What age would you say my child was

From this?

Please be honest.

My dc has been ill since June and unable to attend school, I’ve been doing some work with her at home, however, she’s too ill
most of the time and my main focus is on getting her better. Her educational development is niggling away at me a little now though. She reads well, is eloquent in her speaking and her maths seems good. Her writing to me seems lower than it should be, will she catch up when better?

Approx 4 years old

Onlyvisiting · 19/11/2024 21:04

Oh and if it helps- I didn't learn to read until around 7 I believe. I distinctly remember opening a book I bought with my pocket money and being cross I couldn't read it.
By 11 I was running out of books, had read all dick Francis, reading terry pratchett etc.
So she really will catch up I'm sure!

Kneebonefuture · 19/11/2024 21:05

Probably 6 or 7. But you've said they've not been to school so could be anything. 10?

AnonAnom940 · 19/11/2024 21:06

@Therewerenosnowdaysinthenineties please ignore those that say age 4. Absolutely not. I can only assume they are all here as a wind up or have not actually got children

My four year old spring born nephew has just had his parents evening and his teacher said he was an ideal pupil and top of the class. He absolutely cannot write like this. He is still messily copying/tracing huge individual letters.

I thought about seven or eight.

I have never seen/known of an 8 year old writing like that. Definitely what I'd expect from a 5 year old, or even 4.

funinthesun19 · 19/11/2024 21:07

6 or 7

Thanks everyone, so she turned 6 in summer.
I’ve not worried until now, but obviously don't want her returning and being miles behind and feeling that, if that makes sense.
It was a list as it’s my birthday next week 🙂

She's not miles behind at all 😊 her handwriting is legible which is brilliant! If you want pointers for improving, lined paper and teach her proper letter formation but I really wouldn't worry until she's better

RosaBaby2 · 19/11/2024 21:07

I'd say year 2, very similar to my son and he's middle of the year.

Or they've got children who wrote like that at 4.

If the handwriting is the only concern, then in my opinion it doesn't matter.

Handwriting is a skill that just really isn't needed in the modern world.

TheGriffle · 19/11/2024 21:08

My dd was doing her J’s the wrong way round until Year 2 and her name begins with J. She’s a young 6, her writing is fine for her age, especially taking into account her sickness. I hope she’s on the mend.

StillAtTheRestaurant · 19/11/2024 21:03

4 or 5.

A four year old who can spell bear and care?

BarbaraHoward · 19/11/2024 21:10

Not miles behind at all compared to my 6yo and her friends, honestly. You're doing a great job.

I hope you have a wonderful birthday, and enjoy your lovely presents that she's picked for you. Smile

WarriorN · 19/11/2024 21:10

I was going to say y2 before I saw your update. I've taught y2, this is very normal

AnonAnom940 · 19/11/2024 21:10

@LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway 99% of 4 years old can't spell. They might be able to copy words to look like that. But it would not be an independently produced piece of work. I'm not salty, my child is exactly where she should be. I am just pointing out that it is an unrealistic expectation of the large majority despite what Mumsnet users are claiming. In these types of posts the age of the child is massively under estimated and totally unrealistic

Edited

Few changes of mind in terms of how bitchy to be there?

A four year old who can spell bear and care?

Not THAT unusual. Some children are more advanced than others.

Chan9eusername · 19/11/2024 21:12

End of reception/first half of year 1.

Cattery · 19/11/2024 21:12

Or can copy them off something. Not unusual. My Dc would have at 4 nearly 5.

FLOWER1982 · 19/11/2024 21:13

Year 1? Only because of how the a’s are formed and you say she’s been off since the summer. Of course she will catch up.

It is very unusual. Don’t be silly.
