The teacher from Batley is still in hiding

Teacher Batley
His life ruined because a bunch of thugs decided they didn't like what he was teaching in his RE lesson.
This and the Labour MP's request for bhalsphey laws against those of the Abrahamic faith have made me concerned.

People should be free to offer an view against another's religion. It's scary that we are being a country where people thing being offended gives them a right to made death threats.

Batley Grammar School teacher felt “totally isolated” “abandoned” and “suicidal” due to inadequate support from relevant agencies.

An official review, due to be published on Monday 25th March, 2024, is set to recommend the banning of protests outside schools, following a concerning incident where a teacher was forced into hidi…

I believe in free speech, but threatening someone for using it is just as bad as singling out Muslims all the time. The teacher singled out Muslims, which is why the head apologised.

I'm astounded that the education system even suggested that caricatures of muhammed be used.

Yet they would probably not object to The Life of Brian being shown in school because it may invoke some complaints but threats of murder would be very unlikely.
Many years ago a series of Maths text books had some beautiful Islamic art on the covers, something I liked to point out to pupils. However one parent, and his community leader, chose to object to the blasphemous use of this beautiful art and demanded that we had all the books covered. As Head of Maths refused and told him he could come in and cover them all, the Senior staff didn't openly back me but eventually he dropped it.

Did he?

Did he not use any imagery for any other religions he was teaching? Just for Islam?

The head will have apologized to de escalate the situation obviously , a situation crated by violent zealots. Who have no business sticking their noses into a 6th form curriculum in a secular school

Maybe they need a hobby, obviously too much time on their hands.

But if that image being satirised despite it being likely to cause offence that makes it ok?

Yes. If it's being discussed in context, with children old enough to engage in nuanced discussion about the subject matter and its presentation. Do you really need to ask?!

ARealitycheck · 03/12/2024 21:58

MonikerTwo · 03/12/2024 21:49

Well the reality is we are at risk of losing our right to free speech if we all follow your way of thinking.

I was told many years ago by a man far brighter than me, to consider free speech as what is appropriate for the situation. I wouldn't walk up to Mike Tyson after the fight a couple of weeks back and call him a big jessie and that I could take him any time. I am entirely free to do that, knowing it would cause offence and likely get a punch stops me.

If the images were shown to a group of christian children I know it is highly unlikely they will be offended. But to do it to a group I would strongly believe could find it offensive suggests at best I'm thoughtless.

Not with bombs in their head, no.

The images are a red herring, it’s the assumption that Muslims should just accept being treated differently that causes anger.

No it is not. It is some people demanding everyone kow tows to their nonsense , and making death threats to someone doing their job

Well I think I’ve got the message. You’re the type who thinks it’s best to give in to bullies because they are threatening.

It’s the exact opposite.
Some Muslims demand to be treated differently and that causes anger.

Or maybe teachers need to be educated better. If he had done his homework he would have known that Muslims do not ever create depictions of the prophets, even positive ones. Then he could have pre warned parents that there would be imagery used and explained why. And parents should have been given the right to say they didn’t want their child present.

That their religious beliefs are followed by everyone.

That images of their prophet are never shown. That questioning of their practises are not permitted. That they can harass people out of their jobs and make death threats without repercussions.

Don't be coy or faux naive.

Appalonia · 03/12/2024 22:08

I think it's also really concerning that a Muslim MP stood up in Parliament recently, asking for a blasphemy law and Keir Starmer did not automatically say no. We cannot go down this road as a country, especially as women.

Or he should do the job he is paid to do, in a secular school, in a secular country to children doing A levels. In many cases in preparation for university. Which involves critical thinking.

Not blindly swallowing medieval rubbish

You clearly think showing the image was correct. Print some off, go down to Batley and hand them out friday evening outside the mosque saying they are wrong to persecute this man.

It’s appalling. Particularly when so much of public organised Islam is so deeply anti-Semitic. Seems it’s ok to be rude or satirical about the Jews, but not put Islam.

We live in a country where there is religious freedom. Rightly, freedom of worship is a British value. And with hat goes the freedom to mock, to satirise, to criticise religions.

The Jewish community is being absolutely terrorised atm and no one even knows about it - and if they do, it's just denying it was a hate crime or saying it is deserved.

A school that members of my family both teach and study at was attacked last week. They've already had to cancel all after-school activities since the attack on 7 Oct, hire their own bus service to keep students safe, and require students to hide their uniforms outside school because of so many incidents that it's just not safe.

When the right group spreads hate, it's ok to stand against it, but when the 'wrong' group does it, it's ignored.

Don’t be ridiculous. Muslims don’t give a shit what you do let alone demand you follow their religion 😂. They’re busy with their own lives, you don’t merit a thought.

Is your local Muslim GP, dinner lady, pharmacist, takeaway worker, bank manager or teacher harassing you with death theats then? Name and shame here.

I’d rather stand outside Batley school with posters protesting about the cowardly, weaselly pathetic senior management of the school that failed to support a teacher against bullying thugs .

ARealitycheck · 03/12/2024 22:13

Just done a little more research. The image he showed was the 'je suis charlie' one from charlie ebdo. Which was renowned worldwide for causing muslim offence. The mid 20's teacher was stupid.
