Women spending Christmas alone, what nice things do you have planned?

I’m spending Christmas by myself this year, and while I know it can feel daunting for some, I’m actually looking forward to it. I think it’s a great opportunity to treat yourself and enjoy some peace.

For anyone else spending the day solo, what are you planning? Whether it’s cooking your favourite meal, a cozy movie marathon, or something completely different, I’d love to hear (and steal some of) your ideas!

What's your aibu?

Mittens67 · 06/12/2024 16:11

Eating, eating and eating whilst watching Wallace and Gromit and then Gavin and Stacey. Might ponder smugly about all the people stuck with relatives they detest and/ or feral children.

Christmaseason · 06/12/2024 16:19

I’m not spending the day alone but have day dreamed many times about what I would do .

Firstly I’d open all the doors on a posh advent calender (bought around now when lots are reduced). Then I would cook myself a mini Xmas dinner which would also be the basis of a Boxing Day Meal.

I’d have a lovely bath with all the stuff that was in the advent calender. I would watch Christmas specials on TV and in the evening eat a cheese board consisting of crackers, yummy cheese, pickles, Pringles, olives and nuts washed down by a mini bottle of Prosecco. I like the ones in the little gift boxes that come with a few chocolates or a candle or ones with a shiny bottle in M&S.

I wouldn’t go on Social media.

TheChosenTwo · 06/12/2024 16:22

Not spending the day on my own but if I was I’d pack myself a little picnic and spend it on the beach, long walk across the seafront and maybe even a dip!
Obviously weather dependent, I wouldn’t do that if it were pissing it down…
I guess if the weather was bad I’d eat pre made party food and watch telly/read by the fire all day. And still go out for a walk even if it rained.

I used to put up my tree and decorations, clean the house and order loads of lovely food and wine.

On Christmas eve I used to watch a live reading of MR James short stories and horror films.

On Christmas day I had crumpets for breakfast and cooked a roast dinner. I watched a few favourite films and snacked.

sonjadog · 06/12/2024 16:25

I have just bought an air fryer and got some baking items along with it, so I am planning to explore the world of air-frying over my holiday.

Viewfrommyhouse · 06/12/2024 16:25

I'm not, but often fantasise about it.

The house would be cleaned from top to toe Xmas eve. Log burner set, ready for lighting on Xmas day, wood piled up inside. Everything shower, including washing and drying hair before bed.

Get up in the morning, sort my face out. Put on some nice new pyjamas and dressing gown - that will be my outfit for the day.

Bacon sandwiches for breakfast, accompanied by spicy bloody Mary's.

Lunch would be chicken liver pate on freshly baked sourdough baguettes. Maybe some cava to drink.

Dinner would be picky bits from M&S - meats, cheeses etc, with a nice bottle of Fleurie.

All interspersed with a selection from TV, Radio, Netflix etc and naps.

This sounds amazing 😍Can I join you?! 😂

Love how we all have our imaginary plans for being alone😂

Absolutely! Any requirements or allergies I need to know about? Sarnies will be ready for 10am 😁. I've spare rooms, bring some jammies and have a drink 🍸

NunyaBeeswax · 06/12/2024 16:44

For the first Christmas day for as long as I can remember, I've got it to myself.

Normally I try my best to make it festive and fun for the kid. (I am not easily given to being festive and fun so I find the whole thing exhausting tbh)

But kids not here this year. They're off to the ex for Xmas. I will miss them, but, I will not miss the Xmas dinner planning, buying and cooking.
I will not miss the getting up early. I will not miss the ripping through presents in minutes and feeling like
"Is that it? I spent all that time and money and it took you less time to open them that it does to watch an episode of Bluey..." 🤪

I think I'll have a festive sandwich instead of cooking... And nuts.. lots of nuts..
I don't know why Christmas is all about nuts, but it was the only time we saw nuts in the house when I were a kid. Me dad went doolally for walnuts, monkey nuts and those little brown hard as fuck nuts from December 15th till Xmas day.
Rest of the year? Absolutely nutless.

LatteLady · 06/12/2024 16:47

I am on my own this year, like most years, as a matterof preference. So here is what I do, I have a bath in the morning with a glass of Bucks Fizz and carols, then I breakfast on sausage rolls, coffee and satsumas. By this time I am listening to R4 and they will usually have "With Great Pleasure", then it is a few phone calls or text to friends and opening my presents from under the tree. More drink and snackage. Afternoon is music and books and getting whatever I am having for dinner started, then around 7:00 ish I might switch on the TV. Probably boring for many but I enjoy it and on a day like Christmas day, that is all that matters.

PyongyangKipperbang · 06/12/2024 16:56

I will cook some food the day before so all I have to do is nuke it and then spend the day growing my arse and getting covered in Dorito dust!

I dont have a TV so I will spend it listening to a new audiobook I am saving for the occasion.

User37482 · 06/12/2024 17:26

Proper soak, scrub, face mask, do my nails etc (I never ever have the time to do any of that) in the morning, put on something cozy (nice loungewear). Start with tea and a book. Something I can put straight in the oven for dinner, open a good bottle of wine with a very generous cheeseboard and settle in for the night. Fairy lights on, blanket and possibly hot water bottle. Bloody bliss. That would be my perfect xmas day by myself.

WearyAuldWumman · 06/12/2024 17:28

I've ordered a butterfly turkey for myself. For the first time since DH died 4 yrs ago, I'll attempt to make myself a proper Christmas meal and then binge Christmas movies.

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 06/12/2024 17:32

Wow some of you have really thought this through!

I will ve taking the dog for a walk, having a lovely bath and pamper, eating cheese and grapes, thinking about getting the ingredients to make espresso martinis, read, watch movies, cosy up in pjs. Yep definitely looking forward to it.

comingintomyown · 06/12/2024 17:34

Semi on my own….
Wake up and have coffee in bed crash about on iPad then have a nice shower and put on something nicer to wear than the last decade as I’ve lost a little weight
Late morning go and collect DS’s gorgeous GSD smother him with Christmas love and take him for a long walk
Go to XH for a slap up meal with our boys
Go home to my immaculate tidy house and slob out 😊
Try not to hate me I’ve been through a lot to arrive at a day like this 😂

MichaelAndEagle · 06/12/2024 17:37

They've put or are planning to put previous Xmas Eastenders episodes on i player, so I'll be watching them!
But pretty much as others have said, I'll be in nice new pjs, easy food, tv and book.
Stay off social media is crucial.

Scribl · 06/12/2024 17:44

I have a lot of experience of being alone on the big day. If the weather is awful, I start strong with a long bath and a cold can of ready made G&T (straw optional) accompanied by a whole box of Maltesers.

The rest of the day is very tough not to enjoy after that!

EmeraldRoulette · 06/12/2024 17:44

I will be alone for most of it

the day itself is the hardest. I will spend some of it with my elderly mother.

it's too riddled with unpleasantness to really bother with anything. I know I'll feel very low

last year I watched Saltburn in the evening which cheered me up hugely. Not sure if there is a great film coming out that I don't know about yet?

but generally it's a tough time. I didn't see anyone to socialise with for about five weeks last year. This year shouldn't be so bad but I tend to just think I've got to get through it.

I might organise whatever channel has the Eras tour if they still have it. I am dreading the end of the tour! I've got lots of clips bookmarked on YouTube that I can watch.

but actual Christmas Day, all the cheery looking houses, I find it hard.

sorry @MellowLemur that isn't what you wanted to hear. I try not to think about it but the bloody thing gets longer each year.

CocoapuffPuff · 06/12/2024 17:46

Not alone - me and 3 cats.
Breakfast of crumpets and marmite. Walk in what will probably be a gale, as it usually is. Shower, into comfy clothes, books, grazing on cheese and crackers whilst small roast beef dinner does its thing in the oven. Phone calls to family and friends, eat dinner, then curl up on sofa with cats, some gentle telly or a book.

Greyboard · 06/12/2024 17:49

I'm usually alone but I have never done anything special. I try to keep it quite spartan and just eat what I have in.

HerbertVonDoodlebug · 06/12/2024 18:09

Not spending it alone but I would:

  • get up in the morning, pick a flask with hot lunch and go for a loooooong walk in the countryside
  • go to evensong at local cathedral (am not religious but love the atmosphere)
  • go home and have a bath, get into pyjamas and spend the evening eating lovely food and watching tv
QueenBitch666 · 06/12/2024 22:39

Proud singleton here. Alone is bliss 😍
