How do holidays work in special school?

Hi all,

My son is starting school in September, and it's looking like it's likely to be a special school, although we're not 100% sure yet. (We've been asked to apply for mainstream, but after speaking with the team who put his EHCP together it sounds like special is more appropriate).

Anyway to get to the point we have a holiday booked from the 11th September to the 25th September because it's a quieter time and better for my son.

I think because he's under 5 we won't be fined but I'm worried he might lose his place in special school if we go on the holiday.

If a special school is named in March (or whenever we find out) is it worth emailing the school and advising them and asking for the procedure/permission or do I need to wait until September?

I'm just a bit confused.

Thanks

My DD goes to a special school, the process for holidays is the same as mainstream school, so no worry about losing his place if you need to take him out.

You won't lose your place :)
And generally special schools are much more lenient about granting holiday time in term time, because they recognise that it can be difficult to go in busy holiday periods.
(I've worked in a special school for 20 years and my son attended special school and I've never seen a request turned down!)

I wouldn’t worry about a term time holiday but so early in a new school personally I would be looking to move it to let him get used to routines. Maybe go just before Easter holidays or something if you can.
