to ask you to order from your takeaway directly not via Deliveroo/Uber Eats if possible?

I was having a chat with my local takeaway owner last week and he said he gets a lot of orders from Deliveroo/Uber Eats and the fees are crippling and he is now selling his business.

Deliveroo and Uber Eats take 30% + vat commission which he just can't sustain. This is also contributing to the high prices and low quality.

I am lucky that all my favourite take aways are walking distance so always order direct and collect.

If you want to save your local takeaway please go direct where you can

I gave up ordering takeaways altogether because my local ones seem to require me to sign up to ridiculously complicated apps when it used to be easy just to phone them.

WiddlinDiddlin · 19/11/2024 19:24

The takeaways in my area would fit into those statistics of 'majority of services being provided by xyz'... it's just they are their own drivers. It doesn't matter if you order via JustEat or by ringing the shop or via the shops website... your food will still be brought to you by the same person.

My sister delivers takeaways for 3 places in our area and has worked delivering takeaways in four different areas (urban and more rural/suburban), tis pretty much the same everywhere once you get out of the very centre of big cities.

I find this fascinating. Pre Deliveroo, did your office provide a daily food allowance? or was it that you got food in the office, catered, and now you're working from home so that isn't an option?

In whcih case, there must be a bunch of takeaway places that are suddenly getting business which they would not have got before. This is the type of thing where a deliveroo works in the takeaway's favour surely?

As for small meal pricing - around here, that's pretty standard, deliveroo or not. A basic curry, without rice or bread, is around £10-12. So you're easily looking at £15 per head, before you factor in any additional costs.

I'm not sure how it worked before as it is a new role for me. I do know we spend £4500 pm on Deliveroo for staff meals (we are a small office of around 50 people). I'm not complaining, its saving me a bunch on lunches

Does anyone think the £7 off £20 in November deal is worth it? Or is it still rubbish cause of the mark ups?

VegTrug · 20/11/2024 11:36

hairyunicorn · 19/11/2024 16:33

My work give us £12 per day (you are in the office) to spend on Deliveroo.
So i have no choice but to use them and all the takeaways have put their prices up, A small meal costs between £12 - £14

Can you save it up and use it for something decent each Friday for example?

Unfortunately not, the £12 has to be used daily, between 10:00 - 15:00. But many a day i'm so full up from lunch that i don't need dinner :)

This thread was on my mind today. I went to my local independent takeaway earlier, rather than getting it delivered by UE. A veg meal plus rice - £9.50 in person, £14.95 on UE; meat meal plus rice - £10.50 in person, £15.95 on UE. And then the UE service charge, and delivery.

I did the sensible thing and bought twice the usual amount since I was in there Grin. It’s amazing Sri Lankan food and it keeps / reheats well.

FindingNeverland28 · 20/11/2024 18:34

I avoid using Deliveroo etc for this reason but also because of the compulsory service charge they now add.

Zanatdy · 20/11/2024 18:57

Cheaper too as they add the price on when ordering ubereats. Thankfully i’m not much of a takeaway fan, well I like them but can’t afford to eat them all the while, money wise and calorie wise.

I always do this! It’s often a lot quicker. Cheaper too!

Thepurplepig · 20/11/2024 20:48

I refuse to line the pockets of a multi national when I have very good food on my door step.

If I want Chinese food I drive two villages across to get the best Chinese food you can buy. I’ll have a drink at the bar while I wait. They’re packed and they don’t do Deliveroo/uber. The same for Indian. I get my fish and chips from the local van that drives the villages.

Is it all more effort. Yes but it’s far nicer than the shit I got the one and only time I ordered Uber eats.

Toptops · 20/11/2024 22:02

ChocolateSpider · 19/11/2024 12:05

No sorry I like being able to track when it’s coming and like how quick it is. Before Uber eats I could easily wait 2 hours for a takeaway and I’m in London 😂 now my local Chinese delivers within 10 mins (yes it was actually 10 minutes)

Freshly cooked then?

ShabbaRankz · 20/11/2024 22:19

ordering via third parties never crosses my mind tbh. I either get delivered directly or pick it up

Some of the comments in here absolutely smack of “why is the high street boarded up and there’s no shops anymore” vibes accompanied by “I just want to press a button on an app”

absolutely agree

canyouseemyhousefromhere · 21/11/2024 07:48

I always order direct from my Indian restaurant but they only take cash on delivery so occasionally I have used just eat but the delivery & service charges are annoying (I always give a tip with direct orders).

DH always orders direct with fish & chip shop who have always put right any problems straight away.

Worst experience was a McDonald's delivery via Uber eats where a large amount was missing. When I called them they refused to refund/re-deliver. Spent ages on the phone but got nowhere & McDonalds wouldn't help because it was uber delivery.

TessTimoney · 21/11/2024 09:54

I organise a monthly fish supper evening for Senior Citizens. I have always ordered via the local chippy's own app. However, last month the value of my order £90, exceeded the permitted limit so I telephoned the shop and was advised to use the Just Eat app!!

Order direct from the takeaway.

I think people often overlook how essential delivery apps are to disabled peoples independence.

I'm a deaf wheelchair user who can't self propel more than 50 meters and I live alone so I have to get everything delivered or starve. I don't have an adapted kitchen so I can't cook. Ever since my late OH died I'd had to get food delivered most days otherwise I can't eat.

I can't just phone up directly, or go and collect it. I tried using the direct online systems a couple of times but my order was wrong and I had no way of getting a refund as I kept being told to phone up. Delivery apps have much more accessible customer service.

Do you want to be able to cook yourself? and what adaptations would you need in order to do so in your current home? Do you want help/ support to get this done? Depending on where you are, there may be a 'centre for independent living' or similar who could put pressure on your landlord/ help you access funding/ council support etc...

Angrywife · 22/11/2024 10:42

They've two options for me.

  1. Create their own app for me to order through.
  2. Charge more through just eat/uber.

I'm not going to order over the phone, anxiety prevents it. I never make phone calls, but I would pay more for the privilege of ordering on line (and already do with the service charge)

angela1952 · 22/11/2024 11:55

I don't have food delivered but think it is up to customers how they get their takeaway meals. If suppliers don't like the delivery companies they should not use them. Some in this area make their own local deliveries.

Sethera · 22/11/2024 12:22

I don't trust any of the apps. If we want a takeaway, I order by phone and collect it myself. Often get extras thrown in that way, e.g. prawn crackers with Chinese.

lolit · 22/11/2024 12:23

The thing is when I ordered on an app and got an incorrect order or the order never came, I got a refund on the app in 2 seconds. If that happens when you order directly, you can forget about a refund!

Miri13 · 22/11/2024 12:26

I’ve never used them and have no intention of using them. I think they are exploitative. If buying a takeaway I either collect or contact the restaurant direct for delivery.

Kedece · 22/11/2024 12:33

Our local takeaway only takes cash on delivery. If they start accepting card payments I'd use them rather than Just Eat

Negangirlxx · 22/11/2024 12:44

Amuseaboosh · 19/11/2024 12:25

Refunds are always an issue.

Late deliveries are never accounted for.

Often, no one answers the phone if you call a takeaway to place an order.

Deliveries are hardly ever timely, and there is no order tracking.

Uber Eats & Deliveroo have all of the above. Takeaways are supposed to be a treat. Ordering them directly is not easy.

It's sad for the businesses affected. But people generally go for convenience and reliability.

I completely agree.
If you ring and ask where your order is, you usually get “they’ve just left with your order”, but they never materialise, which leads to another call chasing them, and you once again get the “they’re on their way to you”.

Much easier to track through apps, and much easier to get your money back if the food is cold, or if stuff is missing.
