To wonder why people bother selling £1 items on Vinted?

Started selling recently, and put quite a few things individually for £1 or so. I was assuming people would buy in bundles, as that's what I've always done, to make the postage worthwhile. I've done maximum bundle discounts to encourage this

However, sales are coming in fairly well, but almost all are just single items! Even with reusing packaging so minimising spending on that, it just doesn't seem worth the time and effort of putting on the listing, then packaging it up, sending etc for £1.

What are other people's experiences? Do you think it's worth selling small value things individually or do you bundle everything yourself? Do your buyers bundle things? Should I just suck it up or not bother with the low price stuff?

I sell things for a pound because the drop off points are next to my house or work and I'd go a few times a week anyway. I usually reuse packaging so no costs there.

If I think something is only worth a pound and I have several similar items, I just bundle them together myself. So a bundle of three T-shirts for £3 rather than selling them individually.

You can buy lovely kids’ coats/football boots/gloves etc on Vinted for £5. So if you sell five little bits on there, you can use the money in your balance you buy your kid a new coat. I’m quite surprised at how people can’t see why some people would want/need to do this.

Yes if I sell things for just a few pounds...I don't even bother to transfer to my bank account...I just use it to buy things I want on there

PassingStranger · 03/12/2024 18:47

More and more people give things away free now.
I couldn't be bothered for a pound.
I sometimes donate to charity shops or clothes swaps.

BeerForMyHorses · 03/12/2024 18:51

I wouldn't buy anything for £1 unless I really needed it.

Item. £1
Fees 0.70p
Postage £3

You're looking at spending almost a fiver in a £1 item.

Nottodaythankyou123 · 03/12/2024 18:53

I only really sell kids clothes but I tend to put sleepsuits up for £1 each, as people wouldn’t buy a bundle of 5 for £5 but they’ll go through my items and create their own bundle of 5 individual items for £5 if you see what I mean (I always preferred that as a buyer too, as in bundles there’s always a few bits I don’t like!

PurBal · 03/12/2024 18:55

I sell to get stuff out of the house and get my steps in. Money isn't a factor. We don't have a charity shop that's easy to deliver to so might as well make £1 than drive miles.

TheSomething · 03/12/2024 18:56

I've sold lots of items on vinted for £1. Sometimes just one item on its own, sometimes people buy bundles.

I reuse parcel packaging I've received myself to send with, and if I don't have any I go to the corner shop and they happily supply me with some cardboard boxes.

Parcel drop off points for me are within walking distance.

I'm happy to sell for £1 at a time. It all adds up and I then tend to use the funds to buy on vinted the next size my child needs.

I always look at total cost when buying something. If it is worth the total cost to me I buy it.

I also do this when selling. So if I think a t shirt is worth about £3 orr £4 I lost for £1 as I know the buyer will end up paying more than that.

I thought that's how most people used Vinted.

Just because the item is selling for £1, doesn't mean it's only worth £1. Sometimes buying something, even with fees is cheaper than anywhere else I could get it and many items are new or barely worn, especially seasonal items. I don't have a local supermarket that sells kids clothes or a cheap kids clothes shop, so I have to pay delivery or petrol anyway.

Vinted is certainly cheaper than my local charity shops!

I had a look in a charity shop window the other day...Primark boots for £18!

bifurCAT · 03/12/2024 18:59

I haven't read all the posts but I've been 'had' by a scam like this.

Basically they charge high for the postage, so when you realise you want to return something, you only get the £1, while they've got more than the value for the item regardless of whether you return it. Chances are, you won't even return it because a £1 item isn't worth the return postage refund.

Say,

£3 item value
£1 sale price
£6 their postage charge
£2 actual postage cost

Cost to buy for you is £7. Profit for them is £2

Cost to return for you is £2
You get back £1
Total cost to you is -£7

Net income for them is £1

Therealmetherealme · 03/12/2024 19:01

I started selling items on Vinted in November. Just kids clothes and toys that are no longer used. Most items are around £2-£4 but some at £1.

I drop off sold items at a locker on my school run, free parking and never a queue.

So far I've made around £60.

It's a lot less hassle than taking them to a charity shop.

LittleLlama · 03/12/2024 19:02

I do sell the odd item for £1, but prefer to bundle items up. I believe you can buy items cheaper on vinted or eBay than in a charity shop these days.

In terms of buying items, I always buy items in bundles (usually listed separately). I have just received four tops in the post all good (one particularly fabulous) for £12 including postage and buyers fees. I think buying secondhand clothes has become much more acceptable.

I still buy and give items to Charity shops occasionally. I have taken a few bags of items to two different Charity Shops today. These were items I thought people might buy for Christmas or the cold weather (i.e. coats, Christmas jumpers, etc.) On Vinted you don’t have to be so careful (so you can sell summer clothes now, as long as you sell at a lower price).

Goinggold · 03/12/2024 19:04

I'm ridiculously grateful to people who sell things - my DC is ND and has limited acceptable clothing, so I'm constantly looking for things in the next size up. Just got something in 11-12 which DC has had in every size since 2-3, so it's years old!

MidnightMeltdown · 03/12/2024 19:05

YANBU

People selling items for £1 must have an awful lot of time on their hands! Personally I wouldn't bother for anything worth less than a tenner.

Just bundle it up and drop it off at the clothing bank at the local supermarket.

rockstep · 03/12/2024 19:07

If it's not a big deal to post (I go to post office all the time) then £1 is more than you'd get at a boot sale and it all adds up. I mostly have £2 as my minimum unless you sell books then it's worth it at a £1.

It takes maybe 2 minutes total to list and package an item, and the drop off is somewhere I'm going anyway so 0 minutes there. Does that really count as having a lot of time on my hands?

And £1 for 2 minutes of effort is £30 an hour, which is a pretty good rate of return to me 🤷‍♀️

chickenwings2 · 03/12/2024 19:11

I'm so glad! I've got some right good stuff for a quid

Phonicshaskilledmeoff · 03/12/2024 19:13

I usually bundle things together myself rather than list separately. Ie if I’ve got 3 t shorts of similar brand/colour I will stick them together. Seem to sell quicker that way too.

MidnightMeltdown · 03/12/2024 19:17

It takes 2 minutes to properly photograph something, let alone iron it (if needed), list it, find the appropriate packaging, label it etc. Personally I don't go to the post office on a daily basis so it wouldn't be a case of 'going there anyway'.

I haven't labeled a Vinted parcel ever. Just use the InPost Digital labels. It's fine if you can't be bothered to list and sell things for £1 but some people don't find it any hassle and are happy to have the £1 in their pocket.

henlake7 · 03/12/2024 19:30

Im really glad people do sell stuff for £1....Ive gotten some lovely bargains!
Most recently a gorgeous cardigan, even with P&P it was still cheaper then a charity shop.
I always do check out the sellers other stuff to see if I can make a bundle its just most of the time I really cant find anything else I like the look of!

phoenixrosehere · 03/12/2024 19:35

I do bundles and singles on Vinted.

I’m not anti-charity shop, and have noticed that the cost tends to be higher and not everyone can go into a charity shop or several and spend ages looking through it either. Plus, I know by selling that the item is going to someone who wants the item.

It’s also easier for me to drop a package off (have Evri, Yodel, and Inpost within a 15 min walk) which means I get some added steps in and the extra walking pays off. Helped me keep with and exceed my walking goals the past few months. Making money and becoming more fit balances out the effort to post for me.

AddieLoggins2 · 03/12/2024 19:59

Because that's the lowest Vinted lets you sell it for. I'd give it away for £0 if I could! It's worth it to save it going to landfill or if it helps someone else out.
Charity shops seem to be heaving and I'm not listing on Facebook because I don't want strangers coming to the house.

Packing - I just use the post bags I get stuff delivered in. Postage - the lockers are literally at the entrance/exit to my estate - I drive past them at least twice a day.

I only sell stuff for £1 that would be worth about £5 though, otherwise it's not worth it for the buyer.

Put item on hanger, hang on doorframe, snap 3 photos, fold and put in a plastic bag, tape it up. Genuinely takes 2 minutes. No one needs a detailed fashion shoot or for you to iron a £1 item, don't be silly.

And who said anything about going to the post office on a daily basis? I don't either- I walk past a parcel locker or corner shop 2 or 3 times a week in the course of my normal life.
