To wonder why people bother selling £1 items on Vinted?

Started selling recently, and put quite a few things individually for £1 or so. I was assuming people would buy in bundles, as that's what I've always done, to make the postage worthwhile. I've done maximum bundle discounts to encourage this

However, sales are coming in fairly well, but almost all are just single items! Even with reusing packaging so minimising spending on that, it just doesn't seem worth the time and effort of putting on the listing, then packaging it up, sending etc for £1.

What are other people's experiences? Do you think it's worth selling small value things individually or do you bundle everything yourself? Do your buyers bundle things? Should I just suck it up or not bother with the low price stuff?

I haven't done any bundles but I don't normally bother selling something for less than £5. It's just not worth the time by the time I've done the listing, packaged the thing up, driven to the locker etc (especially if you have to wait for a locker to become free or drive further to get a free locker etc etc) - all these things eat up time and effort so it depends what works for you personally I think.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 03/12/2024 15:50

I've made a couple of grand over the last 18 months (yes I am aware of HRMC regs), i just want it gone from the house. The kids take it to post and they like going to the lockers.

I've sold some higher value stuff but normally at the £1-3 mark.

bugalugs45 · 03/12/2024 15:54

I remember starting out on Vinted , panicking about negative feedback for late posting or bad packaging that I bought a Jiffy bag ( £1 ) then drive to 2 different lockers as the first one was full. The item was £2.50 😂
I now only post when k can walk past whilst out with my dog and reuse packaging all time . Cereal boxes are a current favourite , I cut to size !

ImWearingPantaloons · 03/12/2024 15:55

We're living in a cost of living crisis.

I get to shift clothes out and get a bit of money, people who buy them get cheap clothes!

RobertaFirmino · 03/12/2024 15:58

Many people have to watch every single pound. Good luck to them.

ThisAquaCrow · 03/12/2024 15:58

I’m just doing it slowly snd steadily to get rid of stuff. I’d rather do this than donate to charity shops who absolutely rip the arse out of second hands clothes-Primark T shirts being listed fot £5 🤦‍♀️

anon2022anon · 03/12/2024 16:02

Because even if it's £1, it's motivating me to get something out the house at the minute, and funds towards whatever else. I do tend to list at higher prices, but I've got piles of stuff, that haven't sold at higher price, but have survived the 'just donate or recycle it' culls. Because it's BNWT, or sentimental, whatever the reason. Listing it low fuels the motivation to keep on going, as well as boosting your Vinted listings. I also offer items for free- if someone buys a bundle of gloves, I've offered them socks that fit at the same age that I've found in the house.

That being said, I live a 5 minute walk from an Evri shop, have to go that way for the school run regularly, and I will happily hang on for a few days to send several cheap parcels together. I also have been selling for a looooong time, so I have all the materials I need and buy them cheaply.

I'm at about £4k of stuff cleared this year, so I'm happy to keep going 😊

BlitheSpirits · 03/12/2024 16:02

to keep it out of landfill, perhaps?

GrazeConcern · 03/12/2024 16:05

@boulevardofbrokendreamss if you’re just selling your own stuff 2nd hand the hmrc regulations don’t count anyway. You could make £20,000 but if you bought the stuff new for £40,0000 and are thereby making a loss there’d be no tax to pay.

So you've sold over 650 items? Is it mainly clothes? I can't imagine having that much stuff that I don't need/want.

Soooooooverthisnow · 03/12/2024 16:22

I think Vinted is totally flooded now. I've got hundreds of things listed that haven't sold in a year+. Nearly everything I have listed is less than £3 and hardly anyone bundles. I've set it to holiday mode until I can delete everything and going to list it on eBay as big bundles 20+ items for like £15 just to get shut of the stuff. Will still use Vinted but not for anything less than say £7 listing price.

EmotionalSupportPotato · 03/12/2024 16:23

It's up to you isn't it. £1 is £1

YellowHatt · 03/12/2024 16:24

To keep it out of landfill/pass it on. And put money into my Vinted balance so I can buy on there without using my own money (if that makes sense?).

bestbefore · 03/12/2024 16:26

@bugalugs45 you can buy big bundled of postage bags one eBay - pennies each that way!

xyz111 · 03/12/2024 16:27

I've sold loads of things for £1. It all adds up. I use it as an excuse on my lunch break to walk down to the in post lockers. My DH bought me a big bundle of grey postage's bags from Amazon to use. And I keep any packaging I can to reuse. Or even carrier bags!

FKAT · 03/12/2024 16:31

I'd rather sell stuff for £1 on Vinted to someone who actively wants it than put into landfill OR pile it into the local charity shop, which has 2 backrooms full of donations, where it will wait for months getting musty and even if it makes it to the shop then has to rely on a customer coming in wanting that very item. I sell a mix of stuff from £1 to £50. If something doesn't sell it then either is recycled or charity shop.

Teddybear120 · 03/12/2024 16:31

I put loads on recently. Mix of stuff from one to ten pounds. Some of the cheaper stuff people bundles but a lot of it is single items. I live in a city and I have places to drop them off on my way home from the school run. I’m on mat leave so every penny counts. I do try to buy bundles though rather than single items as it saves on postage. However if I really love an item I will buy a single one but very rarely.

LetThereBeLove · 03/12/2024 16:34

Any money I make from sales from £2.50 to £20 goes on nearly new things from Vinter. Changed my entire wardrobe that way. In any case 'every little helps' and my post office/evri drop off is very close to home.

DinosaurMunch · 03/12/2024 17:20

Is there any easy way of bundling things? It seems a bit hit and miss - message seller, they don't reply for several days, someone else then buys item etc

TheDandyLion · 03/12/2024 17:24

Saves it from landfill.

charlieinthehaystack · 03/12/2024 17:35

it all mounts up in the end. let my money mount up then when i see something i want i get either clothes or craft bits or home things. its lovely to not use my everyday money for treats, bought a tshirt earlier one i have always wanted for £2 really happy. i sell lots of £1 things esp this time of year

SJM1988 · 03/12/2024 17:37

Completly worth it in my opinion. I've made £400 this year selling things for £1 or £2.
I reuse old packaging and the drop off are both on my way to work so no extra costs really

WeeWigglet · 03/12/2024 17:38

Because its £1 and an excuse walk to the locker, or nothing and a trip to the clothes bank.

The only mildly annoying thing is storing items while waiting to see if anyone buys - charity bag means they're instantly gone.

Doggymummar · 03/12/2024 17:39

I sold a jumper today for £3 and I would usually post same day, but it's cold and dark so it can wait till the weekend for once. I've made over a grand this year just on selling stuff that's too big for me. It all adds up. I bought three bras last week for a quid each too

EmmerdaleFan78 · 03/12/2024 17:41

YANBU. Same on FB marketplace. I’ve given stuff away loads of times as I’d be too embarrassed to ask £1 for it 😂😂
