Anyone else feeling totally ripped off by a Black Friday 'bargain'?

I probably am being U because if I'd read the small print this might never have happened. I splashed out on buying a suede jacket for my DS as his only present. It cost well over £100 but was reduced by £18 for B F. It arrived today. I was horrified to find a plastic bag, 12" x14" on my doorstep and the jacket stuffed inside. The suede is stiff and smelly and the jacket isn't the shape it appeared on the website. It came from Pakistan, though that isn't a problem, but it was unexpected as no mention of it was made in their website which says it's a UK family firm. Anyway, I've opened a dispute on PayPal but the company said they won't refund because it was 'in the sale' and offered me £20 as a goodwill gesture. I'm pretty hard up this year and this has sickened me. I feel so foolish.

I was keeping an eye on a piece of tech ds wanted on Amazon.
It was listed for around £150.

About a week before Black Friday it went up to £215.
On Black Friday it was listed as 30% off: £150 reduced from £215

Wonder how many people thought they'd got a bargain.

This is SO common. I don't even bother with Black Friday. It might be worth it if you have a few items you've been tracking the price of & know it's a good deal, but not for impulse buys.

@Pliudev

you should be able to find an answer to that by googling pretty easily. There's a lot of info online. If you can't let us know & I'll help you find it. I can't remember what they say, but I think it still applies, but not totally sure.

im 'still awake' rather than just woken up, so not at my best.

As a PP mentioned. A lot of places bang their prices up and then when BF comes along, reduce the price to what it originally was.

This happened on one of the things I've bought for my OH, price went up 30 quid and then on BF back to the original price. I've not lost out, as I was prepared to pay the original price, but I'm certainly not running away with the idea I've saved 30 quid either.

You can tell with Amazon though if it's been put up beforehand by looking on Camelcamelcamel as recommended above, though I must admit I went on there about a month or two ago on the last Prime day and the website seemed to have changed a bit, probably 'improvements' and there wasn't so much data, maybe it's better now.

Prime day and BF on Amazon is usually a good time to stock up on branded dishwasher tablets and other cleaning/household consumables and a big box of Lindt Lindor.

UK based, online only firm selling cheap imports is most likely a dropship business. If it was advertised on FB or Instagram even more likely.

I would be so wary of things which don't have a solid reputation - there is so much imported crap around now. As said, it's not about where it's made but it's about how it's exported.

Was it real suede? You might want to let HMRC know too because imports of animal skins and products are meant to be strictly controlled but dropship type businesses avoid these rules by posting directly to the customer.

Thanks for this. I e mailed them quoting the distance selling regs but they are still refusing to refund saying the item was 'custom made' now as well as 'on sale'. I just ordered from the regular sizes listed on the website, nothing special. I imagine this is how the business runs and doubt it's the first complaint they've had. I'm really hoping PayPal can sort it out.

Name and shame the company

Grmumpy · 04/12/2024 09:35

do You fund your PayPal with a debit or credit card. If so as an extra guarantee of getting your money back I would contact the bank.Especially mention it was not custom made. If something is made to customers specified dimensions e.g. cut to a certain shape or size, I think it would be exempt but you should definitely be due a refund.

I got a jacket that I was planning on buying anyway so pretty chuffed

Notaflippinclue · 04/12/2024 11:14

Get down to your high street and touch it and smell it and so he can try it on!

this is NOT always the case. S75 (and same with dd chargeback) apply primarily if you pay DIRECTLY with the card. If you pay via paypal you can't always claim S75 as well, as you didn't technically pay for the item with your credit card - you paid for the item with paypal. If you funded that paypal payment with your card you might still be able to claim S75, but it complicates it, if you had a paypal balance and the money came from there you definitely can't.

You need to consider each time whether paypal or your credit card offer better protection and pay accordingly. e.g. if the item is under £100 paypal might be better, if it is over £100 better to pay directly with a credit card

Yup I bought my sister a jewellery box and make up bag from Estella Bartlett on Monday 25% apparently last day of sale, the next day they emailed me saying 25% off was still on and if I spent over £40 I’d get a free mini jewelery box - worth £23 (I had spent over £40)
makes me a) think their products now can’t be worth the price tag b) annoyed as that could have been another gift for a friend

delivery said 3-5 days - great as I need for Monday. Update today is it will be posted soon 😩

I know! But one told me it didn’t apply to online sales and the other said it only applied to outside company price matching. I tell you, I am earning that £10 the hard way by reinforcing John Lewis staff customer service training!

Update! I have got my refund. I will try not to spend it all at once.

Yes John Lewis have got very sneaky recently. Their old price promise meant that if they reduced the price of anything on their website within thirty five days of you having purchased it they would refund the difference. They’ve now reduced that to seven days but have dressed it up as having improved their pricing by claiming to match other places. However, they say they’ll match places like ARGOS but only if the item you want is actually in stock. This means that if ARGOS has run out of the item for example, JL can and will justify selling it at a higher price and therefore ARE knowingly undersold.

I have lost confidence in them to be honest after years of shopping there.

I never used to bother checking anything anywhere else, I just went straight to JL, since the 80s, but a few years ago they tried to deliver a mattress that was marked with what like oil and when I refused it, tried a 20% discount. For various reasons it escalated to head office and I haven't shopped there since, and am unlikely ever to bother with them again because the customer service was the absolute opposite of what I'd always experienced before.

That isn’t allowed it should be at normal price for 28 days before. Report to trading stds. Name an shame on MN then boycott.

Saw this with a few things that were already in my baskets.

Very cheeky!

Wooky073 · 05/12/2024 10:08

You are legally entitled to a refund under distance selling regulations within 14 days. Look in up online and cite the law to them. Make it clear you are not accepting the goods.

BF deals are a rip off. I bought a new iphone a few days before the BF sale from laptops direct heavily discounted. On BF the price increased by over £100 and was advertised as heavily discounted.

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 05/12/2024 10:44

Must say, I did miss out on a couple of deals through being skeptical.
Lamp reduced from £125 to £89 and a planter from £95 to £50. Both now sold out. 😶

There are some good deals out there, but only if you do the research.

Liked the John Lewis 28 day price match but it was a faff constantly checking if the price had dropped for a whole month!
The new 7 days is more doable.

Just checked my purchases from 1st Dec, no price drops but a couple of items have gone up.
2 more days of checking to go.
