Amazon sent me a £300 product I didn't buy

I was on their chat the other day and the support person was pretty useless in answering my query about a product I bought and received 2 weeks ago. However, he seems to have been so bad that today I arrived home to another delivery of the product we'd been discussing. I did explicitly say in the chat I'd already received the product in question.

They haven't charged me for it and it's going to be a pain to explain because I have no order number for it. I'll get on chat tomorrow and tell them but just curious as to what you would do in the situation.

YABU = be honest and confess

I would tell them once in the way that’s most convenient to you. I wouldn’t be prepared to take the parcel anywhere but they could arrange collection.
If other posters (not OP) don’t agree with Amazon they shouldn’t order from them (personally I don’t). If you order from them anyway, it doesn’t make dishonest behaviour less dishonest because you personally don’t like their business model.

I'd probably mention it on the chat out of fear they'll charge me for it at some point. If they say return it then make sure they take it back at their expense. Hopefully they'll say keep it and you can either retain it or sell it, whichever you prefer.

No its unsolicited goods if you have not requested it and informed them of the error.

Amazon customer service used to be pretty slick and always have the last resort of an actual phone number to speak to a human. These days its gone down the pan and returning/raising issues can be a nightmare with them.

Amazon don't pay me to sit for prolonged periods trying to navigate their systems and convince a bot that I've received goods I didn't want. That's an Amazon customer service problem to sort out, not one for their customers to solve. If they want their unsolicited goods back they should make it easier to return them.

Don’t give it another moments thought!
a clothing retailer recently sent my Husband a £200 jacket instead of a £30 pair of shorts from the sale.
needless to say, we haven’t said a word and kept the jacket. It’s lovely!!
it doesn’t happen often, so a pleasant suprise I’d it does.
These big companies make millions and millions. £300 is a tiny drop in the ocean for them.

Check if they have set up a return.

They do send replacements out and you will be charged if this is the case. They give you 28 days to return.

This happened to me and I was worried it was a scam - look it up, very common. I removed my payment card from amazon and changed my password just as a precaution. I reported it to amazon and they did say to keep the item!

I'm very much afraid PP is partially correct. Not all returns, but a lot do end up in landfill.

If you haven't, watch the "Buy now" documentary on Netflix. Not exclusively Amazon's behaviour but many, many multinational companies dispose of vast quantities of returned stock. It's apparently cheaper (no, I don't get it either) .

Is it though? OP didn't take it. They sent it to her, unasked. I imagine if they come back for it, she'll give it to them.

She hasn't stolen anything, she's been sent a free gift.

But do OP make sure they haven't email you return documents, as they will charge you for the replacement if they have.

I'd disagree about their customer relations policy though
I've been a Prime customer for years and over the last few years the service has become really bad. Ordering items for next day delivery and them not arriving for days. Contact them on Chat and they basically say tough shit
I'd love to cancel but it is so convenient when it does work as it should

I always let them know. I might not if it was something very small and cheap but otherwise I would. I don't consider keeping the item for myself at all. I guess people have different morals. I'm not religious and I don't believe in karma, I just wouldn't consider keeping something that I hadn't paid for.
I was asked to return the gaming system but quite often I get told to keep the items.

I don't like the idea of being a cheap, grabby and greedy person. and that is how I see people who keep stuff that isn't theirs.

I think society would work a lot better if people were honest. I think most people are.

I’m fascinated by all the people saying they’ve been told to keep things. I order regularly from Amazon and occasionally need to return something. I’ve never once been told to keep it, from big expensive things right down to little craft items worth a couple of quid. What am I doing wrong? 😃

I'm confused. Everyone's saying to steal the item and not return it but on the supermarket post about accidentally not scanning a cheap item and not going back everyone said that was atrocious and stealing is wrong? So funny 😂

Same. Or if they want it returned they have to arrange it with the least inconvenience to me. I'd be saying it has to be collected as you are unable to go to a drop off point.

It's their mistake, so you should not be inconvenienced by it.

We had a delivery to our house for the previous owners 6 years after they moved out

We had no forwarding address and it was just left on our doorstep. I contacted Amazon and they looked it up based on information on the label, then told me to keep it.

I excitedly opened it hoping for something interesting but found the most hideous woolly beanie hat I've ever seen! I was so disappointed!

Society would work a lot better if mega corps like Amazon didn't exist - creating billionaires hoarding all the wealth whilst avoiding paying any taxes on their obscene profits.

A regular person keeping £300 worth of goods they've been given will almost certainly sell it and spend the money - putting into the economy more than they would have otherwise.

If it was a local/independent business or something like that then it's objectively different

Not quite the same but I got told to keep a £45 item last week. I was trying to return it but having problems getting the return QR code to work at our local Evri shop, I tried renewing the code and trying again a day later but it still wouldn't work. The Evri guy suggested I live chat Amazon and after unsuccessfully trying a few different things they apologised for the inconvienience and said I should keep the item.

It works both ways for me though as yesterday I contacted live chat to tell them a parcel that I had reported missing had turned up and for them to cancel the refund that they were giving me. A neighbour had taken in my parcel and forgotten about it.

Amazon live chat is really good. I'm not buying all these people saying they find it difficult to contact Amazon. It couldn't be easier.

I would tell them what had happened and leave it to them to handle the return. They sent me a duplicate delivery of an inexpensive item a few months ago (less than £10). I tried to get them to take it back, tried to talk to someone about it but wasn't able to get through to anyone to get them to do so. I then kept it.

Keep it untouched for a few months in case they notice their error. Then use it or sell on as you see fit. They make tens of billions in profit so it will not affect their balance sheet.
