To buy baby related Christmas gift!

Hi all

My sibling and partner are expecting their first baby in 2025.

I have bought them both a non-baby related Christmas gift, but would it be unreasonable to buy them something to put away for the baby too? A crib, Moses basket etc.

Their living expenses eat up most of their income, but they’ve managed to get a couple of second hand bargains for baby. I would like to treat them to something new to help them out but I don’t want them to think I’m being over bearing or offend them!

Christmas is the last time I’ll see them before baby is due.

Sounds lovely of you

Some people are superstitious about giving gifts before baby is born, and some people will want to tell you what is needed, but as long as you tread carefully on those things, I think it would be nice.

Sounds lovely, but I think it’s something I’d get their input on rather than springing it on them.

When in 2025?

If January or February, fine. Any further on, I wouldn't.

I also wouldn't choose them a crib or moses basket without their input. You could get them a voucher so they can choose?

I would ask them what they wanted rather than just buying something. Alternatively you could buy a John Lewis voucher and that will really help them get set up for baby.

Thanks all. Will discuss it with my sibling to see what they need.

Just wanted to say what a kind and thoughtful sibling you are

IMO it's not appropriate to do this until the baby is safely here.

GridlockonMain · 29/11/2024 14:00

Sounds very kind and lovely.

I would ask what they want (if it's something big/functional like moses basket etc) and buy that.

IMO it's not appropriate to do this until the baby is safely here.

By that logic one shouldn't buy anything to prepare for the baby before it's here. Is it appropriate to buy a car seat, baby clothes or nappies before it's born? 🙄
