My dh has been on the toilet with severe tenesmus since early yesterday morning, he literally goes and nothing but water comes out (not much at that).
He's been unable to sleep and in severe discomfort and miserable as he literally goes then feels like he needs to go again but constantly.
He hasn't got a temperature or bloody movements, or really any cramping so it doesn't seem like a bug.
I think he should go to A&e as I don't think this is normal, it's not gotten any better despite taking cocodamol and loperimide, he is totally miserable and exhausted.
Is this unreasonable? To be honest I don't even care if you think I am just desperately looking for advice! Sad

He needs to call the GP as soon as it opens. If they think he needs to go to A&E they will advise him to do so, but given GP surgeries open in a couple of hours best bet is to ask for an emergency appt

Hoglet70 · 28/11/2024 06:01

If he has overflow diarrhoea then cocodamol and Imodium will make him more constipated?? Isn't Tenesmus the feeling of not being finished?

rubyslippers · 28/11/2024 06:02

If this is a recognised condition with meds does he have a plan if this happens
I would be inclined to call 111 or speak to a GP rather than sit in a&e for hours but im not a doctor and don’t know if an acute episode like this needs emergency / immediate treatment

Zanatdy · 28/11/2024 06:02

when did he take the loperimide? I had a night on the toilet after taking that once.

Scarydinosaurs · 28/11/2024 06:03

Has he had this before? Cocodomol is for pain - but you said he isn’t in pain?

Tel12 · 28/11/2024 06:04

Phone 111 for advice

SensualMinx · 28/11/2024 06:06

What is tenesmums?

Lanzarotelady · 28/11/2024 06:07

Certainly not an A&E issue

Lanzarotelady · 28/11/2024 06:08

Had symptoms since yesterday, so 24 hours?

IceCreamCookies · 28/11/2024 06:09

He's been taking cocodamol because initially we thought it was because of diarrhea, he had some issues with diarrhea and urgency but nothing diagnosed. Also he's so sore to try and numb the feeling to help him sleep.
We've never used loperimide before just heard it can help with ibs symptoms.

I'm more concerned about dehydration but don't know when you'd go to a and e for that.
Also like I said it's not gotten any better just seems to have gotten worse.. I don't think he could even leave the house as he literally can't go more than 2 minutes but like I said not much is coming out.

Sorry to hear he is in so much discomfort.

I would suggest either ringing the GP as soon as they are open or ringing 111 now.

He does need to see someone but GP or someone through 111 is probably best.

In the meantime, make sure he is drinking plenty of fluids.

A&E is probably not the right place and he will be waiting hours which will be grim if he is in such discomfort and needing to use the toilet so frequently.

supercalifragilistic123 · 28/11/2024 06:14

Are you sure he's not severely conspitatated? Diarrhoea can be one of the symptoms of bad constipation.

If I couldn't stay off the toilet A & E is the last place I'd want to be. I'd try the GP first.

BlueMum16 · 28/11/2024 06:15

Ring 111. That's why they are there. They'll advise whether to wait for GP, go to A&E or will arrange a prescription

Cavello · 28/11/2024 06:15

Call 111 and they can advise. Sorry he is in discomfort.

IceCreamCookies · 28/11/2024 06:23

Thanks we will try 111, he will definitely need some investigations after this as it's so bizarre.. Says he feels like a burning pain so I'm wondering if it's an ulcer.

What is tenesmums?

Google not working for you?

HelloCheekyCat · 28/11/2024 06:29

You can go through the 111 triage online rather than calling, we found that much quicker

TheLurpackYears · 28/11/2024 06:34

No more drugs that constapate (Loperiminde can also ulter how the body absorbs orher drugs, it's popular with chaotic street drug users) and ring 111 now. NHS Walk in centre or urgently GP appointment if you can get one.

MuchuseasaChocolateTeapot · 28/11/2024 06:34

Could he have some sort of blockage? If he’s straining and in so much pain but nothing coming out could he be severely impacted? Hopefully 111 will guide you?

IceCreamCookies · 28/11/2024 06:55

Hi all thank you so much, we've stopped the loperimide as it doesn't seem to be doing anything and worried about causing a blockage.
We've called 111 and are now waiting for a call back from a GP so hopefully they can give him something to relax his bowel and maybe refer for some testing.
Honestly when you see your partner in so much discomfort and feel helpless it's absolutely rubbish. I hope they can sort something for him. x

Yes, tenesmus is feeling like you need to go even if your bowel is empty.
