To say that the TV Licence should be abolished?

When I look at what I watch on TV these days on the BBC, it's really only Strictly, repeats of TOTP and Glastonbury . There's nothing else that interests me. I listen to Trevor Nelson on R2, but that's it. I watch Netflix, Amazon much more and some shows on ITV, C4 or Sky Arts. And a lot of interviews on YouTube and podcasts. I also object to how the BBC posits itself as the voice of truth and neutrality, but it really isn't these days, on so many issues.

Why are we forced to pay for a service that has had its day and is no longer fit for service?

I haven’t paid it for years, I don’t miss it but occasionally I get a bit pissed that id need it if I wanted to watch a live show on a foreign channel online, so nothing to do with the bbc in anyway, but with on demand it’s easy enough to just wait and watch.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 04/12/2024 19:48

I would pay the license fee for BBC radio alone tbh. There are things that I would change about the BBC but I wouldn't get rid of it.

SharpWriter · 04/12/2024 19:49

P00hsticks · 04/12/2024 19:44

I watch very little TV but happy to pay the licence for the Radio. I couldn't cope with it if the BBC radio stations had the sort of frequent mindless ads the commercial ones do.

You don't need a TV licence to listen to BBC radio (I've just checked this on the TV licensing website). You only need one to watch live TV or iplayer.

I didn't renew my TV licence this year as it was £168 - ridiculous as I hardly watch anything so it was very poor value for me. You can fill out a form on the TV licensing website and they shouldn't hassle you too much. The only time I've missed it was during the Presidential election but I listened to the radio and podcasts instead.

Ilovemyshed · 04/12/2024 19:50

So if you just stop paying but carry on watching, what happens?

YourRubyBeaker · 04/12/2024 19:52

You are not being unreasonable but the BBC should become either a subscription service or a commercial channel showing adverts.
It can’t run for free.

MereDintofPandiculation · 04/12/2024 19:52

You don't need a TV licence to listen to BBC radio (I've just checked this on the TV licensing website). You only need one to watch live TV or iplayer.

But BBC radio is funded from the licence fee, so if people don’t pay the licence fee radio suffers too

TinklySnail · 04/12/2024 19:54

Yes the licence should be scrapped. It’s absolutely ridiculous that we have to pay it or face imprisonment.
I will watch the BBC again when it’s advertising that’s paying it’s staff

EmmaEmEmz · 04/12/2024 19:56

Haven't paid it for years. Will never pay again when they consistently let perverts and paedophiles work for them. The programs are all crap repeats as well.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 04/12/2024 19:58

I agree. I'm not going to renew my license this year and I will have to jump through hoops to avoid watching channels that have no link at all to the BBC or any channel which receives funding from license fees. If they scrapped the license (which will die anyway as more and more people decide it is not good value for them) it would be much simpler.

Nothing.

Nobodies faces imprisonment.

Starlightstarbright4 · 04/12/2024 20:05

I pay but would love it to be abolished .

I don’t see them as neutral, at all , they absolutely should look at other ways of funding the bbc .

its crap . It’s not the bbc I regularly watch tend s to be ITV and channel 4 . So I don’t get why we pay

RosieLeaf · 04/12/2024 20:06

Just don’t pay it. I haven’t paid for years. When the annual report of overpaid salaries comes out, I sleep happy in the knowledge I haven’t contributed to any of it.

Startingagainandagain · 04/12/2024 20:06

I cancelled my licence years ago. Silly, outdated system.

PickledPony · 04/12/2024 20:06

Now that subscription services are plentiful and voluntary the BBC system is very outdated. It needs to go subscription only, I pay the licence fee and watch the odd drama or panel show but it is very poor value. My NOW TV entertainment package is 3.99 per month and the drama is far superior, Netflix is 4.99 a month and the kids watch it. They haven’t watched any BBC content in years. I resent lining the pockets of Huw Edwards, Gregg Wallace etc and getting mostly crap in return. I only listen to commercial radio (mostly LBC) these days too. The BBC once stood for impartiality and good quality entertainment, now it is often about scrapping the bottom of a barrel with the occasional gem.

IBlameTheDog · 04/12/2024 20:07

I've been thinking about cancelling mine and think I will next year.

I wouldn't mind if I thought it was worth it. But I really don't.

EasternStandard · 04/12/2024 20:09

We rely on the radio and enjoy that but barely watch anything other than sport like Wimbledon or if showing the Euros

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 04/12/2024 20:11

The BBC should’ve shut down once the Saville stuff came out and we were told it was an ‘open BBC secret’.

There’s been nothing worth watching since the late 90s.

Davros · 04/12/2024 20:14

Despite some of its shortcomings, I still think the BBC channels are the best and iPlayer is outstanding. I love BBC radio too and do know I don’t need a licence to listen. I’ve also been subscribing to Radio Times for years, it’s a great magazine, my favourite

TinklySnail · 04/12/2024 20:15

x2boys · 04/12/2024 20:02

Nobodies faces imprisonment.

No you’re correct in saying you can’t be sent to prison for not having g a license.
The courts can decide to send you to prison if you wilfully avoid paying for one.

BoobyDazzler · 04/12/2024 20:15

I wouldn’t pay it if my TV wasn’t in the front room with curtains we never close.

It’s just endless fucking repeats. The only thing that’s been worth watching in years has been Ghosts. They used to do great science and history programmes but if you look on iPlayer there’s nothing new and iPlayer it’s self pisses me off - decades and decades of TV yet they just leave the same stuff on there. And they’re obsessed with sport!

if I lived in a flat or my house was configured differently there’s not a cat in hells chance they’d get a penny out of me.

sanityisamyth · 04/12/2024 20:15

I love the BBC. I listen to R2 all day and pretty much everything I watch is on iPlayer. They produce a lot of excellent educational resources too - CBeebies/CBBC/Bitesize. I don't watch Netflix/disney plus or anything American as I don't like it. Quite happy to pay for my licence as it's much better value than all the other streaming services.

ZippyLimeSnake · 04/12/2024 20:20

I have never paid it & never will.

Turbo4 · 04/12/2024 20:21

Gave up my tv licence years ago as we don’t watch live tv and nothing on the bbc interests me. Haven’t missed it at all.

The BBC will have to remodel in the next few years as they do not appeal to the younger generation anymore who go for Netflix/disney/amazon prime now days. People buying a tv licence is falling year after year.

Tess150 · 04/12/2024 20:25

keepingsanity · 04/12/2024 19:37

I suspect a subscription model will mean increased prices - consider what you pay for other subscriptions £25/50/100 per Month! The licence fee is very good value in comparison. Radio, TV, news, sport, language channels, world service and websites (revision sites /good food etc)

The licence fee goes to other channels like channel 4 not just the bbc

I see the absolute tripe that other counties USA produce on news channels etc and hope moving away from the licence fee doesn't mean a move to advert funded /politically biased programming.

£100 a month? No way we pay £4.99 for Disney + and similar for Netflix.

Channel 4 doesn't receive any public funding, they make their money from advertising so that's completely wrong - google it.
