To wonder why people bother selling £1 items on Vinted?

Started selling recently, and put quite a few things individually for £1 or so. I was assuming people would buy in bundles, as that's what I've always done, to make the postage worthwhile. I've done maximum bundle discounts to encourage this

However, sales are coming in fairly well, but almost all are just single items! Even with reusing packaging so minimising spending on that, it just doesn't seem worth the time and effort of putting on the listing, then packaging it up, sending etc for £1.

What are other people's experiences? Do you think it's worth selling small value things individually or do you bundle everything yourself? Do your buyers bundle things? Should I just suck it up or not bother with the low price stuff?

For me it’s the satisfaction that someone has picked out my item and really wants it. The idea that it will get used again. I sell almost everything for £1 and I get such a rush when they’re sold!

comoatoupeira · 03/12/2024 20:47

But yes I do find it odd how few people buy bundles
and I’m wouldn’t do it if I had to drive to a locker

comoatoupeira · 03/12/2024 20:49

I just read the thread and I think the answer is you sell stuff for £1 if your reason for doing it is mainly something else than money

TheBeesKnee · 03/12/2024 20:53

I've bought single things for £1 because it's been the only thing I like from a seller or a specific thing I'm looking for.

When I sell I don't do smaller than 3 unless it's a coat or specific item that costs a bit more on its own.

Thatcastlethere · 03/12/2024 20:54

I sell things for one pound. It's harder work but money is money. I reuse packaging and walk to the drop off point so it's nearly all profit apart from printer ink and tape!
Times are hard!
I listed 87 things yesterday ranging in price from 1 quid to a tenner.
I have 3 kids so they go thru clothing sizes like no ones business. Anything still in decent condition I sell then use the money to buy them new stuff.
From the listing yesterday I've already sold 45 quids worth of stuff and majority of that was individual 1 quid items.

I only really sell kids clothes but I tend to put sleepsuits up for £1 each, as people wouldn’t buy a bundle of 5 for £5 but they’ll go through my items and create their own bundle of 5 individual items for £5 if you see what I mean (I always preferred that as a buyer too, as in bundles there’s always a few bits I don’t like!

Yes, this was my theory. But no one is bundling, there's just lots of people buying one thing!

I haven't read all the posts but I've been 'had' by a scam like this.

Basically they charge high for the postage, so when you realise you want to return something, you only get the £1, while they've got more than the value for the item regardless of whether you return it. Chances are, you won't even return it because a £1 item isn't worth the return postage refund.

Say,

£3 item value
£1 sale price
£6 their postage charge
£2 actual postage cost

Cost to buy for you is £7. Profit for them is £2

Cost to return for you is £2
You get back £1
Total cost to you is -£7

Net income for them is £1

I think this used to happen on eBay but vinted doesn't work like this.

haha I mean sometimes if it’s something specific I’m after (like a specific baby outfit that I had for DD1 but got lost / stained and I want the same one for DD2 😅), I will just buy one thing for £1, but I usually try to find sellers who are selling other things I want.

From a selling perspective I seem to sell more when I price things individually, any bundles I list never go!

It used to be possible to do this on vinted but not anymore

Thatcastlethere · 05/12/2024 23:31

Yeah you can't do that scam on vinted as the postage costs are fixed before hand and the buyer buys a specific postage label that you have to use. If you don't use the specific label they bought it won't log it on vinted as having been posted and you wouldn't get the money from the sale at all. So it wouldn't work trying to charge people extra for postage.

All my £1/3 items have made £200 it's closer to drop to a locker than the charity shop which mostly never wants donations lately.
Our local corner shop also except locker items.

Parceling it up takes minutes, wrap in a bag stick label on.

Have found I lost maybe 10 items and they all sell within maybe 2 days. Send together then list more
