I'm absolutely mortified

Not an aibu but need reassurance that I'm not a terribly horrible person. So backstory On a city break for the Christmas markets and was saying to my mam when we arrived that I was expecting performer's and alot more street entertainment but there's none.

This morning I popped down the main shopping strip and in the distance I heard christmas music and a guy randomly singing Christmas songs but the words were all wrong and he couldn't sing so I started to take a video to send to my mum with the caption "well I did complain there was no Christmas music" but as I got closer I realised he potentially had special needs from a distance it wasn't obvious I straight away deleted the video but I feel awful that I videod someone with special needs like that. I honestly thought it was a young lad chancing his arm for a few bob

I am absolutely mortified but genuinely didn't know he had a disability

I find it amazing that the internet has brainwashed people into feeling guilty about the most ridiculous things.

TiredHippo · 26/11/2024 11:57

Maybe you should just not go around filming random people to make fun of then 💁‍♀️

LadyKenya · 26/11/2024 11:58

It sounds like you would have been happy to have a laugh at the guy's expense, if he had not had a disability though. Why is that ok with you?

InformerYaNoSayDaddyMeSnowMeIGoBlameALickyBoom · 26/11/2024 11:59

You were filming to take the piss out of someone.

Regardless of their needs it's a shitty thing to do.

Not sure what you want out of this thread though?

Chamomileteaplease · 26/11/2024 11:59

Non-issue. Get on with your day.

This exactly

Strange answer. I can't see many people think it's OK to film special needs people to mock them.

The fact that the OP recognised this and feels awful that they did it is a reaction I'd expect from most people that had accidentally done the same

DoraGray · 26/11/2024 12:01

You are an amazing person for feeling mortified. Well done.

ObtuseMoose · 26/11/2024 12:02

Do you want everyone to tell you that you're an amazing person even though you intended to rip the piss out of someone by filming them? Hmmm...

UpUpUpU · 26/11/2024 12:04

Have to agree OP. Taking a video to take the piss isn’t exactly a nice thing to do is it? But why would it have been OK for you if there were no additional needs but it was mortifying as they did?

AlohaRose · 26/11/2024 12:08

OP, I'm genuinely not sure why you would start a thread like this? Why on earth do you think a bunch of strangers on the internet would give you the reassurance you want? If you want to be told you are not a terrible person, speak to your mum!

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 26/11/2024 12:08

God I hate this shit, why does that matter. You filmed someone to take the piss out of them. Disability or otherwise, you were v unpleasant

Wendysfriend · 26/11/2024 12:10

I hope everyone clapped

Marblesbackagain · 26/11/2024 12:14

Well you should be mortified. And what would you feel like if you had postes and the person had an invisible disability.

Your approach was from a place of meanness and nastiness, that doesn't exactly show you as a decent person. I would suggest you throw the lens on yourself it sounds like you could do with a bit of reflection.

h733 · 26/11/2024 12:17

Woman takes a quick video to share with her mother to bemoan the lack of decent attractions in a lighthearted way.

Posts to mumsnet and makes a complete song and dance about it.

Gets told she's mean and nasty by spiteful, over the top people who haven't got anything better to do.

Wishimaywishimight · 26/11/2024 12:20

I would have just thought "oops" and deleted it, no further thought given.

It's not like you posted it on social media laughing at the chap.

Just forget about it. Hardly worth being "mortified"!

Does not sound like the OP had anything better to do either than film someone trying to make a bit of money, so she could have a laugh at him. How sad.

Taking videos of strangers so you can send them to your friends and laugh at them together isn’t ok. It’s the kind of thing we tell children not to do and expect adults to know not to do.

Exactly.

Hardly the best thing to do, but hardly the worst

Bumpitybumper · 26/11/2024 12:28

People on Mumsnet are so sanctimonious!

OP really hasn't done anything wrong. The singing was dreadful so she was going to send the video to her mum for a laugh. She didn't plan to upload it on the internet or mock him to his face. If the man hadn't had disabilities then he would have been none the wiser and to be honest, if you put yourself out there to perform in public then you have to expect that people will comment on your performance.

OP realises that the man has disabilities so doesn't send the video. Of course this changes things in the same way that we all sit through children's questionable performances each year and clap politely whereas nobody would humour adults in the same way. Allowances are made for the vulnerable and that's how it should be! That doesn't mean that every Tom, Dick and Harry should be tolerated if they are basically pumping out noise pollution through a microphone in a public place. I say this as someone that enjoys singing, has no talent and understands that this would be unpleasant for other people if I were to do this.

Dollshousedolly · 26/11/2024 12:28

Special needs or not, you were nasty to video this guy just to jeer at his poor singing. You are right to be mortified.

Unfortunately, this happens all the time now - people filming others to have a laugh and send on a video to their friends of some random person who was videoed unawares.

Thelnebriati · 26/11/2024 12:31

Maybe you've had a lightbulb moment and realised its not kind to take the piss out of people?

Birdscratch · 26/11/2024 12:34

People on Mumsnet are so sanctimonious!

Because they call out arsehole behaviour? Or because people who do shitty things like to assume that everyone does shitty things and people who say they don’t are just lying to look superior?

TiredHippo · 26/11/2024 12:41

@Bumpitybumper aaahhhh, right, gotcha, so because she didn't plan on mocking him to his face, it's totally OK to film him and make fun of him behind his back, right'o

He would have been completely unaware, so basically didn't affect him in anyway at all.

I hope everyone on here is whiter than white and basically only ever laugh at bland Knock Knock jokes
