https://www.itv.com/news/2024-12-05/man-42-dies-after-dog-attack-in-east-london

They don't seem to be saying yet what breed of dog it was, only that it was a 'fighting dog'

What's worse is that the owner was charged with it being dangerously out of control back in November too.

That poor man and his family.

This BBC article has more details:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c7ve32ejqp1o.amp

as does the Mirror:

www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/stratford-dog-attack-victim-named-34261693.amp

it’s a criminal case now so probably won’t hear much else until the trial starts.

I agree with other posters that deaths and serious injuries caused by dogs should be treated the same as other forms of negligent homicide such as death by dangerous driving (or intentional homicide where dogs have been set on the victim on purpose).

The victim was in her flat at 4.53am so he either lives there or was visiting her.

This suggests that the victim was the women's partner or at least that they had a very close relationship. I think we can conclude that he was fully aware that the creature had the potential to cause serious harm.

Please everyone, keep your pet dogs, cats and rabbits safe and secure as these people steal pets to train their horrific dogs. Try to keep cats confined to the garden with cat fencing if possible or build a secure catio.

This is the second time I've heard this. Terrifying. I can't do either of those things in present location 😭

Another one today

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c5y4vjl8yyzo

It's a huge increase over time if you look at the data.

And for those who say it's not the breed - again, the actual facts do not support this - it is clear that one group of breeds cause 90% of the deaths.

It’s terrifying.
These types of dogs need taking out of communities.
Vile dogs feckless owners.

Spondoolies · 09/12/2024 16:04

What is it going to take before some action is taken!

Easypeelersareterrible · 09/12/2024 16:09

It’s like letting people keep lions in their houses. The whole thing is crazy.

winter8090 · 09/12/2024 16:15

How many attacks does it take for people to stop owning these dangerous breeds.

There was also a lady killed in Aberdeen this weekend by a dog.

Turnippy · 09/12/2024 16:15

someone's dog was shot by the police recently around here (it had bit another dog and was out of control, they couldn't get it to open its jaws and off the other dog)

the entire of Nextdoor was full of people starting petitions to lobby the MP to have a go at the police for shooting their 'sweet family pet'. It was an XL bully type and the bloke whose dog it was posted loads of photos of the dog with his small children lying all over it, sticking their fingers in its mouth etc.

all I could think of was how lucky they were that the police shot it when they did before it killed one of his kids fgs! I genuinely don't understand what goes through the minds of these people - that dog was clearly dangerous and yet he was willing to risk it being around his toddlers.

Sadly these heavy types of 'Bull breed' are often owned by the terminally dim and stubborn - like the owners who have been killed by their own 'baby' - one woman was saying ''she doesn't give a fuck'' what others think, and posted videos of her dancing jerkily around holding the XL's Paws- it later killed her.

oakleaffy · 09/12/2024 16:22

And this- an XL tried to attack a small pet dog, and had bitten a woman.

We’re urging the victim of a reported dog attack to come forward and assist us with our investigation.
On Saturday 7 December at 1.10pm, armed officers attended Dunella Road in Sheffield following reports an XL Bully had bitten a woman.
Upon officers’ arrival, the dog ran towards officers and it was deemed necessary to destroy the dog at the scene.
As our investigation into how the dog became loose and its actions continue, we are keen to speak to a woman who we believe was fearful for her own dog’s safety and subjected to fear from the dog.
It is reported that the woman was holding her small dog above her head for its own safety, before a passer-by stopped to help, putting the woman and her dog into his car and driving them to safety.
We are keen to speak to the woman. Was it you? Do you know who it was?
Please get in touch online, via live chat or by calling 101 quoting incident number 446 of 7 December 2024.

@oakleaffy that's just dreadful!

Mrsbloggz · 09/12/2024 17:10

@Turnippy, it seems that the police have the right idea, dogs that attack are speedily euthanised.

You'll get people on here saying ' it's not the dog, it's the owner'. I would be willing to bet everything I own this won't be a golden retriever 😂

It takes a responsible person to realise that they are not up to the responsibility of owning a dog. Therein lies the problem. I think they should bring in expensive dog licences that require a time consuming training program to be completed. If people don’t have the money or the time for it, then they don’t have the money or the time for a dog.

I completely agree with this. So many people just can't be arsed to put in the time to train their dogs. Also, why would anyone actually choose to have an XL bully??

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fatal_dog_attacks_in_the_United_Kingdom

The numbers have significantly increased in the last few years.

9 deaths this year.

In terms of non fatal attacks:

Back in March 2023, using data collected from 37 of the 43 police forces in England and Wales, the BBC reported that dog attacks had risen by 34% over the preceding 5 years.

NHS statistics on people treated for dog bite injuries also show a significant increase over the last 20 years. In 2007-8, there were 4,699 recorded courses of treatment for dog bites or attacks. In 2022-23, this had risen to 9,336 courses of treatment.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/ced9w12dx8do - Dog bite to face in 2 year old that caused significant harm

Yet so many dog owners insist that no one should be afraid of dogs. Well, I am.

Thanks - those statistics are very worrying indeed.

Actually I agree. And always have. However the tsunami of dogshit that surrounds me suggests otherwise.

If you think it's bad on shoes, just imagine it on a wheelchair.
