to ask you to order from your takeaway directly not via Deliveroo/Uber Eats if possible?

I was having a chat with my local takeaway owner last week and he said he gets a lot of orders from Deliveroo/Uber Eats and the fees are crippling and he is now selling his business.

Deliveroo and Uber Eats take 30% + vat commission which he just can't sustain. This is also contributing to the high prices and low quality.

I am lucky that all my favourite take aways are walking distance so always order direct and collect.

If you want to save your local takeaway please go direct where you can

I have this debate with my DH all the time. I use Deliveroo whilst he goes direct after speaking to our local upmarket Chinese restaurant who told him that Deliveroo changes around 50%.

Takeaways and restaurants don’t have to be on the Deliveroo platform, but if they want that extreme exposure they have to pay for it. And that’s fair enough I think. Deliveroo isn’t making a fortune. It only turned a profit for the first time this year and a very modest one at that. The cost of developing, managing and maintaining their platform is enormous.

I think people often overlook how essential delivery apps are to disabled peoples independence.

I'm a deaf wheelchair user who can't self propel more than 50 meters and I live alone so I have to get everything delivered or starve. I don't have an adapted kitchen so I can't cook. Ever since my late OH died I'd had to get food delivered most days otherwise I can't eat.

I can't just phone up directly, or go and collect it. I tried using the direct online systems a couple of times but my order was wrong and I had no way of getting a refund as I kept being told to phone up. Delivery apps have much more accessible customer service.

Some of the comments in here absolutely smack of “why is the high street boarded up and there’s no shops anymore” vibes accompanied by “I just want to press a button on an app”

I’m not sure anyone lamenting the high street is wishing there were more pizza or kebab shops open…

We don't use Deliveroo etc ever. Live too rural to be of interest. We go to the shop/restaurant and pick it up ourselves. Far prefer the personal service.

Us too. They don't offer delivery by any means where I live plus no one would come out to us. Only Dominoes or the chippy deliver. Picking it up is fine when it's your only option. No good unless you drive. I'm glad anyway as its effort to get takeaway which is better as I'd eat more if it was easy and cheap. It's neither for us. An occasional treat. If I had it delivered I'd be more tempted and much fatter

potatocakesinprogress · 19/11/2024 13:04

Everywhere adds the extra cost on to the items when ordered via Deliveroo, why is he not doing that

Wellingtonspie · 19/11/2024 13:05

mossylog · 19/11/2024 12:59

Total side point, and not singling anyone out here, but I also never understood why anyone would get McDonalds or Burger King delivered— the main selling point of burger and chips is that it's pretty cheap and it's hot, so getting it lukewarm and congealed and a third extra cost seems like it defeats the purpose.

For us the closest Burger King is town centre so you’d had to pay to park up then walk. Where as the uber chap rides his moped right though the Ballard upto the shop. His faster getting it and bringing it to us than dh fetching it.

TimeForTeaAndG · 19/11/2024 12:48

So how is it hot when it's delivered? Get an insulated bag. My DH has been known to use our heated seat function when collecting but I appreciate not everyone has that option 😆

No thanks, I'd rather use Deliveroo and pay a bit more than do an 8 mile round trip.

reesewithoutaspoon · 19/11/2024 13:08

I don't understand why he isn't bumping his deliveroo prices. Our local takeaway just-eat prices are significantly higher than if you go in person.

ManchesterLu · 19/11/2024 13:08

A lot of the time they will up their prices on the apps because of the fees (which is fair enough) so you'll even find that it's cheaper to buy in the restaurant anyway. A lot of people just pay for convenience, the same reason people use Amazon etc.

TimeForATerf · 19/11/2024 13:09

Always collect, without fail. Waiting for a delivery invariably means it’s not piping hot and has to be warmed up.

Eraserbread · 19/11/2024 13:09

The only reason I use Uber Eats is because I rarely have any cash on me/in the house, and if you use the takeaways;' own delivery services, then you need it! Solve that problem and I wouldn't bother.

AnonymousBleep · 19/11/2024 13:10

Didn't know this! Useful info.

I use the same curry house and pizza place and order directly from them, but if we fancy something else a bit different, tend to go through Just Eat or Deliveroo. Will have a rethink!

Tangerinenets · 19/11/2024 13:11

Always order directly and only order from places where I can. Had some awful experiences with Uber eats. A nightmare to get a refund. I had a huge row with them after the Uber driver picked up a random restaurant order and delivered it to us from McDonalds. As it was an order meant for someone ordering actually in the restaurant I didn’t have the correct 5 digit code to quote. I was told several times it was against their terms and conditions to give a refund. When I asked him what those terms and conditions actually said he said that he wasn’t authorised to tell me 🙄. £15 down the drain which in ever did get back and all we had to show for it was two orange juices.

RoseyLentil · 19/11/2024 13:11

Never used the apps as our local Chinese doesn't have it. We live rural so just ring up and collect ourselves. Our Chinese is now 2nd generation and well used.

CarrotPencil · 19/11/2024 13:11

For us it’s either delivery or cook, so they’d lose out on our business entirely without Deliveroo. We get plenty of takeaways delivered by the restaurant themselves, using the Deliveroo app.

Plus I hate the phrase ‘can I ask you to’ 😅so holy!

Bjorkdidit · 19/11/2024 13:12

Will probably get some hate for this, but in 2024 I resent paying cash in hand to takeaways who are only putting one in three orders through the till to fiddle the tax man

But you're happy to facilitate Deliveroo fiddling the tax man and exploiting their workers by denying them employment rights by designating them as 'self employed'? OK then.

Do businesses not have the choice to opt out of using Deliveroo etc?

Yes but so many people only look at Deliveroo and JustEat.

NoTouch · 19/11/2024 13:14

It is for the business to manage that and encourage customers to order the way they want them too. They do not need to sign up for these delivery services, and they will get more business (and usually you find the quality deteriorates as a result of the volume!)

Our local indian takeaway offers discounts for those who buy from their own website rather than via just eats etc, they include a menu in the bag with details of the discount on it.

I’m not sure anyone lamenting the high street is wishing there were more pizza or kebab shops open…

Absolutely. One of my pet peeves is people whinging about high streets dying, but not being able to udnerstand that people and society moves on and everyone has to adapt. the village up the road from us has an absolutely THRIVING high street with more independent stores and restaurants than chains Why? It's a bunch of things i think. 1. It's easy to walk the entire high street safely 2. there's plenty of parking - in paid for car parks or free for an hour on the street. 3. The street itself is wide enough that even with people parking, there's plenty of space. 4. Similarly, the pavements are wide enough for people to walk in groups, with children, past restaurants that have spilled outside etc. 5. it's attractive - no badly designed areas with restaurant bins spilling over on the street for example (like in our village), or badly maintained pavements. Plus proactive things to make it attractive like hanging baskets etc. 6. the independent shops are not taking the piss on pricing. There's a fancy butcher, for example, who absolutely does sell the super posh expensive beef joints... but you can also pick up a pack of lamb chops for a tenner or a whole, grass fed chicken for about £9.

it's the same with deliveroo. I absolutely try to order directly when I can. But as others have pointed out, it's often difficult, more expensive or less convenient. One local place is MORE expensive if you order directly, which I find annoying. There's often no recourse when things go wrong either - my food took 2 hours to arrive once and the restaurant manager/owner was completely and totally unsympathetic. I no longer order from him, but choose a further away restaurant on deliveroo.

Businesses have other adapt to changing market conditions and the changing preferences of their customer base. The reality is that Deliveroo gives them a far wider potential customer base, with far fewer limitations by distance and the opportunity to leverage this. They need to be taking advantage of that.

mondaytosunday · 19/11/2024 13:15

My thinking is they're takeaway business has probably increased hugely! But it's may not work for every restaurant to be sure.
In fact I'm trying to think of one restaurant that will deliver without using one of the big services. And if they used their own staff presumably they'd have to pay them a wage too.

Fizbosshoes · 19/11/2024 13:16

We only have about 4 takeaways a year so not really helping but always go direct to the restaurant. The local pizza restaurant you can order online and it was ready pretty quickly, the Indian takeaway we call and collect, it usually takes about 45-50 minutes, which is fine.

KookyGreenHelper · 19/11/2024 13:17

I order on just eat. I would order direct if i did not have to spend ages yelling on the phone for all the neighbours to hear. When i did order direct it would always take over an hour to come. I once ordered a chinese direct and my chips were missing. I had to phone up again and the chips took another hour to come. By this time the rest of the food was cold.

housethatbuiltme · 19/11/2024 13:18

Never used either.

I have occasionally used Just Eat for delivery during times I can't go out and get it myself etc... if the place doesn't have its own online order form but its rare.

The local McDonalds is a NIGHTMARE of deliveroo people. I think most Mcdonalds are now and the constant complaint on facebook of people saying the order was wrong, cold/took to long, bits missing, never arrived, ruined their life (always their kids birthday somehow) etc... screaming and demanding refunds from Mcdonalds and saying they will boycott it or go to the papers etc...

They have now had to put on security guards because people go in and threaten and abuse the staff (couldn't go to order your own food but can magically go to assault someone). Its just become a depressing and scary place which suck as it took years of campaigning to get one up here.

Mcdonald's is not a delivery company.

Hang on, if there is a bollard there, why is he riding a moped through it?

Surely a bollard means pedestrians only?

BigDahliaFan · 19/11/2024 13:21

Check the prices, we don't have deliveroo where we live, so when friends we were visiting were suggesting we 'deliveroo-ed' something from one of their favourite restaurants.

we couldn't work it out and so just ordered a takeaway directly from the restaurant. They were stunned at how much cheaper it was and haven't used Deliveroo since.
