To ask if it’s uncommon for a baby to sleep 3 hours at a time?

My baby (usually) will do a 3 hour stretch of sleep on a night. I thought this is amazing, but heard someone else complaining about the same length time saying they were exhausted.

Is this about right for newborn sleep? How long did or does your newborn sleep for?

Not so unusual. How old? Mine tended to do a 3 or 4 hour stretch or 2 every 24 hours, but not usually at night :/

Depends how old they are, but I’d say 3 hours is pretty normal from quite a young age. Even birth.

11 days. We’ve been in this pattern since maybe day 2. I expected to feel a lot more tired!

Ironically given that my son was super colicky as a newborn, this was only during the daytime, and at night time he’d usually sleep through! I remember trying to give him dreamfeeds for a few weeks, but it didn’t last long, once the first sleep regression comes he only slept for a few hours at a time, for months and months. Sent me wappy.

That’s reassuring thank you. I just thought it would be more tiring, but I’m not particularly tired? Maybe it’s because I woke up every hour in late pregnancy.

Quite normal but the variation is huge! I would have loved a couple of three hour stretches at night with my first who never slept but my second usually woke only once in 10 hours and sometimes slept through!

That's normal for a newborn, some babies are worse than that.

That said, you have no idea why someone else is exhausted. Even if their baby does 3 hour stretches, that's not enough sleep for an adult and that family may have other things going on.

I had a horrific pregnancy and a terrible c section experience. My baby was doing several 2-3 hour stretches a night but that was nowhere near enough for me to recover.

Edited to also say you're only 11 days in. The sleep deprivation goes on for a lot lot longer than that and it catches up with you.

Congratulations on your baby, OP!

It sounds as if you’ve lucked out on their sleeping pattern. I did with my DD-I think it was partly because she was nearly 10lbs so could fill up on a lot of milk. She slept 3-4 hours from the start, in fact I sometimes had to wake her up for a feed!

So I had a very rosy idea of newborn’s sleeping patterns…until I had DS, who was very different. 😂

Babies are different. DC1 was a sleeper, but hard to settle. DC2 was not a sleeper, but always settled quickly.

BackinBlack24 · 19/11/2024 14:08

Mine woke every 2 hours I would have been delighted with 3 hours . Some baby's sleep longer some sleep less.

Jayne35 · 19/11/2024 14:16

I don't think there is a 'usual' sleep pattern for babies, all very different. My daughter hardly slept more than 2 hours at a time for what seemed like forever yet my son slept all night from day 1, the midwives in the hospital made me wake him for feeds!

SJM1988 · 19/11/2024 14:19

DS every hour and half until about 2-3 months. Then slowly increased but still a very up and do baby until a year.
DD probably was doing 2-3 hour stretches around the month mark. then 4-5 hour night time stretches from about 3-4 months

Lifeglowup · 19/11/2024 14:20

Mine didn’t sleep that long! 3 hours stretches didn’t start until 4 months for mine.

Caffeineneedednow · 19/11/2024 14:20

God I would have killed for 3 hour stints when mine were that age. They vary massively and if you are feeling good and functioning well then just be happy. What you described is perfectly I the normal range.

Enjoy all those tiny baba cuddles

Plastictrees · 19/11/2024 14:21

I think that’s fine, mine was the same and woke for feeds every 3 hours. Once he started gaining weight though he was sleeping through the night by 8 weeks! I was expecting things to be absolute hell sleep wise but he was a brilliant sleeper and we are very thankful!
