Damaged wrist

Flute56 · 26/11/2024 19:19

Two days ago I bashed my left hand on a swing door when I was opening it and it didn't hurt but a few hours later it was very painful and I couldn't lift anything with that hand so I saw the rest was broken so I went to get an X-ray and the x-ray said nothing broken but just badly sprained. My wrist and hand was putting a splint and I was told to just go home and see my GP if I needed further advice. 1 end of the wrist is extremely painful so I was convinced that there was a hairline fracture but the doctor said nothing showed up on the x-ray but it is still extremely painful when any pressure is put to it so I'm going to my GP to ask for a further examination and I would like to know what the x-ray said if there's any tendon damage or anything like that and the reason why it is more painful at one end of the wrist and the other and also this Hospital doctor said to me it will be better within seven to ten days and I don't think she should say that because how does she know people get better at their own rates. I spoke to a friend of mine he used to working a hospital and she said are you sure that doctor was an orthopaedic doctor because sometimes when their short of staff they get another Doctor Who isn't and orthopaedic doctor just to cover I said I want someone to explain what they saw on the x-ray not just fog me off with oh it's not a fracture because I don't know if I've got tendon damage or what she didn't say and I'm on very strong the painkillers which masks the pain which means I can use the hand but because I'm using the hand with the stronger painkillers once they wear off my wrist will be twice as painful because I've been using it and putting stress to whatever is wrong with it so I'm going to get a second opinion because this doctor at the hospital said to me what job do you do and I said I work with computers can I type oh yes she said you can type what I can't type no way it's going to put stress on the finger stress on the the wrists and everything that don't think she should have said that

When to see the GP and she said it will take another six days at least to recover and that's why I'm still in pain and I probably have some tendon damage and she said do not take the splint off and because I can move my fingers I told her I think I will be back working on Monday but I won't be traveling to the office because it's not ideal because I need two good hands one to carry my laptop and one to maneuver myself on and off public transport so I will be working from home until my wrist is fully better

I have not taking painkillers anymore because the wrist only really hurts when I put pressure on it or try and pick up something too heavy for the wrist which the doctor said I must not do but because I've got an injured wrist it's making me quite tired and so I'm spending a lot of time sleeping

Or you could put the laptop in a cross body bag or rucksack and eliminate carrying it in the hand completely.

And you should take ibuprofen to assist with the swelling inside the injury.

Looks like you're trying to find any excuse not to go to work.

TwinklyAmberOrca · 28/11/2024 20:42

Do people really make such a big deal over a sprained wrist?!?!?

I mean FFS it's a wrist sprain. Put the laptop in a backpack and get on with your life!

After damaging the tendon in my ankle I didn't miss a single day of work and I'm a teacher and on my feet all day! I just hopped and kept my weight of it or walked slowly!

Show some resilience!

You have no right to accuse me of making excuses I can work from home for your information I have a colleague Who has been working from home for three months I have no idea what her situation is but she isn't coming into the office

Let me also say that I had a wash and blow dry at the hairdressers because with a sprained wrist I cannot wash and blow dry my own hair and I bet some people on here would have something negative to say about that and as far as my job is concerned when I told them that I wanted to work from the home because of the situation with traveling and carrying a laptop they were fine about it they did not turn round and see have you tried putting your lap in her backpack over your back so you've got two hands Jesus bully I'm glad I don't work for any of you loved because if I had any of you as my boss I would be looking for another job because I've had buses with your attitude in the past and I haven't stayed I've left and looked for another job because life is too short to work for a bully

You are making a huge fuss over a sprained wrist! I showered and washed my own hair with a fractured elbow, I was careful and it took me longer but I managed. I couldn't lift anything heavier than a cup of tea for 8 weeks (fracture clinic instructions) so I had to find other ways of doing things! And as for travelling I flew 2 weeks after my accident, I travelled alone with a rucksack and yes it was inconvenient and a bit awkward but I managed. You do you though!

Iwontlethtesungodownonme · 29/11/2024 09:09

I have broken both wrists on separate occasions and both times I was still mostly able to go about my daily life. Ok my hair didn’t look as good as usual but I washed and dried it myself and turned up to work.

This feels like a slight overreaction. It was only a few days ago op. If it’s still hurting after another week or so, or if the pain gets worse seek further help.

Flute56 · 29/11/2024 09:45

What do you have to realise is everybody has different ways of doing things and if I want to get my hair washed at her hairdressers that should be respected you should not criticize me and say well I had this injury and I coped and I did my own hair you should respect my decision after all I am the one that's paying for the hairdresser to do my hair with my money and it's my choice what I do with my money how dare you

You are not my employer and my employer was more than happy to go along with it they gave me three months off no questions asked and they said to me if your GP won't allow you to come back until three months time then that's fine

strained/pulled ligaments are extremely painful.
Why so determined to make this into something bigger - clearly, you have been Googling 'missed fracture' to find some stick to beat the hospital with.
And who the hell do you work for @Flute56 ? They appear to have a very generous sick policy for a monir injury

I am not talking about complaining that my wrist is Spain's I am merely talking about the people on here who criticize and say I coped I did this I did that with this injury or that injury well bully for you lot I do not want to do the same as you if I don't want to carry a laptop bag to the office and the office are quite happy with what I want to do which is work for home then that is my decision and the decision of my employers the same with washing hair that is bullying behavior because you all seem to think that I should find different ways of doing tasks like carrying a different type of bag for your laptop or still being able to wash your hair at home know that is what I mean by being a bully things I choose to do should be respected my office employers are more than happy to have me work from home and if you don't believe me I can show you the email

I wasn’t trying to bully anyone. I was merely saying these things can be managed. You seem to be in a state of panic over it.

CherryogDog · 29/11/2024 10:05

@Flute56
I fell and injured my wrist 5 years ago. Went to A&E, was told soft tissue damage.
Got a phone call the next day to say it was a scaphoid fracture, had a cast put on.
To cut a long story short, after 2 1/2 years of severe pain, loss of function, physio, different straps, steroid injections I got referred to a hand specialist who said the tendon had snapped.
I had it plated, and it was good as new, but unfortunately I fell again after 8 months and the plate broke.
There wasn't enough bone to replate, so I had a sling stitch put in, sort of a string holding my thumb in place.
This never really fixed the problem as it was touching a nerve. After a year it was taken out, there's scar tissue and some calcification holding things together, but I have quite limited use, moderate pain and the scar on the base of my thumb feels like a new raw cut.
I really hope you don't go through what I did, but I wanted to say that things that may seem simple don't always turn out that way.

Firestorms · 29/11/2024 10:09

I fell over in March, no fracture was shown on x-ray but I saw an orthopaedic surgeon. I was referred for an MRI to assess for an occult scaphoid fracture. I only had that last month and still don’t have any results. The services don’t move quickly.

The only thing I really couldn’t manage was carrying shopping with that arm for a few weeks.
