To wonder what you call " Black eye Friday"?

Posting here for traffic.

Inspired by another thread.

Many there wondering what " black eye Friday " is.

Here in the North East of England, it's the last working Friday before Christmas, everyone out on the pop including the once a year amatuer drinkers and the first timers cluttering the bar ordering their port and lemon.

Black eye Friday because so many people get in a right state and end up in a scuffle and getting a black eye.

Last year was very quiet. Only saw 2 fights.

Mad Friday here, NW England. Have heard of it as black eye too so wouldn't be confused

RubyRedBow · 06/12/2024 09:00

I wondered if you were from Newcastle when I read the title. I am too 😂

WingBingo · 06/12/2024 09:01

Mad Friday, I’m in the north.

when I lived down south (Devon) it was known as builders Friday.

ImWearingPantaloons · 06/12/2024 09:01

When I worked on hospitality we called it mad Friday.

My god it was hell

BlackeyedSusan · 06/12/2024 09:02

Blackeye Friday here is any Friday I get a lie in, and a day off responsibilities!

Never heard of it!

Edingril · 06/12/2024 09:04

I would presume the person needs more fibre is all I have

SausageRoll2020 · 06/12/2024 09:04

It was known as Mad Friday to Manchester hospitality but I don't think it's as much of a thing post-covid as people are wfh so not all heading to the bar as soon as work finishes on that Friday afternoon.

I hadn't heard the phrase black eye Friday before but understood what it was referring to as soon as I saw it in that other thread.

DarkAndTwisties · 06/12/2024 09:04

I live in Berkshire and have never heard a name for this day. Doesn't mean there isn't a name for it of course, just not one I've heard!

Stretchedresources · 06/12/2024 09:05

Never heard a word for it (until that thread). Hampshire.

modgepodge · 06/12/2024 09:05

I’ve never heard of a name for it!! South east, though I grew up in the south west. I’ve only ever worked in schools though, who would usually have broken up by then (not this year!) so maybe that’s why?

Tarkan · 06/12/2024 09:05

I'm in Scotland and only heard it being Mad Friday. DH has worked in transport for many years now so it's always the day he never wants to work. He would work Christmas Day before Mad Friday.

Indeed. Newcastle is quiet now compared to 20 years ago, but still manic.

First time I’d ever heard it was reading that thread!

Home Counties born and raised. I’ve lived in east anglia and the south west too and never heard it there.

TrippTover · 06/12/2024 09:09

Never heard of it, sounds bleak as fuck!

autumn1610 · 06/12/2024 09:10

I only heard of mad Friday when I moved to Sheffield from Worcestershire

Katyfour · 06/12/2024 09:10

It’s a strange concept. This year, Mon 23rd and Tues 24th are working days. So “black eye Friday” is 20th Dec?

Sounds to me like a really bad day to choose to go out anyway - too many people out, problems inevitable. Hence the quite sad name of black eye Friday.

I’ll be hoping to stay home.

Gizamaluke · 06/12/2024 09:10

I'm in Yorkshire and it's Builders' Friday here.

Deliaskis · 06/12/2024 09:11

Mad Friday here in the NW. I had never heard of Black Eye Friday until the post the other day but could easily guess what was meant. I'd only really say Mad Friday in the context of people going out that evening though, whereas the poster on the other thread was using Black Eye Friday in a work context which did sound odd to me (odd as in unfamiliar, not necessarily wrong!).

Thecatknowsshesboss · 06/12/2024 09:12

South Yorkshire it is referred as Mad Friday here - I hadn't heard that before I moved here from the South.

SharpOpalNewt · 06/12/2024 09:12

I'm from Manchester and have never heard of Black Eye or Mad Friday. And I worked in a pub when I was younger in the 1990s. Though usually on a Saturday night! Friday was my going out night and every single one was fairly mad.

kitchenplans · 06/12/2024 09:13

I live in the SE, and I'd call it " the Friday before Christmas", and it would be a totally normal day round here. Nothing different happens on that day to any other.

AMiddleClassWomanOfACertainAge · 06/12/2024 09:13

Black Friday here and I’m Midlands based now.

HowDoYouSpellThat · 06/12/2024 09:13

Never heard of it before either! Only ever lived in the South but definitely witness many Mad Friday's when I worked in bars. It'd usually be 'Full Moon Friday' though, as people would seem to be even more nuts when it was a full moon.

PandoraSox · 06/12/2024 09:14

I have never heard of this. Fascinating!
