What age would you say my child was

From this?

Please be honest.

My dc has been ill since June and unable to attend school, I’ve been doing some work with her at home, however, she’s too ill
most of the time and my main focus is on getting her better. Her educational development is niggling away at me a little now though. She reads well, is eloquent in her speaking and her maths seems good. Her writing to me seems lower than it should be, will she catch up when better?

I have never seen/known of an 8 year old writing like that. Definitely what I'd expect from a 5 year old, or even 4.

Most 4 year olds would not be able to spell that well for starters

Froginpot · 19/11/2024 21:43

Hoping your LO is much better soon. I think for 6 years old she is doing absolutely fine. My 6 year old writes pretty similarly so without looking at the posts.. I guessed 6 years old. Some of his peers write better and some not as well but looking at your original post.. I think you shouldn’t worry at all.
Also kids are taught differently these days I think so my personal experience is that I probably had much better hand writing at age 6 but 6 year olds I feel these days are much more articulate and seem more imaginative.

MumoftwoGranofone · 19/11/2024 21:44

This is so incredibly sweet of her. (All children are different but I’d guess about 6) x

girlofsandwich · 19/11/2024 21:44

That is so cute!

Therewerenosnowdaysinthenineties · 19/11/2024 21:47

@ShinyPebble32 My heart dropped when I read your post.
I’m the opposite of a pushy mum. I don’t care about her handwriting, but I have started to worry only recently in case she goes back and feels low in confidence in case she sees other children far ahead.
My only concern has been getting her well, regardless of the very stressful pressure from school, who seem to think she’s missing out on very important things (which also is part of me posting this) to check that it’s going to be ok.
All I see in my child’s list is love and it touched me very much, I most certainly didn’t look at it and focus on the handwriting.

When my daughter was in year 1 and in lockdown. The teacher told me it's really common for letters to be wrong way round. Hope your daughter is feeling better soon

Don't be so daft.

of course legible hand writing is important, but between now & GCSE (or whatever by the she gets to that age) she has plenty of time to develop nice handwriting.

I wouldn't say it's daft at all.

My son has terrible handwriting, I stopped bothering about it when I realised that since leaving education I basically never need to write by hand (as opposed to with a keyboard), it's simply a skill that's no longer really needed.

Even in education, they do more an more on Chromebooks and less and less on paper (which is good), I wouldn't bet against even exams being online by the time my child and the OP's are sitting them.

nappysan · 19/11/2024 21:48

Between 4 and 6

Sunnings · 19/11/2024 21:48

6 sounds right.
Within a year they can move forward.
My daughters friend at 8 wrote better than my 11 and 14 year old!
They are all different.
Legibility is what counts, especially for exams later on.

Thanks everyone, so she turned 6 in summer.
I’ve not worried until now, but obviously don't want her returning and being miles behind and feeling that, if that makes sense.
It was a list as it’s my birthday next week 🙂

So sweet of her to write a list for you 🥰 really sorry she’s been so unwell for so long ❤️
She sounds delightful and I would have guessed 5-6 had I got to the thread sooner.

MaryGreenhill · 19/11/2024 20:42

She will catch up please don't worry as long as she is well.
I am not going to say what age l think she is because that will feed until your anxiety. Bless you both.

This 🙏

Olympicscandal2024 · 19/11/2024 21:51

I'd have said y1 or y2, considering we're still in the first term of y2. I don't think she'll be much behind anyone, if at all if you could compare to the rest of her class. I hope she's better soon

Yousay55 · 19/11/2024 21:53

If she is reading well, I wouldn’t be concerned with her writing.
I’ve teaching this age group for over 20 years. She’ll get there and all that matters is she is well and happy. Quite a few children write like this who haven’t missed any school. Everyone learns at a different pace.
Do not worry.

I was going to guess 6-7

We received 25 plus birthday cards at my summer born sons birthday this year, (reception England age 4/5) and hardly any of them had neat handwriting, most will have been 5. Handwriting has become more of a focus in Y1, which is why I guessed 6-7! It looks fine to me

RuthW · 19/11/2024 21:55

5-6?

TakeMeDancing · 19/11/2024 21:56

4-5 years old

SwimmerDog · 19/11/2024 21:56

Hi @Therewerenosnowdaysinthenineties
school teacher here xx
most kids in my year three class have handwriting like this - it’s completely normal. One kid from a couple years ago had handwriting absolutely all over the place, and went to one of the leading private schools in the country for secondary - I’d have no concerns xx
wishing you all the best!

Sugargliderwombat · 19/11/2024 21:57

I was going to say 6 - remember lots of countries don't even start formal 'writing' until age 7, we just start crazily early here and it doesn't have a long term benefit.

Lindjam · 19/11/2024 21:58

Ex teacher.

I would say six, but don’t worry if she’s older than that, they really do all pick things up at different rates.

They also tend to plateau for months and you despair at the lack of progress, then over six weeks they come on in leaps and bounds in their learning and you can’t believe the speed of the change.

Please don’t stress. Far too much pressure is put on young children and their parents to meet subjective milestones.

ToysRus56 · 19/11/2024 21:59

@ShinyPebble32 your post is just so unkind and unnecessary. It's completely possible to both be utterly loving and adoring of your child as they are and anxious that they are falling behind. Talk about kicking a dog when it's down. Please think about the impact of your words the next time you respond to a post.

OP, im sorry things are tough. Caring for a sick child over a long length of time must be so difficult. It's completely understandable to worry that she may be falling behind, that doesn't make you a bad parent so please don't feel guilty about this, despite what these silly posters are saying. I don't have too much experience of this age group so can't comment on that, but judging by how you sound and the lovely letter your little girl wrote, she clearly has a wonderful mum xxx

pumpkinpillow · 19/11/2024 22:00

OP I think if instead of asking people to guess her age you'd said how old she was and then expressed your specific concerns you would have had kinder and maybe more helpful responses.

She is unwell. She will learn to write well in good time.

Will someone help her buy those gifts for you? Please let us know which Care Bear she chooses.

GoldCat255 · 19/11/2024 22:01

5

DodgyFriend · 19/11/2024 22:02

I hope you save that in a memory box! It captures a really sweet child using all the writing skills she has acquired to communicate how much she loves her Mum. Perfection! ❤️

Stickthatupyourdojo · 19/11/2024 22:04

Allnewtometoo · 19/11/2024 20:45

Ds2 is 7, year 3 and its this year his writing had improved. So I'd say 5/6. But that's not taking illness into account.

It's so variable though OP. It's a lovely list.

I echo this.

Scottishskifun · 19/11/2024 22:05

I would say 6 or 7.

We have the kiddo space books which are good for practice at home as it has some games as well as letters, shapes and numbers and vanishing ink so can be used and picked up any time. My son likes to do some letters practice then do some of the game pages.
