Obviously what's happened in America with regard to Brian Thompson is awful but surely it was only a matter of time before someone revolted against their billionaire dollar profits and lack of payouts for individuals who've paid in for years.

I heard on the radio a Scottish lady's mother had paid out for AXA travel insurance (I think she said the top of the range cover) and sadly got hit by an SUV in USA. Mother was in an induced coma, AXA suddenly pipe up and say they refused to pay unless she were flown back to Scotland the next day! Dr called and said medically it was not advisable, they didn't care. It's not just US citizens that are affected. Horrible business model, proper ambulance chasing.

Dweetfidilove · 07/12/2024 16:02

You're not wrong, OP.
I'm really interested to hear the why. The US health care system is atrocious, but I'm half thinking it's something else 🤷🏾‍♀️

I am in the US. I ended up completely disabled because an insurance company refused to permit an MRI that would have diagnosed an issue that was treatable. It wasn't Unitedhealthcare. But I'm unphased by this happening. I'm surprised it hasn't happened sooner.

I'm really sorry to hear that.

I've done a quick google and as far as I can see the bankruptcies related to 'medical issues' in Canada seem to be primarily down to loss of income and work, rather than spending on medical care

@izimbra I'm in Florida for the winter and have many Canadian neighbors who do the same (spend under 6 mos in the US each year). I never realized that prescription drug prices were a huge issue in Canada; that surprised me. But the biggest complaint is lack of access to care. They'll save up and pay cash to see doctors and dentists in the States because they have no access to primary care in Canada. It seems to be another "postal code lottery" situation.

I'm interested in what countries have healthcare systems that function properly for the vast majority of the population. A balance of access, quality and cost. Unfortunately policy makers seem terrified to approach the issue head on, preferring to wait until the whole thing collapses before acknowledging that radical change is needed.

Is there no private healthcare in Canada?

Agree with pp in this post. Plus that grin emoji

Sorry what? He had it coming? How vile and disgusting.

It's a 'gritted teeth' emoji.

Is there no private healthcare in Canada?

It’s a mix, they have Medicare which provides necessary essential stuff….so guess similar to the nhs but most Canadians will also have private insurance to help pay for drugs (don’t think there’s a capped fee like in the U.K., so can be more expensive) and it also helps with glasses and dentists.

Edited

Yeah this CEO is no different from most CEO's around 1 in 5 are psychopaths!

Scary stuff!

Insurance will pay out the absolute bare minimum and if they can, nothing at all, whilst hiking premiums.

Look at car insurance here?

DucklingSwimmingInstructress · 07/12/2024 19:35

In all honesty there's a difference in human-value between car insurance and health insurance.

Cars are necessary for many people to carry out everyday life/work, but healthcare can mean the difference between life and death itself.

Edited: although health care companies don't give a shit about a more humane business model, agreed

BruFord · 07/12/2024 20:58

@CulturalNomad Sadly that doesn't surprise me. Who the heck would want to be a GP nowadays. My excellent PCP here in the US is older than me and I'm dreading the day when she retires.

SybilTheSpy · 07/12/2024 21:13

I feel like the general reaction to this incident has to be the most unified that average Americans have been in many years.

CulturalNomad · 07/12/2024 21:51

Late last night a reporter on CNN stated that law enforcement had the name of the shooter but were not ready to release it publicly. NYC Mayor Adams appears to be corroborating that story today.

I’m gutted at that actually. I hope he doesn’t receive a long sentence. Well I hope he doesn’t receive any sentence, but….

If he's tried and convicted he will indeed receive a long sentence. I know the internet has concocted a whole mythology surrounding this guy and his motive, but premeditated murder - which this clearly was - carries a long prison sentence.

Honeycrisp · 08/12/2024 08:48

Does New York have the same provision for perverse verdicts as we do, I wonder? I know it exists in the US too but not sure whether this would be a matter for state or federal law.

And America has a thing called jury nullification. If even one juror believes that the guy was technically guilty but justified they can vote not guilty. I don't think people from other countries understand that that there are very few people thinking that this guy was wrong. We are done and fed up. Conservative or liberal, a lot of us or are family members have been screwed over by insurance companies.

DanielaDressen · 08/12/2024 08:53

If he gets found not guilty it’ll be open season on senior insurance company execs

Good

I had a claim denied. 100000 dollar. They fucked up but I was on the line. Thankfully my hospital ended up covering it but the whole year experience messed me up pretty bad. I'm on anti- anxiety meds and have a few other additions issues due to the experience. I'm not "condoning" murder, but I understand.

This is what I was thinking- looks like we may have cross posted. We have it here too. If it's a jury trial, this has to surely be a risk given that there are obviously lots of Americans who feel as you do? I don't know if there'd be an attempt to sift them out first, but people can just lie.

Pompeyssy · 08/12/2024 09:16

He was comfortable with a gun for sure and looked very capable.

He's a rookie though, lowered his mask to flirt and exposed his face?
Left a water bottle behind?

Nope, a rookie.

But any court case would be like a John Greisham book, I wonder would the get 12 people to convict!

Good

You take away people health and lives, they have nothing to live for. Maybe these immoral people will think twice if they're realise there's potential armies of assassins who have lost everything, just so they can be multi millionaires. Maybe the system will start to change? Maybe at least they will think about rolling back the disgraceful use of AI in blanket claim rejections? The company this man presided over rejected around 35% of claims.
