For the wind to give me the fear?

DungareesAndTrombones · 05/12/2024 20:45

Just that really. Any time there's strong winds I get so, so anxious that the chimney might fall in or a tree might blow over on the house or just generally something bad might happen. Nothing wrong with the chimney as far as I'm aware and no trees near it either.

Anyone else? I'm checking the weather every 5 mins to see if the wind is going to fuck off overnight

eat less beans and drink less carbonated drinks

I've always felt very uneasy during windy weather, but since Storm Doris early in 2017 I've become more anxious .During that one our greenhouse was decimated and the full trays of seedlings I'd recently planted were thrown all over the place. We decided not to erect a new greenhouse after that, and I'm glad as there have been so many storms of late that I'd be afraid of a repetition.
We are surrounded by very tall trees that the Council should really be taking more care of,and that makes me worry too.We and the neighbours have all asked them, but we haven't seen any tree maintenance activity at all this year.
It seems to be calming down a bit now,but I'll be out there at first light checking on my trellises 🙄
I remember well from my teaching days how the children behaved during windy weather. There were more fights and disagreements than normal and there was always a very unsettled feel about the classroom.Of course we kept them all in at breaks and lunchtimes during severe storms, but the slightest nudge up the Beaufort* Scale would set them off!

*I do remember a pupil once telling me that wind strength was measured using the 'Bee - Fart Scale'😄

is your dog called toto?
I hve issues-with noises-so wind triggers. i took dog out ten mins go n honestly it sounds worse from indoors than actual is outside. I think cos is blasting in icy long gusts as oppose to general stormy its unsettling-no sooner calm n it strikes gain.
Pleased to report all neighbours now in habit of secure gates at night. The intermitent clanging drove me to gaffer tape.full streets secured shut on a bad weekend-invluded my own n joined in whodunit chitchats....needs must
Thing is whether rational or totally delulu- fear pretty much feels zact same.hope you manage to settle and lang may yer lum reek.

Thank you and I LOVE that phrase how fitting!

I don't like the wind .

It's unpredictable and I can't to do anything to prevent it.

These days , there are too many weather warnings and it doesn't end up being bad . People because complacent to the weather too.

I honestly think that's a perfectly natural reaction tbh. Whilst I absolutely love wild weather (if I was in the States I'd definitely be a storm chaser!) I'm totally freaked out by sky noises that aren't weather related, so planes, helicopters.

A few years ago we had a jet create a sonic boom right over us & it was terrifying, a real primal fear. Had absolutely no idea what had happened, just this almighty bang that knocked things off walls. I was stood in the conservatory & it felt like every pane of glass was going to shatter. Never ever want to hear that again!

See this sounds absolutely ace, we had tornado jets go over a long time ago and I loved it. Bit of wind around my tall 124 year old house though? Nope.

The wind makes me really angry. I have no idea why.

Same here. I hate it. Rain I can cope with but I detest the wind.

The wind makes me really angry. I have no idea why.

This is me!

I used to love stormy weather, the excitement and the noise and the buffetting. Now I feel under attack and it makes me absolutely furious!

OP you are not alone, apparently on windy days suicides go up so it has a real effect on people. I never used to feel this personally but as Ive got older I feel like Ive got less ability to withstand all the noise and being blown around.

soupfiend · 06/12/2024 07:12

And in 87 a tree in our street fell over and crashed into the top of my dads car, crushed it!

I thought that was very exciting and now I would probably just cry.

Zippedydodah · 06/12/2024 07:17

I well remember 1987.
The wind makes me restless, but I’m not particularly worried about damage etc. I don’t like the sound of it howling through the woods behind us either.
I often wish I lived on the coast, I love watching stormy seas on television.

ConsternationStation · 06/12/2024 07:20

I'm the same. It puts me really on edge and I always worry that there's going to be some sort of catastrophic damage to our house and garden. I think it might stem from when there was a particularly strong winds and a tree fell on a classmate walking back to school at lunchtime.

Fireworknight · 06/12/2024 07:24

Snow and ice makes me nervous. If snow js forecast, I’m checking the weather apps frequently, to see when and how much would arrive, angled his warm. It would be afterwards , so I know how quickly it will melt away.

I do think it’s pretty when it first comes and don’t mind day one of snow when it’s fresh , but hate it when it turns to ice, and life becomes more dangerous.

I was stuck inside a building in 1987 in the hurricane. The porch outside fell and was flying up at the window so mum shouted at me to get under the table. We got out and ran to our car and drove him, we were terrified. Ever since I've been terrified of wind to the point of panic attacks. I hate how unpredictable it is and the noise sets me off.

OP I've learned to cope with CBT and breathing to calm myself. It does help

mamajong · 06/12/2024 07:32

I'm scared of the wind too!

So you're at least 110 presumably, but you WFH and have a 28 year old daughter? Remarkable!

Also you have openly said you're 55 in a couple of other posts but that's less fun

She wrote 19i7, not 1917. Clearly a typo for 1987...

WillowTit · 06/12/2024 07:33

i love the seaside in the wind but the drive home is frightening.
the storm in february 2022 i think it was i drove home and there were so much damage that had occurred while i was safe at work!

Urgh no absolutely not 😭 I'm right on the coast in Cornwall & we have lots of training flights going over us at various speeds & heights (some really really low!). Spent an entire day, once, with a couple of jets up really high (couldn't see them) just looping & looping over the land & the sea with their after-burners going on & off. The noise was crazy, I was a nervous wreck & so were the dogs lol.

Give me thunder & lightning, though, & I'm like a kid a Christmas hopping around in the conservatory

I'm the same but that's because I am old enough to remember the great storm of 19i7 where our chimney fell

I don’t mean to be rude, but you must be the oldest member on Mumsnet 😁.

TeachesOfPeaches · 06/12/2024 08:03

I always think I'm going to get hit by a roof tile or some rogue scaffolding

coffeesaveslives · 06/12/2024 08:05

It's not nice - our garage roof came off in the last storm and ended up in next doors' garden - the neighbours van got smashed from flying slate from someone else's roof too.

We're by the coast and in the amber warning zone tomorrow - luckily I'm away visiting my parents!

UnderTheStairs51 · 06/12/2024 08:29

The wind can be scary.

I feel more like this since storm arwen which was terrible in northern Scotland.

But to give you a bit of context, I live in a place which frequently features on the UK strongest gusts lists. We've had 80mph plus recorded several times in the last couple of years.

It hasn't resulted in a great deal of damage. Arwen and the one that followed were exceptional but everything else is the odd fence down or slipped tile. My house faces the north sea so it is brutal.

I find an audiobook or something else to listen to helpful when it is bad.

DungareesAndTrombones · 06/12/2024 13:05

Thank you @UnderTheStairs51 that is actually really helpful. I know I'm being ridiculous but I was in bed last night with my heart racing like mad. The forecast looks ok for tonight but tomorrow day and night looks dreadful. I might have a brandy before bed!

Stay safe please everyone 🙏
