Anyone else feeling totally ripped off by a Black Friday 'bargain'?

I probably am being U because if I'd read the small print this might never have happened. I splashed out on buying a suede jacket for my DS as his only present. It cost well over £100 but was reduced by £18 for B F. It arrived today. I was horrified to find a plastic bag, 12" x14" on my doorstep and the jacket stuffed inside. The suede is stiff and smelly and the jacket isn't the shape it appeared on the website. It came from Pakistan, though that isn't a problem, but it was unexpected as no mention of it was made in their website which says it's a UK family firm. Anyway, I've opened a dispute on PayPal but the company said they won't refund because it was 'in the sale' and offered me £20 as a goodwill gesture. I'm pretty hard up this year and this has sickened me. I feel so foolish.

That's standard for an electric toothbrush, I think. Don't you have a shaver socket in your bathroom?

Well, clearly no

RedRiverShore5 · 03/12/2024 21:09

We haven't got a shaving socket in the bathroom, toothbrush is charged up in the box room, bought an adapter

LigamentBandy · 03/12/2024 21:14

@Gingernaut don't be offended, if you've never had an electric brush why would you know? Lots come like yours lots come usb chargers. Tbf I've never had a shave socket in any bathroom , from childhood home to my own properties & bought the adapter. My cheapy Amazon toothbrush came with usb charge

LBFseBrom · 03/12/2024 21:22

You can return the jacket for a refund, that is your right. It sounds awful and is very disappointing for you. I've no doubt the sellers are a small UK firm but they import goods for sale, that's usual. I bought a jumper for myself some time ago and when it arrived it was dreadful and smelled awful. I moaned and got a full refund, didn't even have to return it so it went in the bin.

DreamTheMoors · 03/12/2024 21:28

I only bought necessities on BF and only if they were 30% down from what I usually pay.
The only treat I bought were kcups and those too were 30% off.
I didn’t even look at clothes or shoes or kitchen items because I didn’t want to hurt my own feelings.
You don’t miss what you don’t know about.

Make a LOT of noise. A year ago I bought a Hatch white noise machine on Wowcher, but what arrived was a cheap Chinese knock off. The seller changed the ad after I bought it to a generic knock off and removed all mention of Hatch, thankfully my order confirmation said it was the Hatch machine. Wowcher tried to say it's up to the third party to deal with it, but the Chinese seller refused (it literally was posted from China). At the end of the day, my money went to Wowcher and I spent days emailing and emailing them and fighting my corner, quoting distance seeking laws and made so much noise that Wowcher refunded me instead of the seller. I'll never touch Wowcher again. Don't give in! Good luck

The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission in Ireland are prosecuting a number of retailers for breaches of pricing regulations, including Black Friday discounts. They are due in court in January.

Rocknrollstar · 03/12/2024 21:34

Pursue this through Paypal. they will settle it for you.

Kitkat1523 · 03/12/2024 21:34

I’ve bought a balsam hill tree for ‘half price’ ….probs same price all year ….but it’s lovely and I’m really happy with it …..and a Uniqlo down coat ….from a discontinued line ……so half price…..it was out of stock in every size bar mine …,then after I bought it was out of stock full stop…..it genuinely was half price because last year I tried it on I store…..so I’m happy with my buys

UK based, online only firm selling cheap imports is most likely a dropship business. If it was advertised on FB or Instagram even more likely.

I would be so wary of things which don't have a solid reputation - there is so much imported crap around now. As said, it's not about where it's made but it's about how it's exported.

Was it real suede? You might want to let HMRC know too because imports of animal skins and products are meant to be strictly controlled but dropship type businesses avoid these rules by posting directly to the customer.

sabbii · 03/12/2024 21:36

Who did you buy it from? Sounds like a less than reputable Internet site

mumda · 03/12/2024 21:39

I bought nowt but put a lot of stuff in my grape tree basket and missed the 25% off discount. It's Ok they've got a 20% off now.. not as good and a bigger spend needed .. but still not checking out. Not yet.

Boots are doing "Better than half price" on some electric toothbrushes

I bought an Oral B Io8 (reduced from £349.99 to £149.99) and some brush heads (£27, reduced from £54) and brought it home all excited to try out my new toy

Reader, it came with a 2 pin plug

I'm going to have to go out tomorrow and get an adaptor, then charge it up, read the instructions, download the app and try to use it tomorrow

I think you find all electric toothbrushes come with a plug as you describe. Hope that makes you feel better about your purchase

Yes, feeling totally ripped off by John Lewis.

I had waited ages for a new phone (mine broken) and ordered it on the 22nd, figuring that if they dropped the price further for BF the 7 day Price Promise would kick in.

Instead they dropped the price on the 1st Dec.

They did the same on a TV I was considering. Just glad I didn’t buy that too.

Have learned my lesson though. No more BF purchases from John Lewis for me.

I was keeping an eye on a piece of tech ds wanted on Amazon.
It was listed for around £150.

About a week before Black Friday it went up to £215.
On Black Friday it was listed as 30% off: £150 reduced from £215

Wonder how many people thought they'd got a bargain.

Camel Camel Camel is great for this (tracking Amazon prices I mean!).

I am in correspondence (smiley face) with John Lewis atm , over a pathetic £10.00, which is the amount they reduced an item on Friday that I bought on Thursday. Two people/partners have said that refunds only apply to price differences from other suppliers, despite a clear message on their website and in the store that it applies to items bought within the last seven days. Grrr.

I second this. I do all my Christmas shopping in September. I check the prices again over black Friday sales just out of curiosity and it's always more than it was back in September. The whole thing is a con.

Is September better than January? I tend to do all my present shopping during the New Year sales

Wasn't Rosely London was it?

These are well known Black Friday tactics. You really need to know the standard RRP to understand whether any actual discount has been applied.

It goes in your shaver socket...in your bathroom....!

I don't have a shaver socket so mine gets charged in the kitchen. It's a shame they aren't all USB chargers now

Grmumpy · 03/12/2024 21:56

If PayPal don’t sort it out try your credit card comp for a chargeback refund although PayPal should sort it out.

lovemetomybones · 03/12/2024 22:00

I got one amazing thing which is still a deal now. Bobbl hats (which I have one which cost £45 and the Bobble extra) some styles are £5 each and the bobbles are £1. Utter bargain bought a few for birthday presents in the new year!

My boss bought a laptop for £700 last year, They had the exact same laptop for sale in the Black Friday sale for £865 two weeks later, He got an email advertising the 'sale' lol

borntoblossom · 03/12/2024 22:01

I didn't buy it but I was going to order a Dominoes pizza last week, opened the app and was so annoyed with the 'Black Friday' banners offering 50% off, as if this offer isn't available every bloody day of the year, because they double the price of the pizzas so they can pretend to discount them. And it's still very overpriced.

I was so annoyed I didn't buy it and made myself a meal instead haha. Need to boycott them permanently really for all that nonsense.

fivebyfivebuffy · 03/12/2024 22:03

I was pretty happy with my orders but I didn't get much

Filled my Amazon basket ages ago and checked the prices and total was £190
Checked again on Black Friday and total was £135
Got a new electric toothbrush - are they like sofas and never full price?!
Basically stocked up on boring stuff I needed like cat litter and floor cleaner Blush
