Anyone else feeling totally ripped off by a Black Friday 'bargain'?

I probably am being U because if I'd read the small print this might never have happened. I splashed out on buying a suede jacket for my DS as his only present. It cost well over £100 but was reduced by £18 for B F. It arrived today. I was horrified to find a plastic bag, 12" x14" on my doorstep and the jacket stuffed inside. The suede is stiff and smelly and the jacket isn't the shape it appeared on the website. It came from Pakistan, though that isn't a problem, but it was unexpected as no mention of it was made in their website which says it's a UK family firm. Anyway, I've opened a dispute on PayPal but the company said they won't refund because it was 'in the sale' and offered me £20 as a goodwill gesture. I'm pretty hard up this year and this has sickened me. I feel so foolish.

Any online purchases are covered under distance selling regulations which gives you 14 days to change your mind and you are entitled to return it.

What @Shezlong said.

Pliudev · 03/12/2024 18:41

Really even if it was in a 'sale' ? You are giving me hope!

I was keeping an eye on a piece of tech ds wanted on Amazon.
It was listed for around £150.

About a week before Black Friday it went up to £215.
On Black Friday it was listed as 30% off: £150 reduced from £215

Wonder how many people thought they'd got a bargain.

Dotto · 03/12/2024 18:56

They're bullshitting you. Open a PayPal dispute and you'll get your money back.

IAmInTheBath · 03/12/2024 19:05

I find the entire weekend very stressful, constant emails from everyone I've ever bought from, two per day each. It's stressful and I unsubscribe but more pop up.

Mill3nnial · 03/12/2024 19:08

If you've opened a dispute on PayPal you should be able to get a refund

Yes, distance selling regulations in UK. Take a look on "moneysavingexpert" on your statutory rights.

Cyclistmumgrandma · 03/12/2024 19:12

Forgot to say, you need to get on with it as you have 14 days to notify them that you intend to return, then another 14 days to return it.

Ireolu · 03/12/2024 19:17

I'm happy with my black Friday purchase. Significant reduction on a rug I had been eyeing for 2 yrs. You shd be able to return/get money back with PayPal.

Pliudev · 03/12/2024 19:21

I already told them and that was when they said I wouldn't get a refund. But I've just e mailed them and quoted Mumsnet so they should be quaking in their boots! Thanks to everyone for their advice. I've been trying to convince myself it doesn't really matter in the scale of things, as it's only money but we all know that's not true, especially at this time of year.

why are you quoting mumsnet instead of the citizens advice bureau or UK government websites 😂

wonderingwhatlifemeans · 03/12/2024 19:35

If it is through PayPal open a dispute for not as described. In the complaint section there should be a place for a photograph so screen shot their email and put it there. In the section where you type what has happened make sure you mentioned that they have tried to act outside of PayPal and you have no confidence that they are a reputable company who will act according to trading laws. In my experience PayPal are pretty good.

OpalSpirit · 03/12/2024 19:35

I work in online distance selling. They are incorrect, they have to accept return and issue a refund.
Only time we don’t do this is if it is a sample sale and it is plastered everywhere returns not accepted, wonder if that’s totally legal actually.

Just open a dispute with PayPal or alternatively do a chargeback if you paid by credit card.
Both these actions mean they have to gather evidence and submit an explanation as to why they won’t refund. Generally more trouble than it’s worth for them.

wonderingwhatlifemeans · 03/12/2024 19:36

Oh also put a screen shot of what the item looked like on the website and a photo of what you received.

When I had ds I would start looking in sept for toys for his winter birthday, and he seemed to have a lot of friends with birthdays sept / oct / nov / December

On Amazon I watched prices dropping in September only to really hike before Black Friday. And then drop. As a pp says, often still higher than the sept price.

I remember getting some gifts in sept for birthday parties that I couldn't justify price wise by November. So started buying few of a good birthday party gift in sept for any party coming up that term.

LlynTegid · 03/12/2024 19:46

I'm sorry you did not see all the warnings from Which and others about so-called bargains.

I do hope you get your money back though.

RedRiverShore5 · 03/12/2024 19:53

I leave stuff in my Amazon bag for months so I know the ups and downs and when to buy, most of the stuff I bought were household things that I know if it's a good price or not.

Livelaughlurgy · 03/12/2024 19:57

I agree with everyone else, I've had my Black Friday list for a few months so I've a really good idea what something is worth and what I'll pay for it. If you just start picking up bargains on Black Friday it's too late to know if you've gotten a bargain or not.

OpalSpirit · 03/12/2024 20:02

Oh also if they are Uk based write a very loud review on trust pilot stating they refuse to give refunds and send it to them.
That is what really gets us to solve problems even if the company is not at fault.

LigamentBandy · 03/12/2024 20:09

A quick Google of distance selling rules @Pliudev will tell you everything you need to know. I'm sure you will get sorted .
But always remember if it looks to good to be true it is.

DelicateSoundOfEchos · 03/12/2024 20:10

Nah. I only buy things I was going to buy anyway. Black friday is really good for restaurant vouchers though.

RedRiverShore5 · 03/12/2024 20:12

Maybe stick to trusted retailers when buying online and learn a bit about consumer law then maybe you won't get so ripped off next time

Edingril · 03/12/2024 20:13

Well if people actually thought more and didn't just go 'black Friday sale i have to rush and buy stuff' then they may not feel ripped off?

Raera · 03/12/2024 20:13

Really good experience with Landsend.
I ordered a reduced man's jumper and it apparently got lost.
Customer service very apologetic and as the colour I wanted is now out of stock, they sent a different colour I requested and as the price has gone down since I ordered, they are refunding the difference and the postage cost, sending on express delivery and with free gift wrapping.
Well done!
