Just that, why would you risk it? Our company has recently changed wfh policy to 4 days in the office, however as I don't want to take the risk of driving iv been wfh past couple of days and wondered if/why people are going in? Do they feel the need to look good and be present in the office?

OP posts:
QueSyrahSyrah · 19/11/2024 19:17

Because not everybody works in an office job that can be done from home??

Dreamsofcruise · 19/11/2024 19:17

What a snarky post! I work in healthcare so have no choice but to get in. The country would grind to a halt if everyone had your attitude.

Balloonhearts · 19/11/2024 19:19

Because some people have jobs that they actually have to be present for?

Thewholeplaceglitters · 19/11/2024 19:20

Can’t do my job from home. So I drive or even walk if necessary to make sure I’m there.

Boing98 · 19/11/2024 19:20

Bit hard to rescue someone from a car accident if working from home

Redlocks28 · 19/11/2024 19:20

Do they feel the need to look good and be present in the office?

No, but someone needs to teach my class of 30 children. Would you rather I just stayed at home instead?

RosieLeaf · 19/11/2024 19:21

Drive as normal. You know lots of places have snow in the winter? Ice is even less of an issue.

Beezknees · 19/11/2024 19:21

The roads are usually cleared of snow where I am, it's absolutely fine to travel in.

Frozenlucozade · 19/11/2024 19:21

Not everyone can work from home as hoc and even in my rural area the roads have been gritted so most workplaces would probably be quite confused at not going in

Idontjetwashthefucker · 19/11/2024 19:21

I drive, bit of snow and ice doesn't faze me

Ineedaholidayyyy · 19/11/2024 19:22

For a start, not everyone enjoys working from home? I know in my team there are some people in my team who enjoy working in the office for the social side and they hate working at home alone. They go in most days out of choice, others prefer to stay at home. Also confidence driving in the snow, plus location is key surely? Again, just because you don't feel comfortable driving in snow doesn't mean others don't. What an odd post.

WinterBones · 19/11/2024 19:22

why are people being so snarky?

surely if you don't have the option of working from home, the OP's post doesn't apply to you?

TTPDTS · 19/11/2024 19:22

I don't feel the need to look good and be present in the office! I actually work better when wfh - however some of the team don't so its a compromise.

If it's not a dangerous level of snow and ice then of course I'd go into work. However if it's national weather warnings + disaster scenario of not being able to get off the drive I wouldn't.

Then the OP should have phrased their question to reflect that.

HippeePrincess · 19/11/2024 19:24

I’ve been driving and working semi rurally for 19 years in the UK and not once have there been conditions that prevented me from driving to work. Where are you based that the driving conditions are risky?

DelicateSoundOfEchos · 19/11/2024 19:25

People are unnecessarily tetchy as its quite obvious OP was referring to people who can work from home.

OP I choose to work from home when it snows or there's snow forecast.

Lemonade2011 · 19/11/2024 19:25

Would I risk it? Risk what? I’m a nurse so I have no choice, I don’t think people realise that we go to work regardless same as carers, police, teachers fire etc etc just be happy you have a choice to work from home warm and safe, I leave home at 0600 so often roads aren’t gritted yet it’s dark going it’s dark coming home. No one is being snarky just seems than people who can work from home if they are able seem to think we all can, we travel to work whether there are warnings or not, during one very bad snowstorm my team couldn’t get home at all and did 24 hour shifts until the next shifts could come in take it turns to rest etc.

HermoinePotter · 19/11/2024 19:25

I used to drive. It ridiculous that some people are scared to drive in snow or ice and when the first few flakes fall are hyperventilating and demanding to work from home. Some of the replies on similar threads on here today have made my eyes roll to the back of my head. I live somewhere we regularly get snowed in and there’s not been a time we haven’t made it out if need be. Honestly a few inches of snow have people losing their minds on here.

Destiny123 · 19/11/2024 19:25

Cos drs can't wfh?

thecherryfox · 19/11/2024 19:26

Not everyone has the luxury of working from home. We risk our lives because we have no other choice. I remember driving my son to nursery before work a few years back and my car literally skidded off of the road because of the ice- luckily we were ok but it was terrifying. Believe me, if I had the choice to stay home, I would but I don’t

I was wondering this too.

It's still a ridiculous post and I can WFH. Pretty much all main roads are cleared so unless you live somewhere rural with no gritters then most people will be fine going to work even if they can WFH. Such a massive unnecessary fuss about snow in this country.

Agree, it's really pathetic!

SpunkyKoala · 19/11/2024 19:29

I’m lucky enough that my employer trusts me to make a judgment call on it. If I absolutely needed to be there I would make the attempt using main routes and bus routes as they are normally cleared first. If not I would wfh and change my schedule to accommodate an alternative office day or office location if one of the others were less affected

SpunkyKoala · 19/11/2024 19:30

I also have experience driving in very bad snow conditions which I think helps tremendously
