The teacher from Batley is still in hiding

Teacher Batley
His life ruined because a bunch of thugs decided they didn't like what he was teaching in his RE lesson.
This and the Labour MP's request for bhalsphey laws against those of the Abrahamic faith have made me concerned.

People should be free to offer an view against another's religion. It's scary that we are being a country where people thing being offended gives them a right to made death threats.

Batley Grammar School teacher felt “totally isolated” “abandoned” and “suicidal” due to inadequate support from relevant agencies.

An official review, due to be published on Monday 25th March, 2024, is set to recommend the banning of protests outside schools, following a concerning incident where a teacher was forced into hidi…

I am stunned by a lot of the comments here. This is a free country and we have the right to follow any religion or none.

What some people are demanding is the right to enforce obedience to their religion and respect for their god.

If we don’t have freedom to be rude (not violent) and offend (not harm or threaten) people, then we don’t have freedom, full stop. And we would be very stupid to throw away our freedom.

What about the two men fined for burning a poppy on Armistive Day? Did you defend their right to offend?

which included pictures of the Prophet Muhammad, the Pope and Jesus Christ. Pupils were shown a caricature of the Prophet Muhammad wearing a turban containing a cartoon bomb.

It sounds like the images of the Pope and Jesus were not offensive caricatures. If they were, they would have said it.

This is what I mean by Muslims being singled out.

Schools in this country need training on unconscious bias.

We know the lesson was about blasphemy and free speech so we could just as easily surmise that the other pictures were satirical. It didn't say offensive caricatures because in the UK satire is not generally responded to with death threats. Unless the satire is about Muhammed.

But, we don't know, do we? Although you happily present your imaginings as fact.

It's such a shame lessons on rational thought get hijacked like that because if there's something the world could do with more of, it's rational thought. That would render the ridiculous 'unconscious bias training' and other spurious brainwashing redundant.

I’ve answered that clearly several times upthread. Have you read my responses?

Why the constant need for repetition?

The lesson should go ahead. But with an opportunity for parents to withdraw their children. As the law allows.

Exactly
There are more Christian’s in the country expected to suck it up but let’s not offend….mmmm….let’s pick and chose a religion we shouldn’t offend ….mmmm that’ll be the XXX that threaten us with our lives…..mmm….but it’s ok to offend all the others…….
The others luckily wouldn’t be offended because they would understand the actual purpose of the lesson which is the basic problem here

Ok Jeremy Paxton. Read the thread, I’ve answered several times. I don’t perform
for you.

No
They wouldn’t have said it because they are only interested in the image of the Prophet Mohammed
Why bring up the other images , no one made death threats about them because the class was about blasphemy
Examples of blasphemy were presented to explain
Blasphemy

Why have the Pope at all if he’s not going to be relevant you might as well have a picture of a tree
Of course all the images were blasphemous, this is a teaching environment!!

Are images of the pope, jesus, god, talking bush, or the tree you describe considered a crime in the view of Christians. No.
In the case of many muslims an image of muhammed is.

As I understand it this was a group of circa 15 year olds so still within the control of parents. Had it been university/college level and discussing philosophy your argument would have merit. A group of young teenagers in a majority muslim area, pretty poor thinking on whoever ok'd it.

You’re not expected to suck it up. You have the right to withdraw your child if you want to.

This reminds me of the religious backlash on
Charles Darwin’s Theory of Evolution

maybe we should stop teaching that too. All people were born of Adam and Eve, or should it be………insert other religious idea

They definitely would have said it because they would have been at pains to show they aren’t treating Muslims differently.

But they did treat Muslims differently.

Those children could be taught the same lesson without the image of muhammed. It would likey have more effect had the images they recognised been shown and the muslim one missed with explanation why.

Or better still remove religion in all it's forms from education.

Because some parents would have withdrawn their kids.

And it would be in the report.
