My 11 yt old daughter has an itchy scalp and it's driving her mad. I've checked for lice and can't see anything. I'm.using the new head and shoulders shampoo and a creamy conditioner. I'm also putting the head and shoulders liquid for dry scalp.bit nothing seems to help.
Anyone any other ideas?

T-Gel

Switch to Child Farm baby shampoo. I have a very sensitive scalp and it works for me.

You can try T Gel/Poltar, but you might find she reacts to that too. I use it once in a while but not too often.

Also a scalp scrubber/massager to make sure scalp is clean (Amazon)

Some shampoos and conditioners contain the so-called 'itchy Ms' which make some people itch like crazy. First step is to check for these. curlscan.com/blog/6/help-my-scalp-is-so-itchy

I also find conditioning my scalp really helps with dry itchiness. I know it goes against everything we usually hear but after a small adjustment period I also found my hair doesn't get as greasy and my hair condition is so much better. You don't need to put a lot on the scalp, I just do my scalp with what's left on my hands after doing the lengths.

My 10yo had this recently, T Gel did sort it out

I’ve always found head and shoulders shampoos give me horribly flaky and itchy skin.
I like the E45 shampoo for sensitive/itchy scalps, and Aveeno conditioner (the apple cider vinegar one). Makes such a difference to mine and my kids heads!

Definitely TGel. My son had a huge patch of brown crusty flaky skin on his scalp that keep flaking off onto his hair and looked horrible and was itchy for him. We tried head and shoulders bit it didn't work, but a couple of weeks using TGel twice a week it was gone, and his hair is so much softer and his scalp isn't itchy or flaky any more. 10 quid a bottle on Amazon

Totally natural non toxic Caster oil. Around £8 on Amazon, we use Jamaican Sunny Isle. It's thick and gloomy. Use a tiny bit in your hands, rub together to emulsify and massage into the scalp. It absorbs really well. Do this twice a week and leave on overnight. In the morning add a mild no sulphates or silicon shampoo and lightly wash the hair.

Do not overwash the hair. Just twice a week max. Caster oil is wonderful for skin and stimulating hair growth, improving skin health.

Be very fussy with the shampoo you use.

I had this recently l. It turned out to be eczema and then folliculitis (an infection of the hair folllicles). Have you had a close look at her scalp? Does it look irritated?

I had to get meds from the GP for both.

MooGoo do excellent shampoo,
conditioner and a scalp cream. Both kids have sensitivities and this has cleared it up.

MyrtleStrumpet · 03/12/2024 14:16

Depends what's causing it. If it's yeast, then Nizoral Head and Shoulders will sort it out. If it's excema then E45 and if it's the other one T-Gel.

Try one for two weeks. If it doesn't get better try another for two weeks. If it's yeast then she may need to see the doctor who can prescribe stronger Nizoral.

lovelysunshine22 · 03/12/2024 15:04

I get this all the time! I can't use any other shampoo apart from head and shoulders or medicated ones.

Onlycoffee · 03/12/2024 15:09

Are you seeing dry flaky skin? If not it could be a fungal overgrowth, Nizoral is amazing. It's a small bottle but you only need a little amount each time. One bottle should clear it up.

I came on to say the same. It's brilliant stuff.

As above, itchy scalp is caused by different things and you need to figure out what to treat it.

fungal - nizoral
eczema - steroid cream or other
allergy - sensitive shampoo
irritated - low soap shampoo / oil
