To be fair (& I realise he can't defend himself) Captain Sir Tom may have been aware of what she was doing and have his blessing.

YorkieIsDefinitelyForGirls · 21/11/2024 21:07

@Toomanywars I'm not talking about Hannah for the avoidance of doubt!!!!!

Gosh I'm sad to hear that. He's a lovely lad with such a terrible background.

Your're right. But he's still very young. And can't have ever given full consent to being in the public eye. I don't doubt that his adoptive parents deeply love and care for him, but the constant publicity?

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 21/11/2024 21:09

Does anyone understand why she isn't being taken to court over this?

Apparently doesn’t meet the threshold of criminal activity 🤷‍♀️

An example

"The estimated total pay range for a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at The Salvation Army is £477K–£515K per year, which includes base salary and additional pay. The average Chief Executive Officer (CEO) base salary at The Salvation Army is £501K per year.22 Oct 2024'

Seriously hie on earth the CEO of the Salvation Army thinks they deserve that, greedy bugger its suppose to be a charity...

Gosh, that's disappointing.

because she's white and middle class.

User135644 · 21/11/2024 21:38

Should be in prison, next to the Facebook posters.

The real two tier Sir Keir. He'll protect anyone in the establishment.

Grooveisintheheartbaby · 21/11/2024 21:40

My gut feeling at the time was the daughter was using her dad to get attention and make money. I didn't give any money as I just thought it felt off. Poor old guy was being used.

A CEO skill set is a CEO skill set.

Relatively few people hold the creds and capability to do it, so it commands a market price.

Yeah this is where we are all be conned though. Theses CEOs command huge salaries as we're led to believe they are so uniquely qualified. Under their watch many organisations fail, commit criminal offences etc etc and then these top individuals slide away with golden handshakes and big pension pots moving straight into another top position.

Er no, it's nothing to do with KS. It's white middle class privilege

No opportunity, however tenuous the link, missed to slip the knife in.

Arraminta · 21/11/2024 22:07

Why was he still being called 'Captain' Tom? It's my understanding that if your rank is anything below Major you're not allowed to use it once you have left the military? My father served in the forces for 12 years, but never tried to utilise his rank once he was out.

Or maybe you get to walk up and down a field all day long while listening to Michael Ball?

Pretty sure that's how the journey into Hell begins.

It's not the journey. You've already there, in Hell.

User135644 · 21/11/2024 22:12

Only thing more weird than the hysteria over Captain Tom - and the banging pots and pans for the NHS on Thursday night - was the mass mourning when he died. It was more hysterical than anything since Diana at the time.

Blinky21 · 21/11/2024 22:40

The whole thing was incredibly jarring from the start. The awful privilege he had to walk around the family estate while his poorer peers were perishing in old folks homes and the jingoistic obsession people had with it

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 21/11/2024 22:43

Really? That’s very surprising. An intention to defraud and actual fraud, but doesn’t meet the threshold? That drags the law into disrepute, on top.

dayswithaY · 21/11/2024 22:59

Feels like the wheels are coming off celebrity endorsed charity. Children in Need’s viewing figures slumped and people complained about Paddy and his kid’s bike being shoved in our faces.

Ed Sheeran and others have started a conversation about how patronising Band Aid is towards Africa.

Captain Tom was not what he seemed.

As others have said, rich celebs pestering ordinary folk to give up their hard earned cash to a charity feels wrong, Just shut up and donate privately like the wonderful George Michael did.

Yes it felt orchestrated from the start. A combination of the government, mainstream media and unscrupulous family members went into overdrive to promote Captain Tom as a national treasure. I really don't believe he was aware of the personal financial gain. It seemed to me he just did as his daughter instructed.

What I found quite extraordinary is lots of people seemed to think the money was going to the NHS, rather than NHS charities.

But when it comes to taxpayer funding for the actual NHS, lots of people are less keen to stump up.

murasaki · 21/11/2024 23:23

For someone who was allegedly good at PR, she's certainly shit at reputation management.

There were Captain Tom duvet covers and even mini skirts...

Off topic but I'm wondering what it must have cost in travel insurance to get a 100 year old to Barbados. That must have made a dent.

They are scumbags. Shameful and I hope they're held to account.
