Just that, why would you risk it? Our company has recently changed wfh policy to 4 days in the office, however as I don't want to take the risk of driving iv been wfh past couple of days and wondered if/why people are going in? Do they feel the need to look good and be present in the office?

I’ve lived in Canada and we are so bad at snow in this country

TeenLifeMum · 19/11/2024 19:32

I wfh because my job can 100% be done from home.i go into work for team building but little else.

thicklysettled · 19/11/2024 19:32

I live not far from Chicago and a couple of inches of snow doesn't even count 😄 If I stayed home for it, I'd be laughed out of the office!

True, but in Canada they wfh these days when snow is bad.

The buildings in central Calgary are all connected with heated, enclosed bridges so you can get from office to shops without leaving the warm.

I think Op knows not everyone can work from home .

i can’t . My bus service is usually the first to stop working , i live at the top of a hill so often if people in my local town centre could drive I can’t .

i had to walk about 20 minutes last year and get someone at work to collect me last year ..my job isn’t walkable …

however if you can work from home and can then more safer than travelling why wouldn’t you ?

most the schools round here were closed today so I imagine a lot did a lot of wfh and juggling

What a snarky post! I work in healthcare so have no choice but to get in. The country would grind to a halt if everyone had your attitude.

But in the event of bad snow or ice, surely removing unnecessary journeys means less chaos for those that do have to go in and would also reduce accidents in the snow and ice and therefore reduce unnecessary burden on healthcare workers.

People who live rurally, or in the north of Scotland in my case the roads and weather can be very poor in winter(even main routes) , ❄️ visited in laws in Orkney one Christmas and were snowed in until after new year. Plenty places, and if you work unsociable hours the roads are often more treacherous due to not having been cleared or gritted yet, I don’t like it, the cold I can handle the snow I hate and yes those who can work from home should but roads tend to be quiet at 6am and 8/9pm anyway

xyz111 · 19/11/2024 19:36

Unless the snow is at least a foot, go into work for goodness sake

Summerbreeze456 · 19/11/2024 19:37

I usually drive, even if there's snow or ice. I don't have a job that can be done working from home. I also live in an area with heavy snowfall and my car is set up for it (I've got proper winter tyres and carry snow chains in the boot).

Stretchedresources · 19/11/2024 19:38

Our management tells staff to WFH when the roads are bad. No point in everyone driving in and increasing the pressure on the emergency services.

We'll increase your taxes then to take into account the extra accidents and hospital treatment 😁.

why are people being so snarky?

surely if you don't have the option of working from home, the OP's post doesn't apply to you?

Did you read the OP’s last sentence?

I live in the Highlands, very rurally, and even when the Beast from the East hit we got out. We had to, as three of our family are healthcare workers and needed to get into the hospital to relieve staff who were knackered. Rarely are our roads gritted so you just get on with life.

pinkpip100 · 19/11/2024 19:41

I'm not sure why everyone gets so snarky whenever WFH is mentioned. I think it's pretty obvious that OP is referring to those who have the option to WFH, otherwise obviously you go in it if at all possible.

I used to be in a job that couldn't be done from home, so would always go in, I've even walked through the snow when I couldn't get the car out. Went in through covid etc. Apart from feeling a bit envious every now and then, I had no issue with the people I knew (including DH) who could WFH - I chose to do my job and was really happy with that choice.

Now I am in a job that can be done from home, but do go into the office 1-2 days per week - Tuesday is usually one of those days. This morning my whole team decided to WFH because of the snow - we could have got in if we had to...but why would we do that when we can just as easily WFH? Driving in snow and ice isn't particularly nice, so I'm happy to avoid it when I have the option. Sounds like a sensible decision to me OP!

Zippedydodah · 19/11/2024 19:43

I’m two miles from the main road on narrow hilly lanes that never see a gritting lorry. If it’s ice and snow there’s no way I would have got to work unless I walked and as my office was a 39 mile round trip that wouldn’t have happened!

mitogoshigg · 19/11/2024 19:46

Because people are actually relying on my presence. Not everyone can work from home and not everyone who can actually dies the work they are paid to do!

Absolutely!!!

Lemonade2011 · 19/11/2024 19:47

@HermoinePotter not sure why you picked my post, as I have said the same yes you do, get on with it, we do it anyway on untreated roads in the dark it’s not overly fun though, The rural north of Scotland is the highlands….where I live. Where I am a nurse, where my colleagues have been snowed in. Nurses walked miles to get in and relieve people, could possibly have been during the beast. The neighbours dug our little street out so we could get to work ex is police so both still worked.

'Surely' a bit of ice and snow doesn't prevent people turning up for work.......

mitogoshigg · 19/11/2024 19:49

Ps in 32 years of driving, I've never experienced a British road that I couldn't drive my normal front wheel drive cars in. I've never lived north of the midlands but have and do live semi rurally

bluebalou · 19/11/2024 19:50

thecherryfox · 19/11/2024 19:26

Not everyone has the luxury of working from home. We risk our lives because we have no other choice. I remember driving my son to nursery before work a few years back and my car literally skidded off of the road because of the ice- luckily we were ok but it was terrifying. Believe me, if I had the choice to stay home, I would but I don’t

But you do have a choice , get a wfh job ... no one forces you into jobs that aren't flexible.
This post was aimed at people who can wfh..

ImJustAGirlInACountrySong · 19/11/2024 19:51

@bluebalou

So??

Other people are responding...it's allowed

JetskiSkyJumper · 19/11/2024 19:51

Most people are perfectly capable of driving in ice and snow.

The term snowflakes is springing to mind BlushGrin

ImthatBoleyngirl · 19/11/2024 19:52

Back when I used to work in the office, our manager would tell us to WFH if the weather conditions were dodgy.

bluebalou · 19/11/2024 19:53

Yes but being sarcastic , that probably wasn't the point of the post we already know not everyone can wfh.
