Posting here for traffic.

Inspired by another thread.

Many there wondering what " black eye Friday " is.

Here in the North East of England, it's the last working Friday before Christmas, everyone out on the pop including the once a year amatuer drinkers and the first timers cluttering the bar ordering their port and lemon.

Black eye Friday because so many people get in a right state and end up in a scuffle and getting a black eye.

Last year was very quiet. Only saw 2 fights.

I'm north West (Cumbria) and always called Black Eye Friday. DP was grumbling this morning about his works christmas do being on Black eye Friday so he's not going!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 06/12/2024 09:40

Also no name for it where I am, which is South London. Nothing special about that day here 😁

Barleycat · 06/12/2024 09:41

Never heard of it.

Ponoka7 · 06/12/2024 09:41

My DH was in a refrigeration, they had the usual Christmas/Jan shut down, so it was builders Friday and that was used later because we used to drink with a lot of builders. Otherwise we would have used Mad Friday. I never worked in jobs were it applied.

wholettheturnipsburn · 06/12/2024 09:43

We called it (still call it) Black Friday before the term was hijacked by the shops trying to be American

TheGoogleMum · 06/12/2024 09:44

I had never heard of this until I read that other thread, then Google tells me it's last Friday before Xmas. I'm from the midlands

Rowansiskin · 06/12/2024 09:44

Black Eye Friday here too (Devon). Emergency services family. Been out on Black Eye Friday once before, there was a palpable mood of aggression in the air so I went home early. One of my colleagues later on was beaten up walking home.

sharpclawedkitten · 06/12/2024 09:44

I'd never heard of it and I've lived in a few places across the UK.

noworklifebalance · 06/12/2024 09:45

Just Friday here (London) - similar to most other (not all) posters from the southern parts of England.

Not heard of this term from friends/family who work in hospitals but it’s been many years since they worked in A&E so that maybe a reason why.

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 06/12/2024 09:45

Heard of Black Eye Friday, but I've always been a bit of a po-faced arse about the whole thing, even as a teen. Christmas was for family for me, even when all my mates were out on the lash on Christmas Eve.

Boxing Day was another matter. Love a Boxing Day night out.

BloodyHellBob · 06/12/2024 09:45

I've heard it called Mad Friday here in NI. It's usually when places are heaving with office parties!

Itiswhatitis80 · 06/12/2024 09:45

It’s called mad Friday here in my neck of South Yorkshire.

Marmite27 · 06/12/2024 09:45

Mad Friday in West Yorkshire

TheCrenchinglyMcQuaffenBrothers · 06/12/2024 09:47

Interesting, also living in the SE of England and never heard of it. Though I guess it's possible those working in the emergency services/hospitals and even pubs and bars might have a name for it.

noworklifebalance · 06/12/2024 09:48

Boxing Day was/is termed granny dumping day by medics I know. Sad but true.

Lolypoly14 · 06/12/2024 09:51

I’m down on the south coast and I have heard of Black Eye Friday.

I don’t think it’s much of a thing here anymore. We’ve lost loads of pubs the last few years so whilst that Friday is always really busy in town, it’s not such a big night out anymore.

FatOaf · 06/12/2024 09:51

Never heard of a special name for the Friday before Christmas until I saw it here this week.

But I stay away from pubs as much as possible, and certainly wouldn't go near one any time close to Christmas.

RedPony1 · 06/12/2024 09:52

Never heard it ever have a name until that thread. I'm in the South West

Elphamouche · 06/12/2024 09:52

Southwest - Friday 😂

Ive worked in pubs, two of the emergency services and retail. Never heard it called anything.

Ger1atricMillennial · 06/12/2024 09:53

Grew up in Essex worked in London, never heard it called anything.

Christmas Eve however...absolutely.

brokenwand · 06/12/2024 09:56

i'm down south & have also never heard of it

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 06/12/2024 10:00

I'm London based. Whilst I am fully aware of the phenomenon of people who don't get out much going to office parties in December and being completely unable to handle their drink it's very much a month long situation here not confined to any particular day or date and I've never heard of a particular name for it.

nadine90 · 06/12/2024 10:04

Mad Friday in Manchester! This famous masterpiece is from a NYE but it captures the essence of Mad Friday here beautifully

PeanutsArentNuts · 06/12/2024 10:04

London and have had jobs in hospitality for years, never heard a name for it.

Namenotimportant85 · 06/12/2024 10:06

I’m in East Yorkshire, it’s known is mad Friday here. Never been out for it so couldn’t tell you if it’s mad or not 🤣
