I can't believe people don't know that?

Does anyone else get annoyed when people ask this? To me, It's sounds so smug and ignorant at the same time.

Now I understand Google is free and that we have answers to all things at our fingertips, but you would need to have starting point first. You can't just tap on your device Google, fill in the gaps in my knowledge or tell me all the things I don't know, about the history of everything.

We can't know everything and this is so different from those who don't want to know stuff.
Like the guy I went on a date with last year - I made a throw away comment about us being typical Gen Xers and he asked me what tf is a Gen Xer and when I tried to explain he promptly stuck his tongue in my mouth 🤭 he didn't give a shit, obviously. Like I said, that's a bit different.

Jersey is along the same sarky vein

They're actually called the Channel Islands

DappledThings · 28/11/2024 19:42

also that they wouldn't stop at normal stop signs.
Was that in Canada or here? Hearses follow all the usual rules of the road including all signs and traffic lights here.

I hate to tell you this, but fish don't have fingers either. Grin

many many years ago I was at a chinese takeaway with a mate of mine. They asked "Are the lobster balls balls of lobster or is it a delicacy?" Among the gang at the time it became a running joke.

You have a knowledge gap (as do a lot of people on this thread) around the concept of educational inequalities/disparities, the contributing factors to that and the lasting impact it has, so maybe start learning about that.

Edited

You have an issue with making assumptions, it seems. So perhaps you should work on that.

I'm not a snob, but sometimes I am shocked at some peoples lack of knowledge. I wouldn't laughingly point it out though.

One younger girl I worked with arrived late because there was a traffic jam and 'they were all driving so slow?' They all turned off at the cemetery road. I had to explain to her what a procession was, and that she couldn't pass the slow cars out of respect, and also that they wouldn't stop at normal stop signs. She just hadn't experienced it before, so didn't know.

This is the same young woman who has a handbag with the Playboy logo all over it. I wonder if she knows what it signifies, or just thing they are cute bunnies? I haven't, and won't ask.

I'm Canadian, and have had the difference between Great Britain and the United Kingdom explained to me a few times, but I'm not sure I've got it right.

Was the funeral in Canada? Here in the Uk, funerals have to obey the same traffic rules as everyone else.

This is one of my most hated sayings!

There will be multiple things that that person knows that they don’t and so I never understand the smugness of it.

We all know different things and we don’t all have the same education experience.

ilovethericeandchcoolate · 28/11/2024 19:50

I don't get the smugness of it when people say that either.

My friend took her passport to drive over the Severn bridge to wales as she thought she needed it and she's a bloody vet! She is so damn smart yet didn't know she didn't need a passport

Nobody can know everything

Exactly this!

Some people will be smug or rude about someone not knowing something but then lack the comprehension to grasp why someone might not know these things.

It’s ironic that someone can look down their nose at someone for not knowing something, yet they’re going exactly the same thing.

When I taught rec/y1 we had a girl (5yrs) come to the school party wearing a very sparkly playboy bunny top.
Our HT who wasn't particularly known for standing up to parents, insisted that mum brought her a change of clothing. Mum was angry and when he explained what it represented, she said ' yeah, I know that! So what!!'

DappledThings · 28/11/2024 19:57

But that really is very basic knowledge. Not knowing that Wales is part of the UK and therefore you don't need your passport is really not reasonable.

Same as a few years ago when one of my friends had just returned from the Isle of Wight and another friend asked her "what side of the road do they drive on over there?"

Maybe so. But I only have your posts here to go by and your post came across as ignorant of the reasons for educational disparities. You claimed you were open to people pointing out a knowledge gap for you.

ilovethericeandchcoolate · 28/11/2024 20:07

@DappledThings

My friend is not from the UK. So to those who are from the Uk it possibly is basic knowledge but not too someone from another country

It is a lighthearted thread, not an in depth discussion on the education system.

Feel free to start your own, more serious one.

But she was living in the UK at the time?

EvilsElsasPetSnowman · 28/11/2024 20:19

Totally agree

You don’t know unless someone tells you or you have a reason to find out. There was a reality TV show recently where the man in a new couple didn’t know how to cook pasta. Think he was about 30. And his partner was really shitty about it. “How could you not know how to cook pasta”. Probably because he doesn’t ever make pasta Hmm

Its 99.9% of the time wankers who just RELISH the opportunity to belittle anyway and tell themselves they’re intelligent

malmi · 28/11/2024 20:48

I can understand someone not knowing whether to take a passport to visit other countries within the UK. We like to emphasise how they are countries in their own right so much, it's not unreasonable to think one might need to show ID of some sort to travel between them.

Charlize43 · 28/11/2024 20:51

Overheard a young teen girl on the bus giving her dad a complete dressing down (very loudly, very sanctimoniously, very drama queen-ish, like a lot of teens today) about not knowing who Zach King is - who according to her is 'one of the most famous people in the world!'.

I sat several seats behind thinking to myself, 'Who the f is Zach King?' Never heard of him!

ThisThreadCouldOutMe · 28/11/2024 20:52

So not knowing that you don't need a passport to visit Wales/Scotland because they are part of the UK = uneducated

Assuming that Wales,Scotland and England have the same education/law/health system as they ate all the UK = uneducated.

I can see why someone might know one of those facts and make assumptions about the other.

I saw an argument on threads recently about whether the UK is a country or not.

VexedofVirginiaWater · 28/11/2024 20:58

It's actually amazing how much I don't know and I'm nearly 70 - according to my SIL. She asks how I can possibly not know ... whatever, and I just tell her it must be because I'm very, very stupid.

There are some very basic things that do shock me when people don’t know it. When the world wars ended, who our prime minister currently is never mind who has been PM historically.

I have very broad general knowledge but enjoy learning pretty much anything new, so always open to someone introducing a knowledge gap to me!

To be fair, in recent years keeping track of the current PM was a full-time job!
God forbid anyone had a dementia test during that time

Tortielady · 28/11/2024 21:06

It's not unreasonable to be annoyed by this snotty attitude. It's also not unreasonable to acknowledge when you might have fallen into it yourself; when you know a lot about something, or a particular fact appears to be general knowledge it's a very easy thing to do; how can people not know that there were three Bronte sisters (there were actually more, but only three published) or that England won the World Cup in 1966 and that Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland? As a PP said, some people flourish their lack of knowledge as if it's something to be proud of. Here too, I'm guilty. I'm not sorry I don't know more "water-cooler" stuff, and that I can converse more readily about the impact of the phone and wireless on early twentieth century Britain (they form part of my PhD) than who's doing well on Strictly. But I accept that many people would find that very odd and alienating.

BobbyBiscuits · 28/11/2024 21:10

It's a way for someone to feel momentarily smart. There's various different ways of expressing it but a lot of people do get a minor thrill when they know something someone else doesn't. I always respond with, 'well no I don't, that's why I asked.' Or if I don't actually care what the answer is I just say 'well good job you're here then to enlighten me.' And roll my eyes. 🤣

Bit off topic but I was watching the 2024 tsunami documentary. And I was amazed that many people didn't seem to realize that the sea withdrawing dramatically was a sign of an impending tsunami. Apart from anything else it has been in so many films. But I guess when presented with the reality it must have been so shocking as to paralyse.

I think with the tsunami, they didn’t really have time to process what was happening before the wave hit. So your child notices the tide is going out and staying out, you wander over to have a look, and before you can really think “oh the water rushing out is a sign of an impending tsunami, best run to high ground”, the tsunami is already coming in, very fast, and you’ve been swept off your feet.

And it was a very big tsunami. Much bigger than even local people would have expected. You wouldn’t have much time at all to get to safety.
