https://www.itv.com/news/2024-12-05/man-42-dies-after-dog-attack-in-east-london

They don't seem to be saying yet what breed of dog it was, only that it was a 'fighting dog'

What's worse is that the owner was charged with it being dangerously out of control back in November too.

That poor man and his family.

This is never going to end because

Not enough people want it too. Isn't that how democracy works ?

ChaChaChooey · 06/12/2024 12:12

‘Fighting Dog’ is specifically the language used in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

It means the dog is one of 5 breeds/types:

https://www.cps.gov.uk/legal-guidance/dangerous-dog-offences#:~:text=1(2).-,Specified%20dogs,“the%202023%20Order”).

(Of which XL bully is the most common in the U.K. at present)

Poor chap. Definitely not BU OP, the dog should’ve been seized by cops after the prior incident.

@wheretoyougonow

No it is not always the owner (although it usually is and definitely sounds like the case this time) but who do you think bred dogs to be aggressive in the first place? Bred them so extensively to be aggressive it became a genetic trait. It wasn't fairies. It was humans.

allthatfalafel · 06/12/2024 12:21

SerendipityJane · 06/12/2024 10:18

Well some people in the UK keep powerful aggressive dogs for whatever reason, and some people think that's not a good thing. So we need to have a debate on it.

Since more people in the UK don't own dogs than do own dogs, maybe we need to start listening to the majority - radical idea I know. I wonder if it will catch on ?

What are you going to debate on? As soon as one breed is made illegal they just develop another one.

Prescottdanni123 · 06/12/2024 12:21

LlynTegid · 06/12/2024 10:20

Change the law so that the dog owner is treated as if the injury or death was personally inflicted by them. An extension of the legal concept of joint enterprise.

So in this case, manslaughter charges.

This.

Make buying and selling dogs online illegal as well and punish both the seller AND the buyer.

You'll get people on here saying ' it's not the dog, it's the owner'. I would be willing to bet everything I own this won't be a golden retriever 😂

I would agree with you, and of course the breed of dog does count. These dogs are naturally more aggressive but when combined with poor care and training, they are very dangerous. It is ultimately the human's responsibility, especially as the dog had attacked before. Staffies used to be the dog of choice for people who wanted to appear dangerous although staffies are not inherently aggressive, more they are fiercely loyal, more so than many other breeds, and so they would be protective of their humans and therefore come across as aggressive.

Prescottdanni123 · 06/12/2024 12:26

@SerendipityJane

Are you suggesting we get rid of all dogs? There are a good few fighting breeds where it is just a tiny percentage of individuals that are aggressive.

Elizo · 06/12/2024 12:28

This is horrific. Control your dog ffs!

It is also about weight, jaw size, bite pressure and propensity to hang on.

Those are all physical characteristics of breeds.

An aggressive schnauzer with a crap owner would never be able to do the damage that a bully or even Staffie (still a BULL terrier) could do.

They were, as a poster pointed out, bred to be aggressive, fearless, risk taking and "bonkers" enough to attack bulls, they were bred to go for the bull's sensitive and fatal areas (like it's neck) and to be extremely tenacious at hanging on.

It is the breed.

There will always be bad owners.

The breed they own, however, dictates the chances of survival/serious injuries.

StasisMom · 06/12/2024 12:51

Yes StrawberryDream24 absolutely I do agree. It's a difficult topic of course.

Mrsbloggz · 06/12/2024 13:14

What should happen is that anything that resembles a pitbull/xl bully/cane corso, basically any fighting breeds should be seized on sight and destroyed. Full stop. No fucking about. If it clearly is a bull breed or cross, seize it and destroy it
I agree with this completely, as well as the rest of your post@Potating

How is this an AIBU?

It's not. Just another example of dumping a news item in AIBU instead of in Chat or other suitable section.

Miley1967 · 06/12/2024 13:29

My ds was telling me about another terrible dog attack on a postwoman recently that some of his workmates witnessed. I haven't seen anything in the news but guess a lot don't get reported. It is truly terrifying.

This is appalling. I hope the dog is destroyed and the owner prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

TheDowagerCountessofPembroke · 06/12/2024 14:01

So a man who owned a ‘fighting dog’ has been killed by said fighting dog? 🤷‍♀️
This is a bit ‘leopards ate my face’ isn’t it.

I think the article says that a woman has been charged as the owner of the dog. It doesn't say who the man was 🤷‍♀️

Theoldcuriosityshop · 06/12/2024 14:14

On the news it said it was a Pitbull, unregistered and kept for fighting. Cooped up in a flat apparently, it was owned by a woman, she is out on bail at the moment.

Natty13 · 06/12/2024 17:06

There are (illegal) dog fighting rings in certain parts of London. Friends living near this incident were warned about thefts of dogs to be used as bait. That was my first thought on reading about this due to the terminology used by the police. If it's the case that the man was involved in that then good riddance to him.

How is this an AIBU?

Because there's no section called HTFITSH (how the fuck is this still happening).

Just ban the fucking things.

The victim was in her flat at 4.53am so he either lives there or was visiting her.

claratheskivvy · 06/12/2024 17:17

Please everyone, keep your pet dogs, cats and rabbits safe and secure as these people steal pets to train their horrific dogs. Try to keep cats confined to the garden with cat fencing if possible or build a secure catio.

LifeisNOTlikeemmerdalefarm · 06/12/2024 17:30

@Jewell25 he could have been breaking in.
It doesn't state the relationship between the man and the woman.
I'm not condoning the dogs behaviour but if was it a guard dog.

On another note why are dogs not registered. When we got our first dog
and had to pay for a licence.

MidnightMeltdown · 06/12/2024 17:36

It's not clear from the article whether he was a 'poor man' or not.

If he was somebody involved in dog fighting then he got what he deserved.

hagchic · 07/12/2024 13:26

If you kill someone whilst being dangerously out of control of a car it's your fault.

If you kill someone whilst being dangerously out of control of a dog, it should still be your fault.
