty your still a gen x. But don't worry that is the best place to be. Xennial are (if a real thing!) a bit younger than you

raysan · 06/12/2024 23:54

Lets's find the oldest millenial!! 1 Jan 1980, anyone? One minute past midnight 😆
And the youngest Gen X, only a few minutes older

I think DS is one of the eldest Gen Z, without giving his Birthday away...

Caerulea · 07/12/2024 01:49

I think xennial is a good grouping, I'm '78 & had the Internet from mid teens, using it heavily for things like ICQ, IRC & online gaming. A mobile phone at 16. My experience growing up was definitely more millennial than gen x (who are arguably far fucking cooler!). So I'm just as familiar & at home with the Internet as my kids are.

OonaStubbs · 07/12/2024 01:52

Mobile phones were very rare in 1994. It wasn't until about 1997 that I remember "normal" people starting to get them.

"Xennials are a micro-generation of people born between 1977 and 1983. They are considered to be on the cusp of Generation X and Millennials"

I could just paste the AI after that but don't want to, but being born of that generation it rings true. We remember the single TV and phone box down the road, also remember more channels being "launched" and having the first phones etc.

I am going with go Xennial for now. (Not sure if will ever come up on convo but now I know how to make sense of it if it did.)

Yes they were, I had one cos I'd left home & had to walk in a dodgy area to get to the phone box (no phone where I was living) & parents thought it a good idea I had one...until the bills started coming 😬

ThisIsSockward · 07/12/2024 02:03

I was born in 1979, and the Xennial subgroup fits. Very much an analog childhood, though I remember using a computer from a fairly young age, at school and because my Dad used them for work. By my late teens, the Internet was gaining speed and becoming a bigger part of daily life. I actually met my husband online, back when it was still something of a novelty. (Married in 2001.)

I met my husband in 1995 on the Skinternet aka Teletext. 😅

SprostenGreen · 07/12/2024 02:42

Xennial but more GenX.

That's actually sooo cool. I love the fact you met on Teletext.

I am old enough to remember playing games on Teletext but no idea that you could meet a partner there. I was a kid and so it was news, bit of gossip and when my parents tried one day to book a holiday.

I am also old enough to have met my husband 15 years ago on an on line dating site in 2010, quite a few years after Teletext but it all started somewhere.

At best you are borderline, of a borderline, of a made up era 😁

I'm taking, brought up with analogue moving into digital as the Xennials defining factor. It rings a bit true. A bit like the fact the pill made the difference to the baby boomers gen as PP noted it seems to be the history changing events your are born into and I do think it covers a cusp. I don't feel the need to change my status on any of my SM as such though.

BeccaS34 · 07/12/2024 03:20

Boomer always struck me as an Americanism. The UK had a much less prosperous time right after the war and more clean up to do.

Sorry meant to sign off...yours, Xennial gen.

libertineagain · 07/12/2024 03:50

I'm both in late 1980 and don't buy into any of this xennial crap - I can't remember anyone I knew having a mobile phone until 1997 (which were little relation to today's phones) the Internet didn't really feature in my life until my late teens. I'm very happily gen z - definitely the cooler option. Until the dates shared here, I have neve been defined as a millennial.

Babbahabba · 07/12/2024 03:57

@Dahliasarebeautiful I'm mid 40s and feel too old for millennials but too young to be gen x.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 07/12/2024 03:58

I always thought I was Neanderthal?🤔

Colourblinds · 07/12/2024 04:08

There's actually a little niche in-between Generation X and Millienials between 1977-1983 called Xennials.

Im in this group and we are the coolest!

Colourblinds · 07/12/2024 04:20

Everyone I knew had that Nokia with the changing covers before 97.
