To think this is theft or is this acceptable for a handyman?

I book a handyman to put wall brackets and TV onto wall today. After he left I noticed that the TV swivels buy does not tilt. I also noticed that a few things are missing from the box are they are not on the TV etc. I called him and said the TV dies not tilt, he said it does but its a bit stuff etc. I also mentioned that a couple of things are missing and he said "oh I must have put them in my bag when packing away". Apparently they weren't needed for my TV just bigger TV's. I have also noticed that he has taken the wire holder that clips on to the brackets.

AIBU to expect him to return them and fix the TV so it tilts as it is supposed to?

He said he will come tomorrow to fix TV but I won't hold my breath.

Is there any steps I can take if he doesn't turn up tomorrow? He has also taken the allen key, wire holder, exstention parts and probably more. My main concern it the TV not moving how it should and would just like him to fix it.

He is an independent handyman not working for a company etc so not sure what I would be able to do about it should he not turn up.

Did you pay for the bracket separately? If so he should have left you all the extra parts. If it was one price to fit and install the bracket then he’s done what you asked. If he doesn’t come back then I’d give him one more chance and then write a factual review on Google/Facebook.

I would text to confirm him coming tomorrow and say “please can you bring the unused items from the box back with you”.

Have you paid him yet?

Dotto · 03/12/2024 18:48

YANBU to ask for them back, as you've mentioned it he'll probably return them tomorrow. Some people find it a hassle to dispose of those bits & bobs themselves, but he should have asked you.

My plumber replacing a shower, took the old (working) shower away with him unasked. I had to ask for it back so I could make a few pounds back selling it.

Get recommendations for handymen in the future.

2dogsandabudgie · 03/12/2024 18:50

It wouldn't bother me if he took bits that were only suitable for a larger TV. Less rubbish for me to store in a drawer.

I would wait and see if he turns up tomorrow, is there any reason why you think he won't?

Commonsense22 · 03/12/2024 18:50

He ideally should leave the bits but trust me, your handyman is not intentionally collecting random fixtures for his own gain. They just put stuff in their many pockets as they work their many jobs.

His partner / wife is likely fed up with the mountain of screws and hinges piling up on her sideboard every evening (no personal experience or anything there...)

Mrsgreen100 · 03/12/2024 18:51

Hope you have not paid him yet

Butterfliessky · 03/12/2024 19:09

Yes I have already paid him and the bracket are mine which I bought separately. I will keep my fingers crossed that he turns up tomorrow, fixes TV and return the unused parts.

Really people, handymen and other tradesmen do not need MORE random fixtures. He picked them up as he was tidying probably thinking he was doing you a favour.

If the tv is not fixed to your liking that's a different matter.

stargazerlil · 03/12/2024 21:33

He should bring them back, it doesn’t really matter if he took them by accident or not, he should have been more aware of what he was doing and not made you stress. It’s not on to pay someone to do something for you and it result in them stressing you out.

Wolfpa · 03/12/2024 21:46

It’s sad that you have already made your mind up that he has stolen from you and he is not coming back.

wait until tomorrow and see what happens.

^ This!

Wife has probably got a collection of screws/wall plugs/washers pulled from the washing machine after washing his work clothes too.

GreenSkyes · 03/12/2024 22:34

I don't think it's been intentional, he could've asked 'do you want me to keep these and the packaging'.
I don't understand what you're going to do with the brackets for the bigger TV and other bits (yes I get that isn't really the point). The Allen key I get, but I'd be greatful I didn't need to get rid of the bits.
The TV not moving as it should, he should definitely come back and fix. I'd be a bit annoyed over that.

Butterfliessky · 04/12/2024 22:56

He didn't turn up as suspected. Thankfully I have managed to get the TV to tilt anyways.
