Employers attitude.

An employer contacted me earlier this week.

They'd seen my CV on some website (I'd forgotten it was there, I'd been on that website a long time ago).

They sent me an email asking me to do an online interview for a position.

The positon seemed good. I decided to do the interview.

The onlie interviewer was so rude. After grilling me about different things for a while.

He said

"Why did you apply for this job". I said

"I didn't. Are you aware that the company contacted me and asked me to interview"

He then said "why should we hire you over all the over people that applied for this job"

. I again said "the company contacted me to do the interview for a start. Then I did answer the question and I listed my "qualities".

He was so rude. And I couldn't understand why he kept saying "why did you apply for this job" aggressively, when the company had sent me an email asking me to interview.

Why ask someone to do an interview and then be rude to them? I felt upset afterwards.

Weird experience

His wording and tone sound like they were out of line and you probably wouldn't want to work for them based on that alone but I'm voting for you being unreasonable because your response tells me you objected to being asked the question at all. It was completely valid for them to do that.

The recruiter asked you to apply, presumably because they thought your CV was interesting but they didn't offer you a job outright. You chose to proceed, indicating you'd be interested in the job. It's not unreasonable for an interviewer to ask what attracts you to the role and/or why you'd want to work for the company. No, you didn't technically apply, you were invited to but your response was pedantic.

Notsuchafattynow · 22/11/2024 12:24

I don't think you've got the job.

No they didn't ask me to even apply.

They found my online CV on a website, and they asked me to do an online interview straight away.

And the online interview was at extremely short notice.

They sent me an email asking me to do an online interview. And the online interview was the very next day.

I took time out of my current job to do the interview.

It's the way he asked me. He was really rude.

They approached me. They gave me extremely short notice for an online interview.

They gave me one day's notice for the interview.

Then when I did the interview, he was rude to me.

What was the point?

If that conversation is verbatim then you were a bit abrupt. Did you want the job, if offered?

I would have said that fortunately, my resume was spotted by an agency and when they contacted me, I realised it was an excellent opportunity etc etc so did not actually apply

I don't like jobs that give you one days notice for an interview for a start.

It shows lack of consideration.

No, after his manner and rudeness, I don't want to work for them

Some interviewers think it's character building or a test under pressure to be rude 🙄

pinotgrigeeeeo · 22/11/2024 12:28

Some interviewers seem to just have that style. I think it's a style that's dying out though.

The interview the next day is odd.

What kind of job is it? And at what level?

ByHardyRubyEagle · 22/11/2024 12:29

You have your answer OP, not the right job for you! It’s funny that the interviewer asked you why you’d applied though lol. Did you think you had been head hunted? Was it a high paying professional job or a lower paying job?

Yes!

I feel like an interview goes both ways. If he is rude to me, I don't want to work for them.

If they speak to me in a professional and nice manner , I would want to work for them

Language aside, if someone asks you to interview for a position and you agree, you are essentially agreeing to apply. You're telling them that you'd like to be considered whether the word apply is used.

I get that the person came across like a dick but I can't judge tone, I can only judge the words. If you're response was based on his demeanor rather than the question itself then fair enough. If it was me, I'd have just called it out and said I'd prefer not to continue with the interview because you I didn't feel like their attitude would make for a productive working environment. I wouldn't have doubled down on the issue with the follow-up.

I have noticed that with some companies these days. A couple of years ago, employers used to give us a weeks notice.

I've noticed that recently some employers give extremely short notice for interviews.

Maybe because more interviews are online these days? But they still don't seem to think, well that person will have to take an hour out of her work day at short notice.

You effectively were applying as soon as you agreed to the online interview.

Why did you agree? If you didn't want the post you've wasted your own time. The question seems valid based on the fact you turned up to interview

DoYouReally · 22/11/2024 12:34

I think something got lost in translation.

They invited you for. You could have said yes or no. By saying yes, you applied for the job.

I think the response he was looking for was along the lines of 'after x contacted me and advised that the role include x & y, I thought it was a great opportunity to built of my current skills set. My experience with Z allows be to build on....

Even if his tone was poor, it was a valid question.

rwalker · 22/11/2024 12:34

I don’t think your answers or attitude were the best

to me you were contacted to see if you were interested and followed it up as I would see that as you did apply

tbh I think the interview would of gone downhill from there as you would come across of having a poor attitude
they probably wanted to end the interview after your first answer but just went through the motions

Oh I see now you edited paying to applying.

Well I got approached by an employer once before online.

And when I agreed to do an interview they said "thanks for agreeing to do an interview. Then they asked me about my experiemce".

This time, this guy was hostile and rude from the start. That's why near the end I said to him "are you aware the company asked me to interview".

Oh well ill move on . It was just irritating

I don't need the job. I have a good job at the moment..
What annoys me is when he contacted me, the initial email was very nicely worded, it said:

"Wed love you to interview. You look like such a great candidate for this position. Your CV is what we want. Will you please do an online interview tomorrow".

Then when I agreed to it, he was just extremely rude at interview.

I feel like they were just messing me around.

Not a company I want to work for

Was it actually the employer or an agency that contacted you. If it was an agency they may have fed some porkies to the employer about your interest in the position.

No, as I've already said I did answer his question.

It was when he was rude to me multiple times I said "you are aware that the company asked me to interview yes".

I don't have to take rude behaviour from anyone. It was a complete waste of my time.

This. They were normal interview questions. His attitude doesn't sound great but you were more or less refusing to answer so he was probably frustrated. I don't think either have you have come across that well.
