To be shocked at the net migration figures currently being discussed

Feelingathomenow · 28/11/2024 11:06

Yesterday’s figures discussed by the Tories stated that since 2010 the net migration figures to the UK has equalled the size of the population of Wales. Today we were told the figures to June 2023 showed a net migration figure of nearly 1 million for that year, for the year to June 2024 this had reduced to a mere 3/4 of a million. The numbers coming in of the boats per year alone is equal to a large town. AIBU to think this has to stop. We need to immediately crack down on people allowed into this country- limit it to urgently needed highly skilled jobs and start offshore processing (or similar) of the people who are here illegally (basically like many other countries).

We just can’t cope with those numbers. - no wonder our infrastructure is collapsing, we have a housing crisis etc.

I want to hear from the government how they are going to tackle it. We have heard from the Tories now it is over to Starmer.

For the people who think this is fine, is there any limit where you’d think ‘this is too much’? If the UK population hits 100 million is that ok? Or do you think we’ll reach a level of population density that means the UK will be naturally less appealing anyway, so no official limits are needed?

Do not waste your time. They want open borders because apparently when they are open people won’t bother to come. Shows how far people have been brainwashed and manipulated to accept the large numbers of people coming here. Still screaming right wing when Labour is on the case too.

SharpOpalNewt · 28/11/2024 14:59

I wonder how long it will take for people to blame Labour.

Oh look, they are already.

The anti-immigration Tories were hilariously bad at controlling our borders.

Bullshit don’t start going down the far right rhetoric doing very well is because of lack of infrastructure the fact is other countries have a very high migration including Australia and they need it for employment and guess what the economy over there is booming. We could have the same if we had better infrastructure imagine having these people working building houses that we. Need

Well thanks for that nonsensical comment

Throwing the term 'far right' about in response to an economic debate is ignorant.

Soz.

Whose going to do all the shitty jobs that Brits think are beneath them?

Are you happy for the EU and everywhere else to limit the entry of sunshine seeking UK emmigrants. Oh wait, they are exp pats, not migrants, and they are Brits and good and white, so that's fine ...........

The EU already limits immigration from the UK, unless you qualify on lucrative grounds or qualify for a workers visa. Visitors are restricted to 9 days out of 180 so what point are you trying to make?

Username056 · 28/11/2024 15:00

Since about 1980 the Uk population has grown by about 8M. That figure probably doesn’t include asylum seekers and illegal immigrants. We are a small island and I don’t think our infrastructure, services can cope. That’s without the impact on the countryside. There are so many people that everything just feels busy all the time. We’ve all seen the popular beauty spots jammed with traffic in the Summer. It’s only going to get worse unless immigration is controlled to more realistic numbers that can be coped with.

Gwenhwyfar · 28/11/2024 15:00

SparklyCheapBracelet · 28/11/2024 14:57

But the illegal immigrants don’t want to work, they aren’t here to bring up families, they left all this behind, it’s mainly men here, for economic or political reasons we will find.

If you wanted to take over a country, what better way of doing it, than sending hundreds of thousand of young male troops in advance, for your enemy to feed and clothe.

What?
This is complete paranoia?

90 days, it's not quite that bad yet that it's only 9 days!

Thanks Brexit!

To be fair, she's talking about the NET migration figures.

And if we hadn't left the EU the level of net migration would be much lower because a lot of people would be living and working in European countries that now can't.

The problem is not migration. The problem is massive underfunding of services by the Tories for the last 14 years.

Have a read of this excellent dissection of Kemi Badenoch's speech on migration and why she's wrong. https://open.substack.com/pub/iratusursus/p/kemi-badenoch-political-amnesia-immigration-failures

I get that everyone is upset about the shocking state of the NHS (I have a two year wait for an ankle fusion and I was only put on the waiting last month after waiting 18 months to see the surgeon), the state of the roads, schools and the very high cost of living, mostly caused by companies desperate to get back the money they lost during Covid and the other price-gouging because they can.

The only way to ensure we have a better standard of living and higher wages is to welcome migrants. It takes 15 years to train an orthopaedic surgeon. The waiting lists won't come down if we have to wait for new doctors to be trained, we need already trained doctors to come and work here.

As for asylum seekers, if I were a woman in Afghanistan or Syria, say, I would most definitely be fleeing for my life. Britain doesn't take nearly as many immigrants as other countries like Germany do. If you're going to say migration is high then at least provide evidence to compare it to other countries.

Kemi Badenoch and the Art of Political Amnesia

Kemi Badenoch’s immigration “truth” is anything but, as she rewrites history to dodge responsibility for Conservative chaos.

You know, I do wonder if anyone has had the genius idea of seeing why so many people are risking life and limb to migrate to other countries by small boats in the first place?

Maybe if we stopped selling so many fucking bombs, propping up tyrants and not giving a fuck if any of our resources are reliant on slave labour to extract or farm them these people wouldn't feel the need to get out of fucking dodge....

So what if you process someone abroad, what are you going to do? Imprison them for migrating? Because they will just come back if you send them to another country that is just as economically or democratically fucked from the ones they are fleeing.

We need to solve these problems abroad first and take some responsibility for our part in creating them.

Spot on.

Maybe if high immigration figures weren't artificially suppressing wages, British people would be enticed to work a job that actually paid the bills?

As it is right now, if I was the underclass I would have no motivation to work. Low wages, media and politicians demonising you, watching as people who just arrived get given help, support and access to healthcare and housing that you could only dream of.

It probably doesn't even feel like 'their' country anymore. Why should they bother?

No it really isn’t. You have had somebody on this post just now put the greatest conspiracy theory that the far I have the white genocide theiry believing that they are coming over and they will replace the white people because apparently they want a war not to work. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whitegenocideconspiracytheory
The truth is under the conservatives they cut the border force which meant people are waiting years to be able to get visas to be able to work that is unsustainable. They do want to work. Talk to anybody you listen to on the radio they ring up they want to work this is bullshit rhetoric and quite frankly I’m sick of it.

Another far right crap their country fuck right off. I have got some great Pakistan women that are looking after me and other disabled people and old people in this country that I’ve specifically come over to work as carers actually under the conservative they made that harder because they made it that you have to make more money so now they can’t get people over here that can help because the sad truth is it difficult to get English people to work in care? I want somebody that gives a shit looking not somebody that has to be there

Probably a town-country difference.

Office cleaners in small towns are little old ladies, in big cities they're immigrants (in general).

Yes, it really is.

There may well be other posters, however we are not known to each other, this is a forum of strangers - so to tar everyone with the same brush of 'far right' because they do not agree - is ignorant. It is a very multifaceted issue

The answer to that is solidarity, trade unions and collective agreements.

It is multifaceted but it doesn’t help when people say a whole stereotype that apparently these illegals don’t want to work it’s not true maybe some don’t but that can be said about white people in this country as well. The point is we cannot stereotype a whole group of people

This again?
The UK was founded on migration. We need immigrants.

We need LEGAL immigrants! Not all these groups of men coming on boats illegally! There’s a hotel near me that’s now closed down and it’s sole purpose it to accommodate hundreds of illegal males! And they cause so much trouble to the locals

They aren’t illegal. They are asylum seekers waiting to be processed. when their application is considered, they will either be granted leave to remain or not.

Or abscond?

I mean myself and my husband immigrated to the UK for a while - we worked in highly skilled NHS jobs alongside lots of other migrants so facilitating a service where you don’t have enough British people trained to do these roles, we paid a significant amount of tax and didn’t get anything back for it. We have since left but I think the UK did pretty well out of us tbh!
