To say that the TV Licence should be abolished?

When I look at what I watch on TV these days on the BBC, it's really only Strictly, repeats of TOTP and Glastonbury . There's nothing else that interests me. I listen to Trevor Nelson on R2, but that's it. I watch Netflix, Amazon much more and some shows on ITV, C4 or Sky Arts. And a lot of interviews on YouTube and podcasts. I also object to how the BBC posits itself as the voice of truth and neutrality, but it really isn't these days, on so many issues.

Why are we forced to pay for a service that has had its day and is no longer fit for service?

I love the BBC and it’s my main channel (s). I also use iPlayer a lot. I like the idea of a national TV channel 🤷🏼‍♀️ works for me.

Thevelvelletes · 04/12/2024 19:24

State rip off.
Time to bin it .

Scutterbug · 04/12/2024 19:24

Yes, it’s a really outdated system.

BraveBlueDuck · 04/12/2024 19:27

It should have been abolished years ago. I've told my partner repeatedly to stop paying it but he carries on to avoid any hassle. Infuriates me

EveryKneeShallBow · 04/12/2024 19:31

It’s very sad - I used to be a passionate supporter of the bbc. I defended their neutrality and integrity. But that was all in the distant past. Now they definitely are not fit for purpose and should have to compete on a level playing field with the other channels.

taxguru · 04/12/2024 19:33

We've decided not to renew next year when it expires. We started thinking about it and barely ever watch anything live and barely ever watch anything on BBC iPlayer. We could easily give up both and just watch streaming programs on all the other channels or stuff we've recorded from other channels - it's what we're usually watching anyway. We really wouldn't miss the VERY few occasions we watch anything live or produced by the BBC.

Annabella92 · 04/12/2024 19:34

There are so many excellent old programmes the BBC made that they don't make available. Kids in bedrooms on YouTube do though, for free.

This is me too sadly.

DirtyDensDog · 04/12/2024 19:36

The price is rising to £174.50 next year too.

Cryingatthegym · 04/12/2024 19:37

I don't pay it and haven't done for years. Don't miss it one bit.

keepingsanity · 04/12/2024 19:37

I suspect a subscription model will mean increased prices - consider what you pay for other subscriptions £25/50/100 per Month! The licence fee is very good value in comparison. Radio, TV, news, sport, language channels, world service and websites (revision sites /good food etc)

The licence fee goes to other channels like channel 4 not just the bbc

I see the absolute tripe that other counties USA produce on news channels etc and hope moving away from the licence fee doesn't mean a move to advert funded /politically biased programming.

LozzaChops101 · 04/12/2024 19:38

I hardly watch anything except BBC channels, and I listen to a lot of BBC radio, so I’m happy with paying the licence fee. I get far more value from that than Netflix etc. I know others feel very differently!

Precipice · 04/12/2024 19:40

I don't think the concept of a TV Licence is so bad, but as someone who doesn't watch any TV (I don't have a streaming subscription either) and doesn't watch iplayer, I do resent the letters that TV Licensing send me every so often.

Anotherparkingthread · 04/12/2024 19:42

Op just stop paying it. I haven't had a TV license in my adult life. If you don't see any point in it nobody is making you keep it.

Thatcastlethere · 04/12/2024 19:42

I like there being a channel I can pit on for the kids that has no awful adverts.
And Netflix kids programs are not good.
I'd pay it just for that tbh.
You have to pay for streaming anyway, unless you want constant adverts.
I don't want to be constantly hounded to buy shit when I'm trying to watch something.

thepariscrimefiles · 04/12/2024 19:43

Don't renew your TV licence then OP. You can't watch any live TV without one and you can't watch anything on iPlayer.

Thatcastlethere · 04/12/2024 19:43

Oh yeah and the news...
Have you ever watched American TV? It's a joke. Adverts every 10 seconds and frankly unhinged news programming

Me too. But their behaviour over some years has made me not want to fund them directly at all.

P00hsticks · 04/12/2024 19:44

I watch very little TV but happy to pay the licence for the Radio. I couldn't cope with it if the BBC radio stations had the sort of frequent mindless ads the commercial ones do.

ToThineOwnSelf · 04/12/2024 19:45

Off topic but I’m gutted the Rhythm Nation is soon to be more!

IMustDoMoreExercise · 04/12/2024 19:46

The only programmes I watch are Rip Off Britain and Click.

What had really annoyed me is that they are stopping making Click I assume due to lack of budget but they are starting a new radio station like Radio 2 which they have admitted will harm the commercial sector. How on earth are they going to afford that? It is totally unnecessary.

I really hate the decision making at the BBC. They are a bunch of absolute idiots.

Cryingatthegym · 04/12/2024 19:37

I'd like to stop. Do you just delete bbc/iplayer off your programmes/apps? I hardly watch bbc let alone any other terrestrial tv these days and frankly I've had enough of the bbc bullshit!

LividBauble · 04/12/2024 19:46

I don't pay it (or watch it, obvs) because I can't afford it.

On a couple of occasions, I've considered getting it for a particular show and the absolute obscenity of paying six months in advance means they want £30+ for the first however long. In essence, I'd be paying £150 for Gavin & Stacey. Fuck that right off.

They need to move with the times, get an easy in and out subscription model and more people would pay so they'd make more overall money. I can get Netflix for £6 or Apple for £8 or whatever, I'm not paying so much more for the BBC and its archaic system.

(disregarding paedos, neutrality, the shit they put on like The One Show etc.)

MissUltraViolet · 04/12/2024 19:47

Not paid it for years.

Needs to be made a subscription service, which they will fight every step of the way because they will lose a fuck ton of money.

But you don't technically pay the license for radio.

The system is riddled with idiosyncrasies.
