HIGHLIGHTING DANGER OF WOODBURNERS

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) -
essentially tiny particles of soot - is one
of the most dangerous air pollutants.
Breathing it in is linked to lung cancer,
heart damage, strokes, impaired cognition
and mental health problems, and can
exacerbate conditions such as asthma,
COPD and pulmonary fibrosis. Children
and elderly people are most vulnerable

I HOPE YOU DON'T EAT BACON OP, THE WHO HAVE CLASSIFIED IT AS A GROUP 1 CARCINOGEN - KNOWN TO CAUSE CANCER.

Is all CAPS a thing now for highlighting DANGER!

The evidence is all there but there are those that will not listen. Fair enough but I warned of the dangers and the Mums for Lungs charity does great work for those who may want to campaign in their area

The evidence isn't "all there" though. What you have presented is a certain perspective. Statistically you can prove anything from a certain view point. Since we will all die one day, if we eat baked beans, then you could take the view that baked beans must be a killer.

Thelnebriati · 20/11/2024 23:10

Everything we do has an impact on the environment, we just try to make the best choices we can. Wood is a renewable resource, and it doesn't generate nuclear waste.

YourAzureEagle · 20/11/2024 23:11

GlassHouseBlue · 20/11/2024 22:51

You do that and increase your chance of lung cancer by 70%

I burn wood in an open fireplace that has been in use since the late 1600s with no ill effects that I know of.

You do know that at one time every house was heated by coal or wood fires, and that didn't lead to massive amounts of lung cancer cases.

Please don't shout from the rooftops if you are worried, because that puts you closer to the chimney pots.

No, all caps is just rude and shouty.

TwistedSisters · 20/11/2024 23:11

Fire has been used as method of heating homes for millennia. It's absolutely ridiculous to think that the pollution being produced from them is anywhere near the scale of pollution being produced from large factories or power stations.

Your problem is that nobody knows who you are and even fewer people care, since you're currently just another shouting loon on the internet with some strange ideas about your own importance to anyone reading, and precisely zero credibility.

Do you have an AIBU, or are you just having a bit of a late night froth for no particular reason?

weareallcats · 20/11/2024 23:12

Surely people have burned wood for heat for many, many more years than we have used gas central heating? Perhaps I am being naive, but I don’t see how it is suddenly so very dangerous and even with an increased population, there must be fewer fires burning now than there were 100 years ago (and they are contained within a stove, and most people use seasoned/kiln dried wood).

Givingmetalktalk · 20/11/2024 23:13

Threads like this honestly make me want to set up a woodburner in every room of my house, including the bathroom. I hate shouty, preachy crap like this.

And yes my granny had - GASP - open fires and lived to be 103, so stick that in your pipe and (drumroll)... smoke it.

TwistedSisters · 20/11/2024 23:13

Take a look at these articles OP.
Maybe your 'facts' aren't quite as factual as you think.

Or if you mum put baby powder on your bum you might as well book a direct cremation today, everything is now a carcinogen.

I purchased a spanner, which said on the packaging, this product contains a chemical (not sure what, it's a lump of steel!!) that can cause cancer in the state of California, phew, I live in Wiltshire, that's one risk swerved!

Daftasabroom · 20/11/2024 23:14

@GlassHouseBlue we have a wood burner but we live in the country and it is our primary source of heat. We have no mains gas.

But, wood burners are completely unnecessary and should be phased out anywhere that mains gas is available.

Please don't get me started on insulation, ASHPs etc.

KrisAkabusi · 20/11/2024 23:14

GlassHouseBlue · 20/11/2024 22:51

I just looked it up. In Europe the lifetime chance of a female non-smoker getting lung cancer is about 3.5 per million inhabitants. An increase of 70% on that is still a tiny number.

Hunglikeapolevaulter · 20/11/2024 23:14

We've used fire as a heat source since before we were even Homo Sapiens.

Summerhillsquare · 20/11/2024 23:15

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 20/11/2024 22:47

Tell it to the government then. Maybe they can give me a grant to improve insulation on my home.

I can't stand shouty demands.
I have a pile of wood and I will be burning it as does every other house here during the winter.

It's a leaflet, no one's shouting dear.

Yes, government will give you a grant to insulate your home quite likely. Or you could just pay for it yourself, seeing as it's your home.

Gas is due to be phased out though....

SabreIsMyFave · 20/11/2024 23:17

Are you OK @GlassHouseBlue ? Serious question. Confused

RegimentalSturgeon · 20/11/2024 23:17

Woodburners are the least of our worries. Have a fag and calm yourself, OP.

Elphame · 20/11/2024 23:17

Open coal fire here. No gas in the village

I don't eat bacon though and have never used talcum powder.

maroo · 20/11/2024 23:17

Appreciate it’s tough to hear for those who love a fire, but wood burning stoves have been shown to increase risk of lung cancer in women by 68%.

You are completely wrong. Wood smoke was a major killer and still is for people who still cook over open fires.

( It's much higher than you might imagine although work done over the last 20 years has reduced it significantly)
