Child Headphones

Dh wants to get our ds headphones for Christmas. Dh desperate to get due to hearing ds iPad being played loud when Dh trying to watch tv etc.

But.
I don’t. Reason: I am concerned with overuse at such a young age. Our ds is 6yo. I just know headphones will be constantly used from wake up to bedtime and at max volume.

Dh thinks I’m being daft as they will be kids headphones, therefore totally safe.

Dh refuses to discuss / commit to us agreeing to some rules (because ds is 6yo) about the headphones (time using each day or for using for certain situations etc).

Dh refusing to discuss topic isn’t helping me feel less concerned. I am willing to hear others viewpoints in case I am being worried unnecessarily?

Am I being unreasonable?
Thanks!

Kids headphones have noise limiters.
surely they’d only be used morning til night if attached to a device? In which case that’s your issue, not headphones.

Agree with PP. Your child can only use headphone 24/7 of he has no other boundaries in place. Judging by the fact that he is using iPad and on full volume while another person in the household is watching TV, perhaps it's a legitimate concern. How about you both get him the headphones AND explain that it is impolite to do what he is doing. At the very least, the general public won't have to put up with the noise as, I assume, he is doing the same on planes, busses and in restaurants. Clearly, I have very little patience for that so my advice is understandably biased. I'm team DH.

Thanks.
Ds doesn’t use iPad in public places.
Ds uses at home, or if we have long distance car journeys (once or twice a year).

With me, ds uses iPad max 30 mins if that collectively in a day.

With Dh or grandparents, iPad usage is constant.

Therefore. When ds is with others that allow constant iPad use in the home (when I am not there to control the iPad usage) … the constant use of headphones won’t be detrimental on a 6yo ears in any way?

No, why would headphones be any additionally detrimental, assuming an appropriate volume limit?

mynameiscalypso · 01/12/2024 19:02

DS is 5 and he has headphones for my iPad, mainly to use when we're travelling. I don't really see any downside to using them really. If they're using a screen all day, I think headphones are the least of your worries

JC89 · 01/12/2024 19:06

An iPad at full volume is probably much louder than noise limited headphones, they really don't go very loud! Can't you set the iPad up with time limits so he can't use it constantly?

Horriblehistoree · 01/12/2024 19:06

We got DS6 some bone conducting headphones so he can still hear if he is being spoken to etc.

Ouh36 · 01/12/2024 19:08

If your ds really does only use the iPad for the times you say then why the concern? Probably because he uses it far more than you say he does.

Scottishskifun · 01/12/2024 19:09

Kids Headphones have noise limiters on them, it's actually quieter then the ipad volume even if you try putting on max.

The bigger issue is your DH not working as a team with you and to set rules about ipad use and time (long journeys exemptions)

Gotalottodo · 01/12/2024 19:17

See that’s my point. If they were to be used for certain situations - such as travelling - then I see no problem and I also see them as being beneficial.

Unfortunately I cannot control my ds iPad usage when I am not there.

I was just worried that constant daily use of headphones would not be healthy (to go along with his iPad usage). I already have that argument which I can’t control. I just instantly thought constant headphones on top cannot be healthy … but never the less I thought will not help but make iPad situation worse … possibly create more problems of ds ending up using iPad even more whilst at home …

Thanks everyone - been helpful x
