Jeremy Clarkson is damaging farmers

Pippyls67 · 26/11/2024 11:17

He should butt out of the inheritance tax debacle. As Victoria Derbyshire reminded him during the London protests, he admitted in news print, when he bought his farm it was to dodge inheritance tax. Now he’s jumping in the back of farmers who probably won’t in actual fact pay very much ( smaller farms than his) for his own mercenary agenda. Farmers need to distance themselves from him and ban him from public events. He’s muddying their message and making them look bad by association. Ps I understand farmers need their farms intact to pass on but tbh we all need to pass on our wealth. I run a business and it’ll be screwed by inheritance tax to some extent. I don’t like it but you have to get on with it. That’s just the way of things isn’t it. Gotta pay for the NHS, schools and essential services from somewhere. Farms will need to sell assets I get it. Yes the largest farms will shrink in size but you just have to diversify to make up the difference if you want the same level of income. That’s what we do in business. Also it will make (potentially) land available for incomers to the industry. Lack of new blood and chances to enter farming have been an issue for many years. This is partly a consequence of even the largest farms being ‘handed down’ intact.

I know that my job is at risk now because of labours NI hike. So yes my economy has turned to shit (along with everyone else I work with

Well you obviously don't know the damage done previously which necessitated the hike, nor the consequences of not doing it.

And if my job and the others I work with don’t get enough work then the government UC bill is going to go up more than any extra they are expecting to get from our employer.
And the spiral begins

Usual scaremongering protest whenever business is asked to chip in more.

@bombastix so much for the NFU and farmers rally not having any chance of having an impact with government.

Have the NFU got a single concession out of this government that changes the policy? I think not, and the press says that too about this meeting. Instead there is remark about having a grown up meeting from Number 10. I think that goes to my point - farmers panto with Clarkson won’t help the NFU.

notanothernamechange24 · 26/11/2024 19:39

@bombastix well judging that the meeting is ongoing I wouldn't be so sure

If you're talking to me, no I don't like him. I think he's a colossal wanker. I don't like obnoxious, racist, aggressive, entitled people. Multi millionaires who don't want to pay tax are a scourge on society.

I think Farage is also a colossal wanker. Perhaps more so that Clarkson because he was elected to one of the most deprived areas in the UK and hasn't been doing his job. Now he's marching because he doesn't want to pay tax - probably the first time his constituents knew where he was.

They are a pair of colossal wankers.

It was more to the op

the point I was making that you have missed is what does it matter what you think of JC listen to what the farmers are saying

if people can’t get beyond that JC or NF (as you mentioned him) are supporting the farmers then that says more about how they engage in any political issue

Papyrophile · 26/11/2024 21:20

All I can say here is that our tiny SME will not be offering ANY new jobs in the forseable future. Way too many risks amd we won't compromise our base business. Good luck all.

Some of us can assess a situation without listening to a couple of tax shirking millionaires who are primarily looking after their own interests.

After leading farmers to vote Brexit like lemmings, it says a lot that they're willing to tolerate him.

I’m not the poster you quoted, but I call him a wanker (and worse) because he is one. He’s a racist bully and a massive big head too.
How is any of that related to age or colour? And how can he be old and middle aged at the same time?

I’ve never heard him say anything racist. And resorting to insults based on someone’s looks is just childish and pathetic.

MrsPeregrine · 26/11/2024 23:20

Alphaalga · 26/11/2024 15:00

Clarkson, like most if not all farmers, is a tory-voting ignoramus happy to put his hand up for policies which put more money in his pocket by decimating the long-term economy, ignoring climate-change and pinning the blame on those with next to nothing and the labour party.

Endorsement from such a twit would look like the kiss of death to anyone with any decency or self-respect.

And how exactly is Rachel Reeve’s budget beneficial to the economy? Most of us are going to be worse off and have less money. The same for most small to medium sized businesses. Hardly a recipe for growth is it?

The budget is a response to 14 years worth of mismanagement. You can’t turn an oil tanker around on a sixpence.

And Clarkson is a liability to farmers.

You don't seem to know much much about him. He was sued for racial discrimination and has been pulled up several times for racist language.

No he's public face who's raised the profile of farmers and the problems they face massively. He is using the farm that way, has never denied that, but has repeatedly pointed out over the last 4 years that he is very lucky to have other income and that many farmers do not

He did try and deny that? At the protest when Victoria Derbyshire pulled him up on it (and he clearly didn’t like it)

Have you forgotten already about the black hole in the country's finances left by the last lot?

Didn't take long did it? No wonder people still believe the papers and keep voting tory trash back in, to asset-strip the country's resources and pander to their core voters. How do you think we ended up in this mess?

Economic growth is a nuanced process that involves investment in society as a whole, not simply pandering to businesses driven solely by profit that don't care about general decline as long as things are good for them.

Embarrassed for you…..

Thelnebriati · 27/11/2024 10:23

Inheritance tax on farms forcing farmers to sell land to multinational corporations is the very essence of asset stripping.

Willyoujustbequiet · 27/11/2024 10:30

Yanbu OP. He's a complete hypocrite and tbh so are some 'farmers' This will only affect most weathly farms and half of those have been bought as a tax dodge anyway.

They need to pay like the rest of us.

If it isn't really farmers who will have to pay this tax, why not just have a clear definition of what a farmer is, and tax the non farmers?

He really didn’t like what Victoria was saying. She spoke the truth, he was found out and then tried to turn it on the BBC.

He thinks we were all born yesterday.

Instead of just admitting the truth, he lies and tries to get out if it..,..

He’s an embarrassment

BakeryCost · 27/11/2024 10:58

Whilst I can’t stand Jeremy Clarkson, my husband watches all his shows. As a city-dweller, I feel like I did learn something from his farm programme. It looked deeply unglamorous and hard work.

I have been an NHS hospital consultant for 31 years. Apart from my first year of house jobs when I was doing 56 hour shifts and was really quite traumatised by the level of responsibility I had aged 23 and the lack of support, I would not swap my working life for that of a farmer. Being a farmer looks such hard work, exhausting and cold. I hate being cold.

I don’t really understand enough about finances to make a comment about whether this is fair or not. But I really would like farmers to be able to continue to produce the food I eat, and not taken over by big companies. I don’t know if that is on the cards.

He was disciplined by the BBC for racist comments on camera in TopGear. He’s racist.
I didn’t insult him based on his looks - try reading again. I said it specifically wasn’t because of his looks, after someone else suggested people might not like him for them.

MrsSkylerWhite · 27/11/2024 11:43

derxa

I don’t know anyone like that round here

Well, I do 🤷‍♀️

We could all trade anecdotes. Point is, most farmers won’t be liable.

I suppose that may be an option but regardless I still think the wealthiest farms should be liable.

Even then they will only have to pay half what the rest of us may, only 20%. Fairs fair.

What of it? You know some wealthy farmers. Most are not.

It’s a cliche on here. The working class girl who now earns a ‘six figure salary’. Are you sniffy about her and her wealth.

Her children won't be exempted from IHT.
