For the wind to give me the fear?

DungareesAndTrombones · 05/12/2024 20:45

Just that really. Any time there's strong winds I get so, so anxious that the chimney might fall in or a tree might blow over on the house or just generally something bad might happen. Nothing wrong with the chimney as far as I'm aware and no trees near it either.

Anyone else? I'm checking the weather every 5 mins to see if the wind is going to fuck off overnight

I think, of all weather conditions, this is the one we can do least to protect ourselves from so understand why I get anxious about it. I certainly go around before a big storm and look at things that may blow over or away in the garden and put them in the garage. But laying awake thinking about what could happen - no, I generally try to avoid what if thinking because it never ends.

Noseylittlemoo · 05/12/2024 21:19

@JC03745 when we were kids our cat used to go berserk in windy weather and my mum used to say he's got the wind in his tail! My last cat was too lazy to do anything but the current one is also a lunatic at the slightest bit of wind!

Tess150 · 05/12/2024 21:27

Our roof did actually blow off in that infamous storm in the 80's. Storms absolutely terrify me.

OrangesCinammonIvy · 05/12/2024 21:30

I think it all depends.
If there is damage do you have money to fix it, hands and braun to fix it.
It makes me feel vulnerable, if I was handy or dh handy it wouldn't worry me so much.
Having money to throw at things helps.
I'm absolutely dreading it op and cancelling a night out, dh may go and I'll be incredibly worried about him.

daisyviolet · 05/12/2024 21:38

God yes I feel the exact same way! Strong winds have caused me terrible anxiety since I was a child. There's no cause for it, no obvious trigger. I just know that when the wind starts howling outside my stomach becomes knotted and I become completely tense, racing thoughts etc.

IsChristmasOverYetPlease · 05/12/2024 21:38

I’ve a huge great Ash tree at the end of my small garden. If it comes my way, I’m toast.

But there’s nothing I can do about it and it’s been there around 50 years so I just get cozy and enjoy the wild weather from underneath the duvet.

iridescentsnowflake · 05/12/2024 21:49

I worry about it too. It’s the stories of branches and roof tiles falling off and killing people, when they’re walking or in their cars.

And today in my area two roads were blocked due to fallen trees, which gets me thinking ‘what if…’.

I worry a little when I’m at home about the roof, but not as much as when out and about.

mdinbc · 05/12/2024 21:50

OP, If I were you I would make a list of all the things you need in an emergency, and learn where your water and gas shut offs are. If there are any large trees near your house, plan to get them checked for health by an arborist.
Make an emergency kit in a plastic tote and keep it somewhere easily accessible if needed, say the garage or outdoor shed. Being prepared for an emergency can ease the stress a bit.

I'm the opposite of you in that I really enjoy a good storm, it feels like it clears the air and blows all the worries away. Being indoors with the wind blowing makes me feel secure and cosy.

I'm so sorry you feel the same too it is just horrible!

I love dark and stormy weather.

@JC03745 it's the reverse of how being near moving water is calming as negative ions are produced in the moving waves and increase levels of serotonin and make us feel good. When we are exposed to positive ions it makes us irritable.

Lubilu02 · 05/12/2024 22:24

I'm like you and also dislike the wind, funnily I also remember as a young child being afraid of big trees blowing in the wind worried that they might fall near me.
I think I picked up on an elder relative fears who used to look after me when I was little. Apparently they used to turn all electrics off and hide under the stairs during a storm.
I also dislike thunder and lightning. I can enjoy it in the distance, but anywhere nearby and I'm covering my eyes and ears and checking lightning maps to see how close it is.
Part of my fear is the electricity going (i hate the dark) so I get the candles out incase it goes. I'm an absolute wuss compared to the rest of my family!

JC03745 · 05/12/2024 22:25

@HPandthelastwish Thank you for explaining it better than my teacher did.

justasking111 · 06/12/2024 01:11

My husband a sailor frets about his and other boats. Always checks the boat before and after storms.

BibbityBobbityToo · 06/12/2024 01:13

I hate wind and won't sleep tonight.

Thunder/Lightning doesn't bother me though.

123dogdog · 06/12/2024 02:01

I’m fine with the wind as long as I’m inside. When I’m outside and it’s windy, particularly when it’s dark, I get the absolutely ridiculous heebie jeebies that there are ‘things’ on the wind that are gonna get me. Which I realise is ridiculous but I think it’s a hang over from the psychosis I had for quite awhile. I have the same feeling about trees.

stormee · 06/12/2024 02:02

Wind can suddenly rip out a 100 year old tree... withstood many storms but one strong gust in one direction can cause a lot of damage.... you see trampolines flying around, if that happens you aren't totally safe inside that could smash into your window. But that probably will never happen, there's always risks in life if you catastrofize then you can't live

blueshoes · 06/12/2024 02:06

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 05/12/2024 20:58

Doesn't bother me at all tbh!

Same here.

You get proper wind in the US. This is nothing.

tolerable · 06/12/2024 02:22

is your dog called toto?
I hve issues-with noises-so wind triggers. i took dog out ten mins go n honestly it sounds worse from indoors than actual is outside. I think cos is blasting in icy long gusts as oppose to general stormy its unsettling-no sooner calm n it strikes gain.
Pleased to report all neighbours now in habit of secure gates at night. The intermitent clanging drove me to gaffer tape.full streets secured shut on a bad weekend-invluded my own n joined in whodunit chitchats....needs must
Thing is whether rational or totally delulu- fear pretty much feels zact same.hope you manage to settle and lang may yer lum reek.

BraveBlueDuck · 06/12/2024 02:27

I absolutely love the wind, the stronger the gusts, the more fun however I'm also terrified! Probably because my house is very old and bits fall off it even with a small breeze.

I'm at work tonight, again very old building, over 40 staff have bets going if the roof will collapse again. I'm hoping for a power cut, it always causes mayhem.

"lang may yer lum reek"

What?

Caerulea · 06/12/2024 02:58

I honestly think that's a perfectly natural reaction tbh. Whilst I absolutely love wild weather (if I was in the States I'd definitely be a storm chaser!) I'm totally freaked out by sky noises that aren't weather related, so planes, helicopters.

A few years ago we had a jet create a sonic boom right over us & it was terrifying, a real primal fear. Had absolutely no idea what had happened, just this almighty bang that knocked things off walls. I was stood in the conservatory & it felt like every pane of glass was going to shatter. Never ever want to hear that again!

"lang may yer lum reek"

What?

A quick Google will tell you it's a good wishes Scottish saying.

@123dogdog that's what was depicted in the old black and white cartoons, hands/ specters coming out of the end of the gusts.

tolerable · 06/12/2024 03:21

@BraveBlueDuck is old style scottish saying chimney=lum..reek= smoke come out it-is a plesantry spoze i thot fitting cos catastrophic chimney fear

I love wind and storms. Makes me feel safe and cozy indoors

Me too. It would have to be crazy strong to do any damage and it's not normally. You're totally safe.

LuckyBea · 06/12/2024 04:09

orangetriangle · 05/12/2024 20:55

I'm the same but that's because I am old enough to remember the great storm of 19i7 where our chimney.fell partly through the roof in the middle of the night and our front window blew in remember walking down the stairs which were in the lounge to leaves swirling around the lounge it was like a bad dream we had to go into next door and my dad had to try to open our back gate by putting his full weight on it and still he struggled he was a big ma. his glasses were blown off his face ended up halfway down the garden so many trees were uprooted and whole brick walls were blown down. Ever since then wind makes me nervous

So you're at least 110 presumably, but you WFH and have a 28 year old daughter? Remarkable!

Also you have openly said you're 55 in a couple of other posts but that's less fun
