For the wind to give me the fear?

DungareesAndTrombones · 05/12/2024 20:45

Just that really. Any time there's strong winds I get so, so anxious that the chimney might fall in or a tree might blow over on the house or just generally something bad might happen. Nothing wrong with the chimney as far as I'm aware and no trees near it either.

Anyone else? I'm checking the weather every 5 mins to see if the wind is going to fuck off overnight

No I don't particularly like it either, we have quite a few trees near our house. For the same reason I am not keen on thunderstorms either.

When I was a child next door had a plastic lean to conservatory thing and the wind used to make a horrible noise around it. I think that's why I dislike it.

stargazerlil · 05/12/2024 20:50

I hate storms, would like to hide away until they are over. I think it’s primal the fear.

Scutterbug · 05/12/2024 20:53

I’m the same. We have a big tree in the garden and I always think it will come down!

hazelnutvanillalatte · 05/12/2024 20:53

I love wind and storms. Makes me feel safe and cozy indoors

GrumpyOldCrone · 05/12/2024 20:53

My cats are terrified of the sound of high winds. I imagine there’s a good reason for that. YANBU.

EsmeSusanOgg · 05/12/2024 20:54

I am glad it is not just me. The wind gives me more fear than rain/ thunder storms etc. High winds seem to have more.option for danger (falling trees/ moving objects etc.). There is also something about the howl of strong winds that makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end.

It’s all fun and games until someone loses a roof Grin

orangetriangle · 05/12/2024 20:55

I'm the same but that's because I am old enough to remember the great storm of 19i7 where our chimney.fell partly through the roof in the middle of the night and our front window blew in remember walking down the stairs which were in the lounge to leaves swirling around the lounge it was like a bad dream we had to go into next door and my dad had to try to open our back gate by putting his full weight on it and still he struggled he was a big ma. his glasses were blown off his face ended up halfway down the garden so many trees were uprooted and whole brick walls were blown down. Ever since then wind makes me nervous

JC03745 · 05/12/2024 20:57

OP- have you been trapped in a tornado or had some natural disaster affect you in the past to cause this reaction?

It does cross my mind in extreme winds like tonight- what if the roof leaks, what if a window blew in etc. But then I think logically- well if the roof leaked, I'd get a bucket, if a window blew in I'd close off that room etc. Maybe consider some CBT if you feel the anxiety is taking over though.

verycloakanddaggers · 05/12/2024 20:57

Think it's natural to be unnerved by strong wind, it causes a lot of damage.

Pandasnacks · 05/12/2024 20:58

I'm the opposite I love it, love lying in bed listening to the storms! But I don't live in a flood zone and there are no trees close enough to hit the house etc. I feel for you though OP and others who feel anxious about it, hopefully it passes quickly for you

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 05/12/2024 20:58

Doesn't bother me at all tbh!

FoleyHuck · 05/12/2024 20:59

100% but only since our home was badly damaged in last year's storm Ciaran. 13 months on and we are about to move back in, right in the midst of another (albeit less severe) storm Confused

ColonelRhubarbBikini · 05/12/2024 21:00

It’s definitely a primal kind of fear. As far as fears go it’s a logical one as opposed to some people who are frightened of custard or cotton wool.

I am less afraid now we’ve got older teens and the big trampoline has been donated. I used to lie awake during storms praying to any god that would listen that it wouldn’t break loose of all its anchoring and crush a puppy or something horrifying.

mynameiscalypso · 05/12/2024 21:02

The wind makes me really angry. I have no idea why.

Nope and this has only really started over the last 12 months?

I can't stop catastrophising and I think tied into that is we don't really have any family who could help if the chimney did fall in. By help I mean like who we would go stay with....

It is making me feel sick! I keep hissing fuck offfffffffffffffff at it.

Its likely from the static electricity it causes. I recall my school teacher telling me the kids were all 'crazier' on windy days due to it.

Sorry but this made me laugh and is exactly the sort of shit I'll be worrying about at 3am!

Christmas eve 1997 around 8pm. A tornado touched down in our village. Our conservatory blew into the garden until it hit the trees, a huge branch went through our bathroom window. Numerous other damage including slates coming off the roof, one went through my car bonnet. Others in the village had their own tales of damage.

We live on the north west coast of North Wales so get a lot of storms. I know exactly where the torches, candles and oil lamps are

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 05/12/2024 21:09

Makes me edgy too, makes me worry about the roof tiles.

I'm so glad too i feel like a weirdo! It was so bad a while ago I had to wake H up and tell him to talk to me because I was convinced the roof would blow off. I am 48 years old 😂😂

@DungareesAndTrombones If it eases a worry at all our buildings insurers (Aviva) have covered our rent in temporary accommodation for 13 months, and all the repair works, which actually became a rebuild in the end, so far as the planning department were concerned.

Make sure you've got good buildings cover!

DungareesAndTrombones · 05/12/2024 21:10

@FoleyHuck I think we are with Aviva so I'm going to check that now.....

@JC03745 Oh wow, I'd never thought about that. How interesting!

tonsilly · 05/12/2024 21:14

I have woods at the bottom of my short garden, the tree noise is very loud tonight. It makes me very anxious.
