Gremlins at 6

Dd was at a neighbour friends after school for an hour today and came home scared saying they’d watched some of The Gremlins film.
It actually came out when I was 6 and I think I must have watched it at 7/8, but can’t remember being scared.

Is 6 too young to watch Gremlins?

Yes. But there is a more children friendly cartoon. It was/ may still be on iPlayer.

There's a bit in it where they talk about how they discovered santa wasn't real. So if you do santa, then yes too young at 6 to watch gremlins
Though I was watching IT and child's play by 9 so definitely different times!

Common sense media is a good place to check. I've not seen it for years and don't think my recollection would be accurate.

I watched a bit of short circuit recently thinking of showing it to ds, that film is not suitable for young children, even though we all watched it in the eighties. Also the Asian character is not an Asian actor, it's a white guy in make up with an appalling accent. Like Apu from the Simpsons live action.....

Strange how none of it really bothered us that much…I was also watching IT and Poltergeist from around 9/10 maybe. I remember watching The Triffids around 6 maybe and being scared and freaking out about Children of the corn

I've a vague memory of googling age ratings of Gremlins when DD was about 11
Apparently, one of the criteria is if it is relateable to the child's experience, then it's classed as scarier /gets a higher age certificate / is way more likely to upset them.
So though 6 seems WAY to young, the age rating Gremlins was given (15!!) was because it was very "middle America high school" of the time, so hugely more likely to upset an American middle school aged kid in the 1980's. Probably feels like a different world today!

Nope. Not for a while yet (although it IS the best Xmas film).

Stick to Nativity for now.

My kids watched Indiana Jones recently and that was too much! And it's a PG 🤦🏻‍♀️

Scared the crap out of the kids I was babysitting, they were 6 and 7 (I was about 14, I think, at the time)

Spike and co are pretty scary to little kids. I mean, at one point they stuff somebody in a blender. Or possibly a cat.

That bit about the father dying in the chimney pretending to be Santa. I’m still scarred by that and I’m 45.

FeralWoman · 22/11/2024 00:56

My DD watched it at about that age. She loved it. Not scared at all. Then again she was also watching Jurassic Park movies at that age and laughing at the people being eaten by the dinosaurs. She loves scary movies and shows.

CorporaINobbyNobbs · 22/11/2024 00:58

But I would have been horrified by that at any age! Probably more so as an adult
