Just think of what the photographer would have said to instruct that pose. GRIM.

Yes, imagine if your young daughter was doing a modeling job for Tesco as well, and then it ended up being this.

Yep, that hasn't happened by accident. I think it's quite vile.

Totally agree.

PinoGrejioh · 22/11/2024 21:10

Yes it's off.

The pose in itself isn't but together with the other elements, it's suggestive with connotations and it's disgusting it got through edits.

Pippa246 · 23/11/2024 09:07

interesting that they’ve pulled the ad from Insta so I’m assuming there was some negative feedback. But sad to see nearly 40% on MN feel I was BU - it’s no wonder women and girls have to continue to push back so hard against everyday sexism and misogyny when fellow women are apologists for such behaviours.

Yes, I agree.
Eg
It's a child wearing full cover top and shorts. Oh dear, she has some leg exposed. Are we in 1800s? Would you feel the same if it was a boy?

Have any of us ever seen an ad featuring a boy in leather shorts posed like that, let alone with a leopard too and makeup? (Fine if an older teen boy chooses that sort of outfit, that's not the point.) Yes, I think if we actually did see a photo like that of a boy people would feel differently - sexualised images of boys are (rightly) still taboo, so why aren't they for girls?

They might not all be women to be fair.

CrispWinterSunshineBright · 23/11/2024 10:54

Yep off.

StormingNorman · 23/11/2024 11:03

I wonder how many of the 40% who think this picture is OK would let their daughters go out dressed like this. Or how many dads would balk at the thought! I would unashamedly judge if I saw a young girl dressed like this IRL.

I would like to not see anything provocative or sexual in an image of a child. Unfortunately, I couldn’t avoid the overtly sexual outfit and wanton pose. To pretend I don’t see the sexuality in this image because it is a child posing would be a disservice to young girls.

Take the exact same photo with an adult woman and 100% of MN would agree it’s designed to titillate.

It’s not even just the photo that’s the problem. The clothes! A sheer top serves no practical purpose. It is designed to show the breasts - it is meant to attract attention. I get that leopard is a big trend this year - but if the top was a woolly leopard jumper it would be a whole different aesthetic. How did the top even get designed and approved!

And who sees a child dressed like that and think “You know what, a red lip would make this look really cute and age appropriate for primary school girl”.

Guarantee very few MNers would wear this outfit, let alone let their pre-teen daughters.

Mumofteenandtween · 23/11/2024 11:07

It’s the combination of the pose , the make up, the output and the expression.

If she was wearing jogging bottoms and a hoodie then the rest would be fine.

If she was grinning whilst jumping on a trampoline then the clothes would be ok. (Although not something I would personally buy for a pre teen.)

But the combination is worrying.

It s off.
From the pose to the leather to the leopard print to the makeup.
She looks like she's 11, not even a teen yet.

Agree with this. Your instincts aren't off OP, it's them.

In the eye of the beholder?
Depends on the thought process of the viewer.

lollypopsforme · 23/11/2024 11:56

All i see is a child sitting on a floor wearing clothes for a add for tescos.
I dont understand what goes through somes minds to find offence says more about some peoples thoughts than others.

Miley1967 · 23/11/2024 11:59

I can see what you mean. I personally wouldn't dress my daughter in a fake leather look mini skirt or shorts ( can't really tell what they are ) and the pose is off. I wouldn't complain though as inappropriate clothing for kids is everywhere.

Depends on the thought process of the viewer.

To suggest those of us who have a problem with the image look at children in a sexual way is outrageous.

What I see is abuse. I have never seen images of CSA, but I imagine they are not a million miles from this. It is disturbing to me.

Your faux innocence and naivety is part of the problem. We need people to push back against this.

Sunnings · 23/11/2024 13:21

I agree with you OP.
It is sexualising a child.
Completely inappropriate.

What were Tesco thinking.🙄

Maybe if more people complained, especially about the most egregious examples, there'd be less of it about?
