Posting here for traffic.

Inspired by another thread.

Many there wondering what " black eye Friday " is.

Here in the North East of England, it's the last working Friday before Christmas, everyone out on the pop including the once a year amatuer drinkers and the first timers cluttering the bar ordering their port and lemon.

Black eye Friday because so many people get in a right state and end up in a scuffle and getting a black eye.

Last year was very quiet. Only saw 2 fights.

I’m from Newcastle and I’ve never heard of Black Eye Friday but then I’m not the sort of person who enjoys going to the Bigg Market for a fight.

SatinHeart · 06/12/2024 10:10

I grew up in SE England and now live in SW England. Until reading this thread I never knew that the last Friday before Christmas had a name at all!

ItGhoul · 06/12/2024 10:11

I don't really call it anything. I've heard it referred to as 'Mad Friday' in the media though.

HelpMeGetThrough · 06/12/2024 10:12

I've heard of black eye Friday, sounds like it's a good night to stay in.

From the SW (Cornwall) and never heard it called anything down here.

Lobstercrisps · 06/12/2024 10:13

Well despite working in pubs as a student in Manchester and Newcastle I've never heard of this!

The last Saturday before Xmas was mental though in the 90s at Woolworths where I also worked.

I worked in a bar in the Bigg market and never heard of it!

Loloj · 06/12/2024 10:18

North Yorkshire and have heard that phrase as you describe it - last Friday before Xmas, busy bars, pubs and clubs - lots of alcohol flowing resulting in more antisocial behaviour, fights and “black eyes”

Julesni77 · 06/12/2024 10:19

Working in hospitality in NI - just called black Friday - historically the busiest day/night of the year but there seems to have been a definite downturn in all expenses paid work do's - I think covid killed them!

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 06/12/2024 10:20

@Nolongera at 70 and I have never heard of this!!!!

Elmo230885 · 06/12/2024 10:21

South Yorkshire, I've only ever heard to it referred to as mad Friday. It was hell when I used to work behind a bar ( many moons ago! )

Dontcallmescarface · 06/12/2024 10:22

I'm in Somerset and I'm not aware of it being called anything other than "the last Friday before Christmas" here.

tilypu · 06/12/2024 10:23

Black Friday where I'm from in Scotland

Dollybantree · 06/12/2024 10:23

Hahaha I saw the thread where the OP mentioned black eye Friday - I thought she was referring to Black Friday and was very confused.

Black eye Friday makes sense now!

Bigearringsbigsmile · 06/12/2024 10:24

I've heard it from a family member from Cumbria

FestiveFruitloop · 06/12/2024 10:24

Aah thanks for explaining the origin, I was wondering about that!

WorriedRelative · 06/12/2024 10:25

Mad Friday or messy Friday here in the midlands

Dotjones · 06/12/2024 10:25

I first heard the term a couple of years ago, reminded me of this poster/t-shirt. I've never heard anyone use it in real life. Any Friday in December is "stay at home the pubs will be heaving with drunken idiots Friday" for me anyway.

I'm East Anglia and never heard it called any name.

harriettenightingale · 06/12/2024 10:28

Mad Friday for me, a southerner but lived in Yorkshire for years when I first started working so I may have picked it up there.

Bogdwellingwellywearer · 06/12/2024 10:30

I hate how it coincides with the end of term and older high school kids are often given a half day where they want to hang out and let their hair down. Lots of drunken teen girls mixed in the vicinity of big groups of drunken men , it always makes me edgy.

DarkAndTwisties · 06/12/2024 09:04

I live in Berkshire and have never heard a name for this day. Doesn't mean there isn't a name for it of course, just not one I've heard!

Ditto

rach333 · 06/12/2024 10:33

I’m in Newcastle, and I’ve definitely heard the term black eye Friday, and I’m not remotely a partier! Reading the responses it seems like it’s definitely more prominent in the north! I’m pretty sure I first heard the term from my Dad, as he used to go out regularly on a Friday night for a couple of drinks, but would never go on ‘black eye Friday’ as it was way too busy and not worth the potential aggro of running into a drunken reveller looking for a fight.

Carrotstick123 · 06/12/2024 10:36

Just black friday.. no eyes involved. Last Friday before Christmas we all went down the pub for a few drinks!

BestIsWest · 06/12/2024 10:37

Years ago here in Swansea we always called it Black Friday but now of course that means something else. I’m off down Wind street tonight as it happens.

Toottooot · 06/12/2024 10:38

Mad Friday or maybe not the most PC - Feel/Feil Friday.
